The MagnumStone system was effectively used at the renovation of the Sheetz convenience store in

Cresaptown, MD. The site retaining wall was originally specified as cast in place concrete, but the owner was

looking for alternatives. A conventional segmental wall would have been less expensive, but excavation for the

geogrid reinforcing would have been extensive. MagnumStone provided three benefits: cost savings,

reduced excavation, and no limitations for winter time construction. The wall was built as a gravity system utilizing both 2’ and 4’ concrete extensions. The

maximum exposed wall height is 12’ (13’ including embedment), and the wall depth at the bottom is only 6’

(2’ block + 4’ extension) minimizing excavation of the shale retained soils. The wall was built in the dead of

winter and the material deliveries had to be scheduled around snow events. It was extremely cold during

construction, but because only #57 stone backfill was used there were no delays due to frozen soils or compaction

concerns. It was the wall installer’s first MagnumStone wall and he loves how the product goes together. The

owner was very pleased and has since used MagnumStone on two other Sheetz store projects in PA.
