WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZARTLe nozze di Figaro

Le nozze di Figaro is the curtain-raiser on a cycle of Mozart’s Da Ponte operas performed at this year’s Winter Festival. The Accademia di Montegral’s first-class Mozart ensemble will kick off this concert series, which will continue in the coming win-ters. With this cycle of Mozart operas the Tyrolean Festival Erl is finally proclaiming its love for this outstanding composer from Salzburg. Full of eroticism, deep emotions, and joy of playing – and at long last with a sensible understanding of “alla-breve” – this Figaro is a work close to the heart of the Festival ensemble and especially of director and conductor Gustav Kuhn.

GIUSEPPE VERDINabucco

Few operas have been served so badly by a mindless and poorly informed opera industry as Verdi’s Nabucco. A bel canto opera through and through, Nabucco has been mutated into an ex-cessively embroidered, heavy-weight Grand Opéra. Especially because the opera’s distorted version is so popular, we in Erl need to demonstrate how the work was most likely intended by the composer.

With a deliberately lyrical cast of Donizetti and Bellini spe-cialists, an insightful stage design by Delugan Meissl Associ-ated Architects and Roman Delugan (who created his first opera set ever in a theater designed by himself), functional costumes by Lenka Radecky, and with Andreas Leisner a producer who acts in sync with Gustav Kuhn’s understanding of musical architecture and work interpretation, the Tyrolean Festival Erl is working on a bel canto style that is truly werktreu (faithful to the composer’s intentions).

Tyrolean Winter Festival Erl

The evening starts with a composition by Angelo di Monte-gral, the “artistic spirit” of the Convento dell’Angelo, the seat of the Accademia di Montegral. As nod to the origins of the Accademia di Montegral as bel canto academy, Montegral’s work is followed by three excerpts from operas by Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, the great masters of the bel canto opera. The new Festspielhaus will provide the perfect environment for bel canto operas and thus the work of the Accademia di Mon-tegral. The first part of the evening is brought to a close with a premiere by the star composer Daniel Schnyder who embod-ies the high quality of contemporary compositions, which we consider good at the present and very important for the future.

(Duke Bluebeard’s Castle)ANGELO DI MONTEGRAL

Omaggio a Bartók XXI b (premiere)

After the interval, the audience will be treated to a 20th-cen-tury masterpiece: Béla Bartók’s thrilling one-act opera Duke Bluebeard’s Castle. The opera tells the extraordinary story of Bluebeard and Judith, a story that deals with the “eternally female and male”. Bartók’s masterpiece, Duke Bluebeard’s Cas-tle can be regard as elementary for the future development of music. As always, Gustav Kuhn’s production is inspired by the music alone.

By leaving the podium to a new generation of composers from the Accademia di Montegral, Hans Peter Haselsteiner and Gustav Kuhn take the opening of the new Festspielhaus as an opportunity to send out a strong signal of their commitment to up-and-coming talents.

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHMass in B Minor, BWV 232

The 1st Winter Festival of the Tyrolean Festival Erl will pre-sent Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B minor. Together with the bel canto operas, the Mozart-Bach axis forms a basis of the musical-artistic concept of the new Festspielhaus. Like the Goldberg Variations, the Art of the Fugue etc, Bach created his Mass in B minor as an ideal type. A masterpiece of the finest order, the Mass in B minor will be the first great choral work to be performed in the new Festspielhaus. The colossal composition is a “high mass” in the best sense of the word and befitting for solemn occasions.

GIOACCHINO ROSSINIPetite Messe Solennelle

Gioacchino Rossini created his Petite Messe Solennelle 34 years after his last opera. The witty composer prefaced his mass with the words: “Good God […] you know well, I was born for comic opera. Little science, a little heart, that is all. So may you be blessed, and grant me Paradise!” The Petite Messe Solennelle continues to be a central piece in the repertoire of the Choir Academy, which draws from a roster of brilliant international soloists.

GIUSEPPE VERDI et al

Those lucky enough to have witnessed the young singers of the Accademia di Montegral sing in the refectory of the Con-vento dell’Angelo near Lucca know that their performances are acoustic explosions of passion.

On New Year’s Eve, the musicians will bid farewell to 2012 with highlights from the most beautiful bel canto operas by Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini, and canzoni napoletane. The evening will end with a dazzling finale. The singers and orches-tra are led by the young conductor on the rise, William Lacey.

Those who have given up on the idea of ever getting tickets for the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic can now look forward to Gustav Kuhn’s New Year’s Concert at the Festspielhaus in Erl. The program includes the greatest works by the Strauss family and is rounded out with compositions by Franz von Suppés and other famous composers from the golden age of the Viennese operetta. The Winter Festival performance will capture the blend of humor, sentiment and charm that define the Viennese operetta and is guaranteed to inspire and delight the audience, as did the Fledermaus in Kufstein in 2002.

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVENMissa Solemnis

Thanks to its monumental nature, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis pushes the boundaries of church music. Much rather, the Missa is the composer’s most important statement of spirituality and represents Beethoven’s struggle to come to terms with belief. Its immense size, the sudden changes in character, harmony and rhythm, and an extremely complex choral writing make the Missa Solemnis an exceptionally difficult work to play. From the gigantic fugue Et vitam venturi to the disturbing prayer Dona nobis pacem, Beethoven’s composition places immense demands on the musicians.

The 1st Tyrolean Winter Festival Erl will end with a “Request for Inner Peace” (Beethoven in the autograph) on 6 January 2013.

The Tyrolean Festival Erl’s much loved Chamber Music Eve-nings kick off with a concert of the two pianists Jasminka Stancul and Davide Cabassi. In this form, this very special piano evening is only possible at the Tyrolean Festival Erl and only in the context of the Accademia di Montegral.

Where else would you find two very different – yet spiritu-ally and musically very similar – pianists perform together? Respect, friendship and artistic integrity permit both pianists to perform from their “most personal” repertories: critically ac-claimed Mr. Cabassi will play Schumann and Beethoven; award winner Jasminka Stancul Beethoven. The musicians’ readi-ness to perform together needs no explanation, and their joint Schubert performance far exceeds any verbal categorization.

ENSEMBLE RISOGNANZE

FAUSTO ROMITELLIProfessor BadTrip

Lesson I, Lesson II, Lesson III

The second evening of the New Year is dedicated to contem-porary music. Tito Ceccherini, passionate advocate of modern music, internationally renowned conductor and close friend of the Tyrolean Festival Erl, will conduct the Risognanze en-semble with which he has already performed at the Tyrolean Festival Erl several times.

Romitelli’s Professor BadTrip (1998 –2000), one of the most important pieces of experimental music of the late 20th century, is preceded by a performance that is typical of Erl. Tito Cec-cherini will help the audience understand Romitelli’s compo-sition by presenting works of other composers (as reference for the nature of the composition) who greatly influenced the development of Fausto Romitelli’s spectralism. Ceccherini will read quotes from Richard Wagner and Béla Bartók, works and fragments by Giacinto Scelsi, Györyi Ligeti, Tristan Murail, Hugues Dufourt and Gérard Grisey. As always with Tito Cec-cherini and his musicians, the audience can look forward to a passionate and dynamic concert experience.

FRANUIThe Doppelgänger Effect

Rectival Evening for Musicbanda and a Singer Who Finally Arrived

It all started with the singer not showing up. It was him who got the musicians of Franui to perform songs by the world’s greatest composers. But on the day of the gala concert at the bandstand in Innervillgraten – the valley from which most of Franui’s members hail – the singer missed the entrance to the valley and ended up somewhere near Panzendorf. What else was the Musicbanda to do than perform everything them-selves? First Schubert lieder (basically without one word being sung), then folk songs by Brahms (with actual singers), and finally Mahler lieder (this is where the singer finally did show up – for the last four songs).

And now he is finally here. His name is Michael Kupfer and he will perform with Franui and the pianist Margarita Oganesjan lieder by Schubert, Schumann, Mahler and Berg.

Gustav Kuhn

Born in Salzburg, Gustav Kuhn studied conducting with Hans Swarovsky, Bruno Maderna and Herbert von Karajan at the Conservatories in Vienna and Salzburg and graduated from the Salzburg University in philosophy, psychology and psy-chopathology. Kuhn was only 24 years old when he won the prestigious international conducting competition of the Aus-trian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

From 1970 to 1977 Kuhn worked as choirmaster and con-ductor at the Istanbul Opera House, then as 1st Chapel Master at the Dortmund Opera House. During this time he already gave guest performances in Palermo, Naples and Bologna. Later he had engagements as guest director in Rome, Florence, Venice and Zurich. Gustav Kuhn also conducted the Berlin Philhar-monics, the Dresden State Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala in Milan, the Orchestre Na-tional de France in Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo, and, last but not least, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1974 Kuhn found-ed the Institute for Aleatoric Music in Salzburg; in 1977 he made his debut at the Vienna State Opera with Richard Strauss’ Elektra; only a year later, in 1978, he debuted at the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival; the following season Maestro Kuhn made his conducting debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in London and was engaged as General Music Director in Bern; in 1980 Kuhn opened the Glynde-bourne Festival. More debuts followed: 1981 with Fidelio in Chicago; 1982 with Così fan tutte at the Paris Opera; 1984 with Tannhäuser at Milan’s Scala; 1986 with Un ballo in maschera at Arena di Verona. In 1986 Gustav Kuhn started to direct and produce operas to achieve a greater artistic union between a work’s visual and musical components. Kuhn produced and staged The Flying Dutchman (Triest), Parsifal (Naples), Salome (Rome), Don Carlos (Turin), Don Giovanni (Festival di Mac-erata), Rossini’s Otello (Berlin, Braunschweig and Tokyo), La Bohème (Tokyo), Ariadne on Naxos (Milan), Falstaff (Tokyo),

27

among others. In 1986 Gustav Kuhn made his debut as opera director with the Flying Dutchman in Trieste (stage design and costumes: Peter Pabst); in 1993 he developed the “Hall Opera” series for Suntory Hall Opera in Tokyo; Kuhn stayed with the Salzburg Festival until 1997 (1989 Un ballo in maschera; 1992, 1994 and 1997 La clemenza di Tito). From 1983 to 1985 Kuhn served as general music director at the Bonn Opera, followed by engagements as head conductor of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and later as artistic director of the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. From 1990 to 1994 Kuhn headed the music festival in Macerata. Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of “Neue Stimmen” (New Voices), an international singing competition by the German Bertelsmann Foundation in Gütersloh, since 1987. In 1992 Kuhn founded the Accademia di Montgral, head-quartered at the Convento dell’Angelo in Lucca (Tuscany) since 2000. In 1997 Kuhn founded the Tyrolean Festival Erl. After working on Wagner’s Ring for several years, Kuhn took the production on tour for the first time in 2005 (Santander) and produced the now legendary 24-hour Ring. The same year Dr. Hans Peter Haselsteiner agreed to become president of the Tyrolean Festival Erl; the construction of the Festspielhaus is largely owed to his efforts and commitment. By the end of summer 2012 Gustav Kuhn will have directed and conducted all of Wagner’s grand operas at Erl’s Passionsspielhaus. The opening of the Festspielhaus is scheduled for December 2012.

Gustav Kuhn has been artistic director of the Haydn Orches-tra of Bolzano and Trento since January 2003. In 2010 Kuhn instituted the South Tyrol Festival (Toblach / Dobbiaco) at the urging of Governor Dr. Luis Durnwalder.

Gustav Kuhn’s compositions include orchestra works, mass-es and solo pieces; his instrumentation of Janácek’s Diary of One Who Disappeared met with great acclaim at the Opéra National de Paris (released at Edition Peters). Kuhn has been performing the Delirium concert series in his hometown of Salzburg annually since 2007. Gustav Kuhn’s recording are available at col legno, BMG, EMI, CBS, Capriccio, Supraphon, Orfeo, Koch / Schwann, Coreolan, ARTE NOVA and others.

Orchestra of the Tyrolean Festival Erl

Founded in the summer of 1999, the Orchestra generated en-thusiastic audiences and critical acclaim in its first year at the Tyrolean Festival Erl. The Orchestra is an amalgamation of the finest talents, experienced musicians from renowned international orchestras, chamber music specialists and teach-ers who share a passion for classical works and a dedication to musical perfection.

Every summer and winter the musicians meet up at the Tyrolean Festival Erl or for guest performances to perform the magnificent works of Wagner and Strauss as well as romantic and classical concert pieces. With Gustav Kuhn as spiritus rector and musical director, the orchestra has received lavish praise and great international acclaim.

The Orchestra’s repertory is extremely diverse and includes Richard Wagner’s ten dramatic operas, operas by Strauss, Mo-zart, Beethoven and Rossini, Beethoven’s symphonies and a wide range of classical music from baroque to romantic, as well as contemporary compositions and premieres.

Choir Academyof the Tyrolean Festival Erl

Founded in 2007, the Choir Academy is on par with the Fes-tival Orchestra. The Choir Academy, too, offers its members a holistic development as artists, and focuses on strengthening the individual voice within the choral setting.

Artistic director of the young ensemble is Gustav Kuhn. The Choir Academy has a base of 32 members but can vary in size depending on the repertoire being performed, which ranges from a cappella music to great concert and opera productions.

The Choir Academy of the Tyrolean Festival Erl places great emphasis on the quality and training of the individual voice. Singers receive significant individual attention, making it pos-sible for singers to expand their musical and vocal potential.

The Choir Academy’s concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Mahler’s Sym-phony No. 8, Joseph Haydn’s Nelson Mass, and Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle. Under Marco Medved, the Choir Academy performed in opera productions of The Mas-tersingers of Nuremberg, Fidelio, Electra, The Magic Flute and The Flying Dutchman, Tannhäuser, Parsifal, Lohengrin and Tosca as well as in a cappella concerts.

Accademia di Montegral

In today’s competitive free market young professionals like singers, conductors, répétiteurs, stage designers and costume designers often find themselves left out in the cold and there-fore ultimately doomed to fail. What once was the respon-sibility of theater and music directors, namely the support and professional education of young artists, today is often subject to their arbitrariness and the dictate of the entertain-ment industry. In addition, the opera is in the throes of an economic and structural crisis: high operating costs, expensive technology, grand trappings, a sluggish – and sometimes hos-tile – bureaucracy, and incompetent opera makers add to the already challenging situation. As a result there are many poorly trained and easy-to-replace young musicians, and, ultimately, a decreasing interest in opera, especially among younger peo-ple. The Accademia di Montegral sees its purpose in providing support and education as well as promoting the art form of the opera. The groundwork was laid in 1987 when conductor and director Gustav Kuhn founded the Accademia in Italy. Later, sister institutions were set up in Germany (1993) and in Japan (1994; Tokyo Suntory-Hall).

The “Convento dell’Angelo” near Lucca (Tuscany) has been the artistic center of the Accademia di Montegral since October 2000. The way the Accademia works is that certain topics are chosen which are then discussed and debated by students and renowned experts (e.g. elocutionists, répétiteurs, conduc-tors, directors, etc.) during class. The Accademia also provides practice-oriented information on a variety of topics such as casting, fees, etc.

The Accademia offers its high-level support not only to talented young singers but also to artists from related fields such as instrumentalists, conductors, composers and direc-tors. This way it is possible for the Accademia di Montegral to produce and perform complete opera productions itself. Some of the Accademia di Montegral’s esteemed honorary members include Francisco Araiza, Albert Dohmen, Gertrud Ottenthal, Peter Pabst and Renato Bruson. Funding and support for the Accademia’s programs comes largely from sponsors and private benefactors.

Project Montegral Help for Streetchildren in Brazil

The Accademia di Montegral is located inside the Convento dell’Angelo, a monastery of the Passionists, a Roman Catholic religious order. After hundreds of years at the Convento, which is beautifully set high above Lucca, a shortage of new priests and the dilapidated condition of the monastery forced the Pas-sionists to leave the Convento in the 1990ies and look for a new use of the building. In 2000 Gustav Kuhn’s Accademia di Montegral found its home in the Convento.

The Passionists, who live their faith through commitment to those who suffer, are dedicated to social work and fight-ing poverty worldwide. The Passionists of Brazil have several projects running in Salvador, Itabuna and Jequie to offer street children a better future and an alternative to life on the streets.

The Accademia di Montegral supports the work of the Pas-sionist Order in Brazil. Any assistance as well as donations are greatly appreciated. Please make your donation payable to: “Projekt Montegral, Hilfe für die Straßenkinder Brasiliens”

Costume Design Studioof the Tyrolean Festival Erl

Musical diversity, unconventional views and a commitment to art outside the mainstream industry have defined the produc-tions of the Tyrolean Festival Erl from the very beginning. Gustav Kuhn’s quest to create an unmistakable signature style for the Festival led to the formation of a dedicated design studio in 2007. As head of the design studio, Lenka Radecky is responsible for both the technical and artistic aspects of costume design. Mrs. Radecky has surrounded herself with a highly qualified team of costume interpreters, tailors and as-sistants to ensure that no detail is missed.

The design studio of the Tyrolean Festival Erl combines highest demands on quality and expertise with deep knowl-edge, highly specialized work experience, and a passion for (opera) materials. The design studio of the Tyrolean Festival Erl is experienced in all aspects of costume design and produc-tion. In addition to designing for the Tyrolean Festival Erl, the design studio continues to work with other clients and also of-fers bespoke tailoring for private customers, including evening wear, bridal gowns, historic costumes and other handcrafts. All designing and sewing is done by hand and with great attention to even the minutest detail.

FESTSPIELHAUS

Page 38: Tyrolean Festival Erl Winter 2012/13

38

Project description

by Delugan Meissl Associated Architects

The Festspielhaus’ geometry develops from the surrounding topography and places the building and the already existing Passionsspielhaus in juxtaposition. Its positioning relates to the existing landscape, the dynamic gesture of the histori-cal counterpart, as well as the background rock formations. The buildings face each other, complement and increase the respective constructional articulation of the reference to the landscape and enter an atmospheric interaction. Geometry and colour stress the duality of old and new. While the existing building comes to the fore during the summer festival period, the change of the seasons causes a reversal in the colours of the ensemble.

The building is similar in design to tectonic stratification with interrupting faults whose strategic positioning points the way into the building’s interior. At night, the distinct façade allows insight into the gleaming interior and generates a tantalising entrance into the festival hall’s foyer. The topographic im-printing in the landscape continues inside the building where two central parameters direct the architectural approach: the interplay between the building’s interior and the surrounding nature as well as the concentrated, spatial composition of a

39

functionally optimised concert hall of international repute. Existing characteristics of the surrounding area are reinforced by the conceptual design. Flowing visual and functional spatial references define the design method: Spaces of different zoning and configurations implement the focus on communication and peace, dynamics and concentration. Architectural condi-tions in the building’s interior are devolved into a subtle con-trol of the motion sequences through their sensual perception.

The access staircase is integrated into the terrain’s topography and leads visitors into the building’s interior. The cloakroom and reception desk are located close to the entry. The foyer – an asymmetrical space – allows a wide range of impressions of the surrounding natural environment as well as to the exist-ing Passionsspielhaus. In the opposite direction, a staircase leads to the gallery on the level above where the relationship between interior and exterior relations is once again impres-sively experienced by the extensively glass-fronted western façade. Secondary functions of the building are also located at the upper level. Paths and spatial layout are designed both functionally as well as atmospherically: vast communication zones, narrowing and widening circulation areas and varying ceiling heights translate the tectonic building geometry in a sensually comprehensible way. Coherently, the approach to the concert hall is effectively emphasised by the gentle rise of the entry level. The concert hall, which is situated at the centre of the building like a shell and is anchored to the rock at the back, is connected to the foyer via two accesses on each level. The passage from the foyer into the concert hall is accompanied by a spatial and atmospheric transformation: Dynamics, variability and asymmetry of the foyer give way to highest concentration, static peace and orthogonality.

Corresponding to the flowing sequence of rooms, the physi-ological perception of each area is at the centre of the ma-

Page 40: Tyrolean Festival Erl Winter 2012/13

40

teriality concept. Haptic as well as optical differentiations in the interior follow the building’s functional geometry and contribute to orientation by intuitive allocations of spatial elements and functional areas. The foyer’s bright rays in hi-bernal twilight emphasises the focus on communication in this space of encounter. Following the metaphor of an excavated jewel, the concert hall offers a change of materials: wooden surfaces and sober colours come together in a warm, atmos-pheric spatial composition of suspenseful peace and focus the visitors’ concentration and perception on to the performance. Multiple technical fixtures as well as the transformability of the hall allow for manifold uses, which go beyond those of a traditional concert and festival establishment.

Erl – The Passion Play and Festival Town in Tyrol

Erl (pop. 1,450) is located in the North-Tyrolean Unterinntal Valley, on the border with Bavaria and about 15 kilometers from Kufstein. Tyrol’s northernmost and lowest town once was a Roman estate known as Praedium Aurelianum. A Mithra stone with the inscription “DIM PRO SALUTE” was found dur-ing excavations at the parish and shows that Romans settled here as early as 300 AD. The first time Erl was mentioned in an official document, the Notitia Arnonis, a list of the pos-sessions of Salzburg’s archbishopric, is 788 AD. Erl and Erl’s parish, which is dedicated to Saint Andreas the Apostle, were destroyed several times during the course of history. Under Emperor Maximilian Erl, together with Rattenberg, Kitzbühel and Kufstein, was finally ceded to Tyrol in 1504. Erl is one of the Inntal Valley’s oldest villages.

Erl’s main attractions include the “Blaue Quelle” (Blue Spring) which has an average flow rate of 700 liters per second, Trockenbach waterfall, the legendary “Erler Herz”, a heart-shaped mountain pass, and the Calvary overlooking the Inntal valley. Great and easily accessible vista mountains are Kranz- horn (1,367 m) with its two summit crosses, and Spitzstein (1,596 m). The former Gasthof Zollhaus Inn at the wooden Inn bridge boasts a memorial plaque for Adolf Pichler, the famous geologist and local historian who was born here in 1819.

49

The tradition of performing religious plays can be traced back to 1613 when pilgrims on their way from Munich to Altöt-ting stopped by in Erl to see an Easter play. The oldest text was written by the Augsburg mastersinger Sebastian Wild and dates from the 16th century. Built between 1957 and 1959 on plans by Robert Schuller, a student of Clemens Holzmeister, the Passionsspielhaus has a tiered stage and is Austria’s largest orchestra theater. The Erl Passion Play, which is acted by six hundred local villagers, has been staged every six years since the theater’s completion. To this day some 800,000 visitors have come to see the unique performances in Erl. The music, which has changed several times in the course of the Play’s history and included everything from religious chants to the wonderful compositions of Cesar Bresgen and Wolfram Wag-ner, is always performed by local musicians.

In 2013 Erl will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its Pas-sion Play. For this occasion the famous Tyrol-born writer Felix Mitterer was commissioned to write a new text. Director will be Markus Plattner from Schwaz, stage design will be by Annelie Büchner, costume design by Lenka Radecky.
