Doctor guilty of gross sexualimposition released from jail

Jake Heiney,with attor-ney ShannonSmith inLucas Coun-ty CommonPleas Court,was convic-ted on char-ges of grosssexual impo-sition andtamperingwith records.

With an appeal of his grosssexual imposition convictionpending before Ohio's 6thDistrict Court of Appeals, aformer Lambertville orthope-dist was released from jail thisweek.

Jake Heiney, 41, had beenserving a 180-day sentence atthe Corrections Center ofNorthwest Ohio near Stryker,but was released Wednesdayafter the appeals court grantedhis motion to put the sentence

on hold pending appeal. Thecourt ordered Heiney be re-leased on a monitored recog-nizance bond, have no contactwith the victims in the case,and surrender his passport.

Heiney was convicted Feb.24 by a jury in Lucas CountyCommon Pleas Court on twocounts of gross sexual imposi-tion and one count of tamper-ing with records for improp-erly touching two female pa-tients at his Sylvania office,and altering one of their medi-

cal records after learning ofthe investigation.

Judge Gene Zmuda sen-tenced Heiney to 180 days atCCNO followed by 90 days inwork release for the misde-meanor tampering conviction.For the felonies, he placedhim on community control forfour years, imposed a $5,000fine, and ordered him to per-form 200 hours of communityservice, complete a sex of-fender treatment program,and register with the sheriff as

a sex offender annually for 15years.

Separately, both victimshave filed lawsuits againstHeiney in Lucas County Com-mon Pleas Court seekingdamages in excess of $25,000.

In Monroe County Circuit

Court, Heiney faces similarcharges involving two patientsfrom his Lambertville office.That trial is scheduled forApril 18. He has voluntarilysurrendered his medical li-cense.

2 men, 1 armed,rob Findlay store

FINDLAY — Two maskedmen, one of whom had ahandgun, robbed a Circle K ofcigarettes and an undeter-mined amount of money earlyFriday, authorities said.

The men, wearing all black,entered the store at 464 E. San-dusky St. about 4:55 a.m. andconfronted the attendant,Findlay police said. One bran-dished a handgun and de-manded cigarettes and moneyfrom the cash register.

They then fled on foot andwere last seen running north-west, police said.

Fire destroysduplex; arsonlisted as cause

An apparent act of arsondestroyed a vacant duplexlate Thursday.

Fire Lt . MatthewHertzfeld said the blaze at1647 N. Ontario St. betweenStickney Avenue and Buf-falo Street was intentionallyset. Fire crews arrivedabout 10:05 p.m., and about15 minutes later, the battal-ion chief called for crews toget out and fight the blazefrom outside.

Firefighters brought theblaze under control inabout an hour, by whichtime the duplex was a totalloss, Lieutenant Hertzfeldsaid. The damage was esti-mated at $227,000.

Country records list Lu-cas County Land Reutiliza-tion Corp. as owner of theduplex. It was built in 1907.
