“The Burlington competition not only provides our citizens an opportunity to see these creative works, but also has fostered other partnerships that give strength to the event. Behind the scenes, the department of Parks and Recreation staff bring their resources and expertise together to form the blocks used by the competitors. The sculptors themselves form a support system with each other amid the friendly rivalry and often harsh conditions inherent in working outside. The state of Vermont is represented in a national competition that furthers the art and sends representatives to an international competition. Businesses join the ‘team’ with support ranging from food and lodging to ‘goodies’ to represent Vermont at the national event. At every step of the way partnerships are formed to build an event for the benefit of our community”

— Nancy Bove, Special Events Coordinator, Parks & Recreation Department

Keep an eye on them at the nationals at www.usnationals.org

Last year’s snow sculpting winner, Frank Barsalow, carved a scene of penguins partying entitled “Party Penguins”. He came up with the idea from watching his sister, Agnes, do the Penguin Plunge year after year. “It seemed the plungers had a party hearty temperament about them that is hilarious” Frank said. His three person team consisting of himself (as captain), Sean Rogers and Katya Andrievskaya has been carving snow sculptures together for over five years now. It was this team that won the Vermont competition and this team that will be going on to represent Vermont at this years national competition in Lake Geneva, Feb. 5, 2011. This was the ninth year for his team competing at the Burlington Winter festival. When asked if he has had good experiences at the festival, this is what he said: “We always have a blast while out there carving. In fact the whole process is really fun, from conception of a sculpture idea to preliminary drawings, to the last shavings to produce a finished piece. The best part has to be how well all of the sculptors are treated by Nancy Bove and her Parks and Recreation staff, and moreover the team of UVM students that participate in the project that helps organize the winterfest... To tell you the truth I’m surprised more people don’t sign up to compete.”

‘Young Folks Doing Old Stuff’ “Young Tradition Vermont supports chil-dren (under 13), youth (teens), young adults (under 30), their families, and their mentors/teachers interested in traditional singing, play-ing and dancing. We recognize that life-long interest in, appreciation for, and involvement in traditional singing, playing and dancing is established early in life. And we recognize that families with children with life-threatening illnesses benefit from financial support. Our mission is to ensure opportunities for

young players, singers and dancers to be supported, have opportunities to learn, perform, and interact with others with similar interests, develop and experiment as part of a living tradition passed down from previous generations, and that proceeds from events are used to support families with children who have life-threatening illnesses.” — Mark Sustic

CHURCH STREET MARKETPLACEHistoric, award-winning Church Street Marketplace District is nestled in the heart of downtown Burlington, Vermont. Built in 1981, Burlington’s Church Street Marketplace District is a business improvement district and is managed by the Church Street Marketplace, a department of the City of Burlington. The Marketplace District is extensively programmed and managed to be a lively place throughout the year. Restaurants, street vendors, and more than 100 retail shops lend Vermont’s favorite pedestrian mall a distinctive flair -- part rural spice, part urban utopia. — Ron Redmond, Executive Director, Church Street Marketplace
