Program NotesLatin Smiles is suitable for first or second year bands. It is very rhythmic. The beat should feel like a combination of cha-cha and easy rock. Using more or fewer percussion instruments is completely at the discretion of the director, who must decide what will balance with the rest of the band.
First-year bands can use Latin Smiles to gain experience playing a few accidentals. The countermelody at m. 15, for example, will provide the horn player with a good exercise for learning written E≤ and EΩ. Copious reminders are included in all parts to help young play-ers.
The bass-drum player will have an opportunity to stand alone several times, the first being in m. 2. Experiment with the right amount of dampening to get a solid sound.
Between mm. 23 and 38, the second theme is fragmented between various sections in an echoing style. Note that the echoing is not scored the same in the second eight measures. Strive for dynamic balance and tonal contrast as sections alternate.

About the Composer
Joseph Compello, a native of Carbondale, Pennsylvania, holds degrees in music edu-cation from the Peabody Conservatory and Towson University. During his thirty-one year career as an instrumental music teacher in Maryland, he wrote numerous compositions for his students. In 1994, Carl Fischer began publishing many of these classroom-tested pieces including his debut publication Cadets on Parade, and the 1996 best-seller Rock to the Max, Mr. Sax. In 2003, Compello’s journey from local band director to internationally published composer was chronicled in the prestigious Baltimore Sun. Now retired from teaching, Compello, continues to draw on his extensive background in music education to compose new music exclusively for Carl Fischer’s Performance Series, which now contains over eighty-five of his works.
