Calcutta Rescue is a pioneering Indian-registered charity working to improve the lives of the poorest people in and around Kolkata.The NGO was set up by Dr. Jack Preger a British Doctor in the year 1979, the pioneer of street medicine, who devoted his life to assisting people living in dire poverty in the city’s slums.He wanted to meet the most basic needs of the poorest of the poor, with free medical care, education and vocational training.Calcutta Rescue Handicrafts is accredited with FAIR TRADE FORUM INDIA (FTFI). Calcutta Rescue received the Guidestar Platinum Award in 2017: the highest level of recognition for transparency and public accountability along with other prestigious honors. In August 2018 we got the ‘A school that cares’ award from The Telegraph Education Foundation, and our founder Dr Jack was inducted into the foundation’s Hall of Fame for his services to education in Kolkata.Some of the charity’s patients and ex-schoolchildren find it impossible to earn a living. This may be because they are disabled, are illiterate or lack the necessary skills or confidence.

Calcutta Rescue’s fairtrade handicraft project was established to provide employment for these people, giving them the money they need to support themselves and their families and the dignity that comes with work.Designers from Europe come to Kolkata to work with the team, training them in new skills and developing new products that are on trend.The team, now more than 50 strong artisans, produce beautiful clothes and gift items, made with creativity and care and finished to exacting standards. A single embroidered card, for instance, takes three hours to produce.Calcutta Rescue’s handicrafts are available at outlets in Kolkata and in abroad, and can also be purchased directly from the project in Kolkata.
