Introduction Not all website visitors are equal. There are times the best place to send your web traffic is to a direct, hard-‐hitting, long form sales letter. Other times, that would be the worst place to send your web visitors.
Here are some general criteria to consider when sending traffic to a fan page instead of any other location:
1. Facebook to Facebook – Let’s say you’re dating and you meet someone attractive at a social function who you’d like to get to know better. Would it be easier to get them to go to another location entirely or just somewhere else in the current location? With cold traffic who you have no relationship with, it’s easier to move them from somewhere else in Facebook to your fan page. They’re more likely to go there than anywhere else you might ask them to go.
2. Viral Potential – If your plan is to predominately have web visitors refer other web visitors, Facebook is the best place to make this happen – as the viral components built into Facebook are unmatched anywhere else. Plus users are used to sharing stuff on Facebook anyway.
3. Broad Appeal – In most cases, it would be hard to make money trying to target a niche like Boston Red Sox fans. However, broad appeals like this can be monetized on Facebook with the right approach. If I wanted to go to very broad markets, I’d do so with a fan page before any other web property.
4. Facebook specific – There are some methods of traffic that are only possible within Facebook (Facebook apps, groups, etc.) so therefore you have to send traffic from them to within Facebook first before you go anywhere else.
One final thing before we dive in. Our end goal here is not traffic. It’s not likes. It’s not fans. It’s PROFIT! Don’t be wooed by those who say they have 100,000+ fans but never tell you how much money that’s producing as a result.
The chief aim of this guide is much more than just traffic – it’s about getting the most specific types of web visitors who are most likely to perform some sort of action that results in YOU being compensated.
Let’s dive in.

Comment & Win Let me walk you through a case scenario of how we used this first and then we’ll give you some suggestions of how you can utilize it.
We did this for a webinar that Dan Hollings was doing for Step By Step Mobile. This is a rather high ticket course, going for $997, and even more for the multi-‐pay option. We were selling this course via webinars that we were doing either to our own lists or through affiliates.
What we’d do is this. At the beginning of the webinar we’d let the audience know that if they “put their webinar notes” on Facebook, each note submission would give them an entry into a contest. The winner would win the course for free.
The way we would track this is with the Facebook “Comments” social plugin that we’d put on the web page for that specific offer (you can see one example at http://stepbystepmobile.com). At the end of the webinar we’d randomly select a comment and that person would win J
The result is that in some webinars we generated over one thousand comments, over 600 Likes and a LOT of viral traffic. The Likes alone get traffic because when the person likes our Step by Step Mobile offer page that puts it in their data feed. When their friends visit their Facebook profile, they will see the page that was liked, and they’ll click on that link. It will look something like this on any person’s wall who liked it:
Now I don’t have exact specifics on how much money this made, but I know of at least two customers who purchased off of Facebook from this contest that otherwise would not have purchased. So that’s $2,000 for something relatively simple that only took a few minutes to set up.
The concept is simple – you incentivize people to post comments. After a certain time period, you randomly pick a winner and give them a gift.
How can you use this? Let’s break down several different ways… Check out this page here: http://fbadvocate.com/examples/webvideo.php

Now let me explain the key components of it. First, you’d want a compelling headline to draw your audience into this web page. Then, you’d want a description of what they should do while watching the video to get them to create as many Facebook comments as possible.
Then finally you embed a Facebook comments plugin right on the page.
Now here’s where it gets interesting – the comments and/or where the likes go doesn’t have to be the same page as where the comments box is placed. In order for you to understand this, let’s walk through how you put a Facebook comments box on any page.
Create A Facebook App If you don’t already have any apps then read this tutorial: https://developers.Facebook.com/docs/opengraph/tutorial/
You can set up an app in a few minutes. You don’t even need the app to do anything; you just need it for the app id.
Once you have an app id, you can easily put the social comments plugin on any web page by going here:
http://developers.Facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/comments/
Once there you’ll see a box similar to this:
You can replace http://example.com with your Facebook fan page URL. You can modify the number of posts as well as the width of the box and color scheme.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
5 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
When you have something you like, click “Get Code”, and this screen will pop up:
Then you just edit the page where you’re putting your web video and insert this comments box code in the appropriate places. In the case of the code above notice this:
<div class="fb-‐comments" data-‐href="http://www.Facebook.com/wpfanpro" data-‐num-‐posts="2" data-‐width="470"></div>
I highlighted the most interesting part in yellow.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
6 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
In this case each time someone comments on the page, guess what shows up on their wall? This:
Do you realize the insane amount of advertising you’re getting from this? While people are commenting on something on a web page, their comments are pulling in the details along with a direct link to whatever Facebook page you choose!
If you want to take it a step further, you can also add the like button to that page as well:
http://developers.Facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like/
This is pretty much the same procedure as a comments box. You could theoretically have them “like” ONE fan page, but their comments could be attributed to a DIFFERENT fan page J
Other applications for using this technique? Well think about this: most blogs use regular blog comments. What if you got rid of the blog comments and instead only allowed Facebook comments? Then you could choose what URL those comments would be attributed to, thus determining what would show up on their wall.
Do you think this is a much better use for blog comments than just your standard WordPress commenting system? You bet!
ESPECIALLY if you give some sort of bribe to people who comment – it could be a free report, or again a contest where you just pick one winner and send them something.
We’ve honestly just scratched the surface of the power of using this comments box in conjunction with getting people to write their “notes” or whatever. Think of all the different ways you could use this in your business now that you realize the “secret” behind it.
Let me give you another example with a one-‐two punch J

Tagging & Mentioning I get these all the time in my email inbox:
I get these from more than just my profile. I also get them if someone mentions any of my Facebook fan pages that I’m an administrator on.
Also, besides these emails they also show up on Facebook in interesting places. Like when someone mentions me on Facebook, it shows up in my data feed. Here’s an example:
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
8 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Here’s another example, that gets REALLY INTERESTING:
This is for a photo I was tagged in. Not only do photos show up on your data feed, but they also show up in two other places.
The first place they show up is on the photo roll that displays your latest photos (until more recent photos eventually bump it off), depending on the Facebook profile/fan page settings.
It also shows up under your photos tab:

Notice that it says Photos and VIDEOS. Very few people do this with videos, although it’s relatively simple to do so.

You could easily make slide show videos of certain people, upload it and tag them; then also post it on their wall and/or their fan pages.
Why would you want to mention key people, tag photos of them, and/or tag videos of them?
The first reason: it shows up on their profile, wall and in other places depending on what you use. The idea is that the more of a following someone has, the more potential exposure you can get.
Now Facebook profiles are ONE place to do this with – but the problem with profiles is that a person can only have so many friends – there is a limit of 5000 friends, at least at the time I write this.
However, what’s the limit on Facebook fan pages for fans? At the moment, there is none.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
11 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
So here is ONE way you can do it:
In this case I posted an 11 second(!) video screenshot with no voice over – just highlighting ONE thing about Ryan Lee. Then I posted it on his fan page where there is a LOT of activity going on. Also, I tagged him as well so not only will it show up on his fan page, but also on his regular profile.

BUT – I made one fatal mistake – I posted as my profile instead of my fan page.
Here’s how you can post as your fan page instead.
Currently if I’m logged into Facebook this is what the top bar would look like:
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
13 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Now here is how I switch over to post on people’s walls as a fan page instead of as myself:
Just by clicking on that little down arrow, it opens up a “Use Facebook as” menu, and then I can select to use Facebook as a fan page. Let’s pick one… I decided to pick the WP Twin fan page…
Now what happens if I post somewhere?
And now if someone clicks on the name it doesn’t go to my home profile but it goes to my fan page instead!

Groups Groups are a great place to get traffic for anything.
You can create a group at www.Facebook.com/groups/ and it takes less than a minute to set one up. Now before I go into tactics let me share with you a bit about how Facebook groups work.
If you create your own group, you’ll be an admin. When you create a group, you have to initially add at least one Facebook friend to it as a member. So click on “Create New Group”, and then type in a few letters of a friend’s name. Options will appear with the names of people you can add to the group.
When you select a friend, and then click the “Create” button, those friends will automatically be added to the group. They don’t need to confirm or anything, they’ll just immediately be dumped in the group. Powerful, isn’t it?
To access any group that you are either an admin or a member of, just log into Facebook. Then click “Home” on the upper left menu to see a list of groups.

15 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Once you set up your own group, you’re going to want to tweak the group’s settings. You can do so by clicking on the settings arrow on your group page… Then click on “Edit Group”
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
16 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
You will get a page that looks something like this:
Profile Picture – you can change this by clicking on the current default profile picture icon at the top of your group. You really can’t do much with this profile picture because you’re limited in size. I recommend you go to http://iconfinder.com and do a search for an icon, making sure to filter the results for “Allowed for Commercial Use (no link required)” and just pick something and use THAT.
Group Name – you can edit your group name and change it here. We’ll talk about group naming strategies in a bit.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
17 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Privacy – in general I select “Closed” – this is more likely to get people to join your group because otherwise they can’t access any of the content or posts. However, there ARE exceptions to this rule depending on the group you’re creating.
Membership Approval – I recommend you turn off approval unless you have a specific purpose for doing so.
Email Address – If you click on “Set Up Group Email” you’ll see this:
Notice the highlight I added to this J
Now there is a limit on this function – after you get so many members you will no longer be able to email all group members. Last I knew it was 5,000 but I’m not sure if Facebook has changed this. They currently don’t reveal this information anywhere that I could find.
But it’s a significant number of users that you can send group email to before you get too many members and this function goes away. So use it while you can!
Description – Facebook is one of the largest search engines in the world. The cool thing about groups is that once you create a group, it immediately gets indexed in Facebook’s search engine! Groups however, very rarely get indexed in the search engines outside of Facebook, so there is no point in trying for keyword optimization here. Just write for HUMAN optimization.
Posting Permissions: This you’ll want to select these on a group by group basis depending on the model you’re using (which we’ll discuss shortly).
Group Strategy Remember earlier when I said you can automatically add friends to groups without needing any confirmation on their part? Well, guess what? Your friends can also invite their friends as well and those friends will automatically be added, too.
On the right side of any group you’re an admin or member of you’ll see something like this:
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
18 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
It is a wise move when you are first jumpstarting a group to teach those joining your group how to refer others and also to encourage them to do so!
Notifications In the upper right-‐hand corner of your group page you’ll notice a tab that says “Notifications”. Click on it and go to Settings.
Once you open up the settings this is what you’ll see:
This is where it gets crazy. Any member you add to your group will, by default, get an email notification every time a post is made in that group. The only exception is if they have already set their notification settings to turn off all groups – which very few Facebook users set.
Do you see the power in this? Most people who join your group will get an email notification every time you POST something to that group! This is how you can get traffic like crazy to any URL. All you really do is create posts that recommend sites that you’ve monetized in one form or another.

19 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Snowballing The NUMBER 1 factor for your success with Facebook groups in tapping into the “automatic adding” of group members is something I call snowballing.
The idea is to create groups around newsy topics before anyone else does, and/or around controversial topics.
The idea is that stuff like “golf” already has a ton of groups so it’s harder to any real traction. But something like “Tiger Wood Should Be Banned from PGA” as a group right when Tiger Woods had all those troubles, could’ve been hot.
Now how would you make money with this? Well one obvious way is to bounce them to a page that has CPA (cost per action) offers that you can find from networks like http://cj.com or http://www.epicdirectnetwork.com/
For example, there was a CPA offer running last year where you got $1.20 per email optin for giving away a $100 McDonald’s gift card.
You can see how a mass appeal offer like this that pays you just for getting someone to submit their email address could work for Facebook groups.
One thing I would like to mention is that CPA offers are VERY aggressive – you may or may not want to promote them based on your own comfort zone because of all the marketing these companies are going
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
20 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
to do on the backend to the people who sign up. I personally stay away from CPA offers, but that’s a personal choice – I will not deny their power though!
Ad Space Another way to monetize a big Facebook group is to sell ad space on the group itself. What I mean by this is you advertise somewhere like the Warrior Forum Special Offer Section or on Digital Point where you will promote someone to your group for a fee.
How you choose to promote them could be as simple as just putting up a post about them to mentioning them in every post you put up for x days – or emailing all group members.
Flipping You can sell your Facebook groups on sites like http://flippa.com
All you need to do is show how many pages views and unique visitors your group gets as well as show them how many fans you currently have.
In addition if you have generated any revenue you can list that on your auction as well. However, just because your site doesn’t have any generated revenue doesn’t mean that you still can’t sell it for a decent price!
Facebook Advertising In almost every case, the best place to send paid Facebook traffic is to a fan page. Let’s walk through how this works so you can understand if it makes sense for you to use this in your marketing.
First, go to http://www.Facebook.com/ads and click on the “Create an Ad” button. This will take you to the ad interface.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
21 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
The first step is to design your ad:
This is an ad from a campaign I did for a local business. Let’s go through each part of it.
Destination: You can select pages, places, applications or external URLs to advertise. For fan pages I usually select the external URL instead of the page because I test different “landing pages” – meaning I send different visitors to different tabs in the fan page.
Title: You only have 25 characters, so you have to make it count. If you selected a fan page, it will automatically be the name of the fan page that shows up here. Again that’s why I usually pick external URLs to advertise, even if I’m sending the traffic to a fan page.
Body: Unlike Google PPC, Facebook lets you use calls to action – things like “Like Us Now!” and so forth are totally allowed and you should use them.
Image: Always use an image! To get your ad approved, you must use an image that is relevant to what you’re advertising, and ideally also at least somewhat related to your ad copy.
Related Page Or App: If you put your Facebook fan page URL In for the external URL you’re advertising, it will automatically be detected in Facebook as a “related page”. Then you can select to “show stories” in your ad. Hence why my ad says “Jason Fladlien likes FXB Lincoln Park”.

Now let’s move on to the next section of the Facebook Ad setup called Targeting.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
23 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
You can choose to target in a variety of ways. In this case I decided to target people who live in Chicago, IL, since that’s where this local business is located.
You can also target by age, and even gender – as in this case I am only advertising to females (hence the picture of the female in the ad J).
In addition, you can type in “Precise Interests” and Facebook will let you add those interests to your campaign.
If you select “Advanced Connection Targeting” you can drill your ads down further to show your ads only to people who are connected to certain pages, events, and/or apps… Or you can EXCLUDE people who are already connected to those things.
You can even choose relationship status, languages, sexual preference, education and work for the demographics you’d like to target.
While you’re selecting your demographics, there will be an estimated reach calculator on the right hand side of the page to give you an idea of your reach. In my case it shows:
So my ad is targeting females, 18 or older, who live in/near Chicago, and who have listed Physical Fitness as an interest on their Facebook profile. This criterion matches around 36,000 people.
Now that our targeting is done, the final step is budgeting.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
24 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
If you’re going to run multiple ads around one fan page, it’s wise to group them together in a campaign. In this case, we were running about 30 ads related to this local business, so I put them all under one campaign.
You can schedule the campaign as to when you want to start running it and (optionally) when you’d like the campaign to end.
You can either pay per thousand impressions (CPM) or pay per click. You then enter your max bid. Then place your order and you’re done!
Advanced Ad Strategies Creating ads in Facebook is very easy, but it can be very expensive if you don’t know what you’re doing. So let’s now discuss some advanced Facebook ad strategies.
Typical User Mindset The average Facebook user wants to be entertained and/or be part of something. This is different than, say, advertising on Google where the average user wants to find information.
If you don’t take into account what the group of people you’ll be targeting primarily use Facebook for, it’s going to be tough to make money advertising to them.
That’s why you should always test some sort of “entertainment” angle in at least one ad you run in a campaign. For example, in the Internet Marketing space, Frank Kern runs ads that say things like “How trashy novels can make you a better marketer” or something along those lines.
See how that is entertaining in addition to being informative? I’ve always wanted someone to test an ad that says “Which celebrity does your dog most look like?” and send them to a Facebook app J
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
25 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Viral Power Each time a person likes a fan page, it shows up in their feed and their friends can see it. This is powerful because the average Facebook user has around 130 friends.
In most cases, you’re going to want to use a “like/reveal” method on your fan pages. This is where you block off partial or full access to your fan page until the person clicks the Like button for the page.
To further incentivize people to click the Like button, offer them a free gift for doing so.
Software like WP Fan Pro makes this a snap to do.
In addition, remember that “liking” is much more than just for the page itself. Anytime someone likes a post, picture or anything else on your fan page, it will show up in their feed for all their friends to see.
Furthermore, if you get a person to post something on your fan page wall, THAT also shows up in their news feed as well.
So if you can encourage interaction and get people posting on your wall, liking your posts and more… The better effect you’ll have in general…
But specifically related to advertising, this means you can get your ads cheaper. For example if you know it takes three people visiting your page from an ad to get them to perform an action which brings in a fourth visitor for free (due to the viral aspect…) then your ads are actually 25% cheaper than what you are paying for them. J
Drill Down Deep It’s tempting to create Facebook ads that target multiple interests with one ad. I recommend you don’t do this.
Since it’s so quick to set up ads with Facebook, my mentality is one interest = one ad.
Also, in most cases I take it a step further and create different ads for males than for females so I can get even more specific with the type of copy and image that I use. Males tend to click more on ads that have a male person in them, and females tend to click on ads that have a female in them…
Image Tricks Which of these two images do you think produced a better click thru rate?
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
26 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
If you guessed the second image, you’d be correct. The only difference between these two images in I smudge my face in the second one. This works because it stands out and grabs attention.
Let’s do another one…
v
In this case the black and white one did better. Does that mean that black and white will always do better than color? No. But it can be worth a test. The reason is because almost everybody else advertises in color, so yours stands out because it’s NOT in color.
The next is to test a black and white one with a smudged face. J
Other things you can do to improve your click-‐throughs with images are:
• Put a colored border around your image. (Yellow really stands out!) • The maximum size of your image can be 110 by 80 so use as much of this size as you can. • However, really small images can work, too because again – they catch the eye because they
stand out. • Babies work for a LOT of ads. People love looking at babies, so if it is possible to make a tie-‐in to
the content of your ad, considering testing an image of a baby!
Timing In some instances, it might be wise to only run your ads at certain times of days, or ON certain days. It makes no sense for a local business, for example, to advertise on Facebook for a “call us” type of ad to be run during off-‐business hours.
In some instances, you might find your ads only work on the weekend, or only in the morning or evening. Always consider testing the time and/or day for your ads.
Staleness While Facebook ads have a LOT of great benefits, they do have one major drawback – the ads tend to fatigue much faster than traditional ads.
What does that mean? If you have a killer ad that is pulling like gang busters now, it might not even be profitable next week. Since your targeting is much more specific with Facebook, it’s easy for your audience to quickly become immune to your ad – no matter how good it is.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
27 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
Additionally Facebook users are much more likely to see an ad over and over again since they are constantly going to their profile page. Because of this constant exposure, you’re going to have to continually update your ads and constantly be running new ones.
Other Tips For Fan Page Traffic Below is a grab bag of additional tips that you can use to get traffic to your fan pages.
Events You can create an event at http://www.Facebook.com/events and invite your friends and even send invitations via email. In addition, your event will show up in your feed if you make it public, and also in the feeds of any person who joins your event.
Furthermore, you can run Facebook advertising campaigns targeting just people who sign up for your event.
I have a consulting client who makes a killing by forcing everyone who attends his webinars to first sign up for the event on Facebook. Then, he advertises to them before the event, constantly reminding them to attend the event… And after the webinar is over he advertises to them again promoting the offer he made at the end of the webinar.
SEO Fan pages can and often do get indexed rather quickly in Google. Don’t neglect to keyword optimize your fan page to get potential search engine traffic.
Keyword optimization covers more than just your written content. It also includes the names of your images, anchor text of links and more.
In addition, it’s worthwhile to build some backlinks to your fan pages. I have seen people get high ranking fan pages that show up number 1 on Google for moderately competitive terms with just a little bit of on-‐page keyword optimization and a handful of backlinks.

Fiverr At http://fiverr.com you can do a search for Facebook and find things like this:
Yep, for $5 you can get stuff like this all day long. But, are you going to get high quality traffic? Probably not, but here are two hot ways to utilize this.
The first is to get Likes to your fan page purely for the social proof. That way if you advertise it, people can see how many likes you have, and then THEY are more likely to check it out simply because it seems like it’s important since so many people have liked it.
FB Advocate HOW TO GET A TON OF TRAFFIC TO YOUR FAN PAGES
29 http://fbadvocate.com | Jason Fladlien, Rapid Crush, Inc.
The second way to use this is the absolute most powerful way that I know of. Here is the strategy. You find local businesses that have Facebook fan pages and aren’t doing much with them. You contact them and you make them a deal like this:
“If I get you X likes in the next 48 hours, would you have a conversation with me on how I can ________” with the blank being some sort of benefit that would result in them hiring you and paying you money for your services/consulting.
This is one of the best ways in the world to get your foot in the door with any local business, and it only costs you $5 to perform this for them!
Conclusion I have given you several different methods you can use to generate traffic to your fan pages, and also in Facebook in general.
Of course, none of these will benefit you if you just “know about them.” You actually have to put them in action. So take action. Pick ONE thing to do immediately from this guide today and do it. Then do another thing tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after…
If you approach it like this, you WILL get results.
