Remembering Our Loved Ones…

Sacramental Life

May They Rest in Peace In addition, we remember our

recently deceased relatives, friends and cherished members of our own parish community, especially:

Paul Longo

St Benedict: As we enter the church, we immediately encounter the St. Benedict window. This window consists of an image of St. Benedict being fed be the raven, an illusion to our sacramental feeding in the Eucharist, standing before a makeshift cross and tending a grape arbor which signifies the Benedictine’s avowed purpose, “Ora et Lebora”, work and prayer.

. . .

Next Saturday: 25th Anniversary Mass! The Stories Behind the Windows

The art work for St. Benedict is divided into two distinct medias represented by colored and etched glass set in a patented metal system designed by Gerhard M. Doud of Divine Media Liturgical Designs exclusively for the Church of St. Benedict.

These windows begin in

the back of the church and are defined by plants which are characteristic of the exterior of the church. Wheats and grasses of the field, running waters, birch trees and birds combine to form a panorama of the ever changing seasons.

The images begin with

Winter in the back of the church and moving forward into Spring at the front. As we move closer to the sanctuary, we become closer to new life. The imagery of water, wheat and light also pays tribute to the concrete presence in the Sacramentals and their use in the liturgy.

This window, located

in the gathering area, shows a scene that at first glance appears to be a rundown farm with a wood rail fence that gives one the appearance of three crosses set against the evening sky. Behind the fence are various grains surrounded by indigenous plants of the area forming a harvest scene paying tribute to the work of human hands.

Above the cross in our

sanctuary, we see a window in a circular motif which shows the presence of the Holy Spirit super-imposed against the sun, sky and clouds.

Its presence is a constant reminder to us of the Holy Spirit’s constant guidance over our lives and an added assurance of God’s gifts at work in our lives.

As one enters the church, you immediately encounter the

St. Benedict window. This window consists of an image of St. Benedict being fed by the raven, an illusion to our Sacramental feeding in the Eucharist, standing before a makeshift cross and tending a grape arbor which signifies the Benedictine’s avowed purpose, “Ora et Lebora”, work and prayer.

Today at the 11am Mass at St. Benedict, 90 students will sign their names and formally commit themselves to the Sacrament of Confirmation. This rite gives the candidates the opportunity to state publicly before the community that they are taking seriously this step in their sacramental lives. It also calls on us the community to state that we will support these young men and women in this journey.

Please join us in keeping our Confirmation students in our prayers as they prepare throughout this year for their Confirmation on March 28th, 2017 at St. Peter’s Cathedral.

Celebrating in the Life and Energy of Our Parish

The Catholic Choral Society will be presenting the 15th Annual Generations Sing Concert next Sunday, Nov. 20th at 7:30pm at St. Peter's Cathedral in Scranton. As in past years, this celebration concert strives to celebrate both ecumenical diversity and multigenerational singers. The Catholic Choral Society, marking its 69th Season, is composed of more than 50 choristers from throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania!

Generations Sing Concert at the Cathedral

The choir of Our Lady of the Snows will be

joining several of the local Abingtons church choirs at our neighbors on the hill, the First Presbyterian Church at 4pm on November 20th for the annual All Church Choir Concert!

This is surely an event that will lift us up in beautiful songs of worship to God. Perhaps an added reason to go is that our Pastor, Msgr. Quinn will be joining the Rev. Bill Carter at the piano for a special Duet.

Next Sunday: Concert Next Door

“You know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you, nor did we eat food received from anyone… We wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us.”

2 Thessalonians 3:8 An overused expression these days is ‘role model.’ It

often is cited when someone has failed to give the right example or falls from grace. While we have countless persons who really provide setting a good example, we sometimes fail to use “role model” to describe them.

Paul not only presented himself as a fine example, he invited others to imitate him. ‘Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.’ Consider some of our great saints of former times: Francis, Ignatius, Teresa or consider recently canonized saints as St. Pope John 23rd, St. John Paul II, or St. Teresa of Calcutta. Each offers some gift to imitate resulting in greater holiness.

Pray to and for those whose causes are being promoted: like Dorothy Day, Oscar Romero. Look in a mirror to see the reflection of a possible future saint!

Sunday Connection: Future Saints

This Wednesday: Workshop for all Lectors

After losing a loved one, the holiday season can

be anything but joyful. Next Sunday, November 20th, at 2pm in the OLS

Gathering Room, our Bereavement Ministry will host a presentation on coping with this difficult time of year. Our Bereavement Team has been helping people for years to deal with this sensitive topic. If you know someone who could benefit from this session, please reach out to them and invite them to share in this event.

For questions or to register, please call Nettie

Goldate at the Parish Office.

Today: Rite of Enrollment

All OLS/CSB lectors are requested to attend an important workshop for those engaged in proclaiming the word of God.

Set for this Wednesday evening, November 16th, at 6:30pm in our OLS Gathering Room, it will be an opportunity to update all lectors on

various aspects of this important ministry. Our newly- named Coordinator of Lectors, Valarie Clark, will be joining Msgr. Quinn for this hour long gathering.

That evening, we will also be distributing the new 2017 Workbook for Lectors.

Students in 8th – 12th grade are welcome to join us on Thursday nights from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the Our Lady of the Snows Gathering Room. Want to help serve those in need around us? Here are a few upcoming events where help is always needed. Please call Steve Wallo at the Parish Office for any questions.

Family to Family Each year at the Scranton

Cultural Center, Friends of the Poor helps provide over 3,000 meals to those in need throughout the area. We help with the distribution and assisting the people as they come through the doors.

The event this year will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd from 9am to 5pm. We usually go to volunteer from noon until 4pm. This is a great opportunity for whole families to lend a hand!

A Refugee Christmas On December 4th from 2-4pm, we will be joining

members of the St Gregory’s Service Commission to host a Christmas Party for local Bhutanese refugees and their children in Scranton. We will be running some games, crafts and caroling with the children.

Worldwide Candlelight Vigil At this annual event, held this year on December 13th

at 7pm at the Abington Library this year, we help to remember children throughout the community who have passed away. Each year we assist in greeting people and later reading off the names of the deceased. Join us for this moving event.

Remembering Those Who Have Gone Before Us… On November 2nd, All Souls’ Day,

we celebrated the lives of the 58 parishioners who have passed away over the course of this past year.

More than 150 parishioners joined us in this beautiful service remembering their loved ones.

May we all continue to keep these souls in our prayers.

Next Sunday, November 20th is the feast of

Christ the King. It also marks the end of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, a great time to look back at this past year and ask ourselves: where have I shown mercy and where have I been shown mercy?

This is also a time to remember that living lives of mercy continues well after this Jubilee Year has ended!

“We thirst for mercy, and no technology can quench that thirst,” the Pope recently told Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh and other religious leaders.

“We seek a love that endures beyond momentary pleasures, a safe harbor where we can end our restless wanderings, an infinite embrace that forgives and reconciles.”

“To bow down with compassionate love before the weak and needy is part of the authentic spirit of religion, which rejects the temptation to resort to force, refuses to barter human lives and sees others as brothers and sisters, and never mere statistics.”

As some may have already noticed, the beautiful grounds at Our Lady of the Snows have three new Japanese Maple Trees just planted this week!

Each of these magnificent trees can be a memorial honoring the life of a loved one. An appropriate permanent plaque will be installed at the base of each tree acknowledging the name of the deceased and the donor. If you are interested, each tree is available as a memorial for the sum of $500. Our new memorial gift opportunities are the result, unfortunately, of the necessary removal of two trees that, after 25 years, were causing damage to our church roof, foundation, and sidewalks. Thanks for your understanding, and more importantly,

for your ever generous ways. If interested, call Donna at the Parish Center.

Thanks to the generosity of 429 families, the sum of $71,590 has already been pledged and we have reached 77.8% of our goal!

Know how grateful we are for your Sunday offerings

from the weekend of November 5th – 6th:

Weekly Envelopes: $ 16,500.50 Online Giving: $ 1,489.00 Total Offerings: $ 17,989.50

Collection for the Care And Education of Priests: $1,091.00

Our Lady of the Snows Parish is once again looking to extend a helping hand this Christmas to those in need. The Tiny Tim Program assists so many families

throughout the Abingtons in being able to provide gifts for their children.

If you are a family in need, we are here to

help. Please call 570-498-8056 and ask for Jody McGrail.

Memorial Contribution Donations have been made recently to the Parish in loving memory of Jean Savitts from Craig & Nancy Smith and Mark & Bray Stahller. May we all keep Jean’s eternal peace in our prayers!

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young

American soldier embarks on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
