The BurmeseSiamese War (17851786), known as theNine Armies' Wars in Siamese history because theBurmese came in nine armies, was fought between theKonbaung dynasty of Burma and the Chakri dynasty ofresurgent Siam (Thailand).

King Bodawpaya of Burma pursued an ambitious campaignto expand his dominions into the lands of the formerAyutthaya Kingdom. His armies attacked Lanna in northernSiam, where the governor of Lampang managed to partlyhalt the Burmese, waiting for the troops from Bangkok. AsPhitsanulok was captured, Rama I, himself, led an army tothe north.

In the south, Bodawpaya lie waiting at Chedi Sam Ong. TheFront Palace (Maha Sura Singhanat) led his troops to thesouth the counter-attack the Burmese that came fromRanong through Nakhon Si Thammarat the engagementsoccurred at Kanchanaburi. The Burmese also attackedThalang (Phuket), where to governor had just died. Chan, wife of the governor, and her sister Mook gathered people todefend Thalang against the Burmese. Today, Chan andMook are revered as the two heroines, Thao Thepkrasattriand Thao Seesunthon.

The Burmese proceeded to capture Songkhla. Upon hearingthe news, the governors of Phatthalung Province fled. However, a monk named Phra Maha headed a force ofvillagers against the Burmese. Phra Maha was later raised to

    Phraya Thukkharat by Rama I.[3]

As his armies were destroyed, Bodawpaya retreated, only torenew attacks the next year (1786). Bodawpaya, this time, didnt divide his troops but instead formed into single army.Bodawpaya passed through the Chedi Sam Ong and settledin Ta Din Dang. The Front Palace marched the Siameseforces to face Bodawpaya. The fighting was very short and Bodawpaya was quickly defeated. This short warwas called Ta Din Dang campaign.

The campaign is commemorated by a park established by the Royal Thai Army 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the

    town of Kanchanaburi.[4]
