The top mounding is nicely shaped and ties-in well to the edge of the green. Hole 6 A drive through the trees to a natural rise means that no bunkers are in view from the tees. Potential natural area for a fairway bunker on the left Hole 5 Long uphill par 3 protected by two circular greenside bunkers. Both bunkers are visible from the tee but with rounded back edges resulting in low visual impact. Hole 2 All fairway bunkers are visible from the tees although partially hidden by the trees on the right-side rough. They frame the fairway well and provide golfers with an obvious direction. 2A, 2B and 2C All are holding water following rainfall from the previous night. Exterior shaping is relatively flat and the interior shape is rounded. Individually the bunkers are fairly bland but as a complex of three they work well together. 2D Also holding water. Some character on the exterior shaping but edges are still fairly rounded and could benefit aesthetically from some natural contouring. 2E Gradually comes in to view as you progress down the fairway. Well positioned strategically to influence approach shots to the green. Back edge is a little rounded and lacking character for what should be a feature bunker. Potential to tie-in visually to the greenside bunker. 2F Good shape with some character and ties- in nicely to the green surface. 2G Less shape and character to 2F. Potential to slightly re- orientate and create further interest on this side of the green. Hole 1 Tees are raised so all fairway bunkers are visible. Greenside bunker is partially hidden by new planting. 1A, 1B and 1C– Exterior shaping on the surrounds works well but interior shape is rounded and lacks character due to some regress of turf. Topsoil and stones are exposed on a sharp lip, resulting in contamination of the bunker sand. 1D - The greenside bunker is circular in shape and out of character with the fairway bunkers. Tie-in to the surrounding topography is awkward and makes it look detached from the green surface. Soil and stones are exposed on the back edge. Hole 13 No fairway bunkers. Left greenside is visible from the tee and right is hidden by the tree-line. 13A Right greenside bunker is very deep with a severe, worn and overhanging lip resulting in dificult recovery. 13B Left greenside bunker is well- positioned but fits awkwardly in to the surrounding topography. Hole 12 - Dogleg par 4 with two prominent bunkers visible from the tees. 12A and 12B Two large fairway bunkers which span 41 yards of the fairway even though the view from the tee suggests that they sit side by side. Opportunity to separate and create a strong feature as the only driveable fairway bunkers on the back nine. Both holding water. 12C Large, well-positioned greenside bunker with good surrounding shape. Sharp lip on the back edge. 12D Small, well-positioned bunker. Round in shape with a sharp lip and holding water. side at 220yards from the back tee and 140yards from the front tee. 6A The left greenside bunker becomes visible as you arrive over the rise and is the dominant strategic element of the hole. The visible edge is mostly due to the sharp lip so may benefit from re- shaping of the back mounding to create a new sand line. Hole 3 No fairway bunkers with a blind landing area. Front greenside bunkers are visible from the elevated tee and from a distance they frame the green nicely. The back-greenside bunker looks detached from the green as seen from the tees and approach. More dramatic lines on the back edges would give an even stronger effect. Shaping on the right-side of the green complex is generally stronger than on the left. All 3 bunkers are holding water. 3A Relatively shallow greenside bunker which protects the left side of the green well. Slightly awkward tie-in to green surface and could benefit from more shape to the leading edge. 3B Deeper bunker with plenty of character on external shaping. Protects and frames the approach to the green. 3C A circular, shallow bunker which is somewhat out of character with the front bunkers. Nice external undulations which could be utilised in some other form. Hole 15 No fairway bunkers in play from the tee shot. Three fairway/approach bunkers just short of the green and one greenside bunker. 15A, 15B, 15C and 15D All large and circular in shape with flashed-up sand faces resulting in dificult maintenance, particularly obvious on 15D. Out of character with other bunker size and styles on the course. External shaping is somewhat bland and lacking character, with poor tie-in to bunker edges. All are holding water in the bunker floors. Approach bunkers (3) are set back from the green generally punishing higher handicappers. Hole 16 - No fairway bunkers. Possibly an opportunity to create a bunker at 250yards from the back tees. Three greenside bunkers visible from approach. 16A and 16B Both right-side bunkers are well positioned and easily visible from the approach. Both are oval in shape with rounded back edges and sharp lips. 16C The left-side bunker is visible but less so than on the right, the view slightly obstructed by some of the external undulation. Hole 7 - Fairway bunker and greenside bunkers are all visible from the tees. 7A The fairway bunker is large and shallow with a very flat back edge resulting in low visual impact from the tee. It runs perpendicular to the fairway edge, sitting within the rough and as a result does not tie naturally in to the shape of the hole. 7B and 7C Two bunkers run up to the right edge of the green and create a double hazard. Both are circular in shape and could be tied more naturally in to their surrounds which have some interesting undulation. Hole 10 - A blind drive with no fairway bunkers. The two front greenside bunkers become visible as the golfer arrives over the rise but the back-left bunker is less visible. 10A Not visible on approach. Hidden behind the surrounding undulation. Circular in shape. 10B Well positioned bunker but lacking in character, particularly on the back edge, for what could be a stand-out feature bunker. 10C Well positioned, deep bunker with a sharp lip which protects the front right of the gre en. The mou ndi ng bet wee n the san d edg e and the gre en edg e is ste ep and res ult s in an awk war d tie -in and exaggerated depth resulting in dificult recovery. There is an opportunity to re-shape this entire area to fit better and resolve some surface drainage issues at the entrance to the green. Hole 8 Both bunkers are visible from the tee although the front bunker is more dominant with a steep sand face and sharp lip.

Page 1: BUNKER ASSESSMENT 2017 ASSESSMENT 2017

Hole 4 – Blind driving hole so no bunkers are visible from the tees.4A – Left bunker is visible from the approach but looks detached and the circular shape doesn’t allow a natural tie-in to the green edge.4B – Very deep greenside bunker with a sharp, soil-exposed lip which further exaggerates the dificulty of a recovery shot. The top mounding is nicely shaped and ties-in well to the edge of the green.

Hole 6 – A drive through the trees to a natural rise means that no bunkers are in view from the

tees.Potential natural area for a fairway bunker on the left

Hole 5 – Long uphill par 3 protected by two circular greenside bunkers. Both bunkers are visible from the tee but with rounded back edges resultingin low visual impact.

Hole 2 – All fairway bunkers are visible from the tees although partially hidden by the trees on the right-side rough. They frame the fairway well and provide golfers with an obvious direction. 2A, 2B and 2C – All are holding water following rainfall from the previous night. Exterior shaping is relatively flat and the interior shape is rounded. Individually the bunkers are fairly bland but as a complex of three they work well together.2D – Also holding water. Some character on the exterior shaping but edges are still fairly rounded and could benefit aesthetically from some natural contouring.2E – Gradually comes in to view as you progress down the fairway. Well positioned strategically to influence approach shots to the green. Back edge is a little rounded and lacking character for what should be a feature bunker. Potential to tie-in visually to the greenside bunker.2F – Good shape with some character and ties-in nicely to the green surface.2G – Less shape and character to 2F. Potential to slightly re-orientate and create further interest on this side of the green.

Hole 1 – Tees are raised so all fairway bunkers are visible. Greenside bunker is partially hidden by new planting.1A, 1B and 1C– Exterior shaping on the surrounds works well but interior shape is rounded and lacks character due to some regress of turf. Topsoil and stones are exposed on a sharp lip, resulting in contamination of the bunker sand.1D - The greenside bunker is circular in shape and out of character with the fairway bunkers. Tie-in to the surrounding topography is awkward and makes it look detached from the green surface. Soil and stones areexposed on the back edge.

Hole 13 No fairway bunkers. Left greenside is visible from the tee and right is hidden by the tree-line.13A – Right greenside bunker is very deep with a severe, worn and overhanging lip resulting in dificult recovery.13B – Left greenside bunker is well-positioned but fits awkwardly in to the surrounding topography.

Hole 12 - Dogleg par 4 with two prominent bunkers visible from the tees.12A and 12B – Two large fairway bunkers which span 41 yards of the fairway even though the view from the tee suggests that they sit side by side. Opportunityto separate and create a strong feature as the only driveable fairway bunkers on the back nine. Both holding water.12C – Large, well-positioned greenside bunker with good surrounding shape. Sharp lip on the back edge. 12D – Small, well-positioned bunker. Round in shapewith a sharp lip and holding water.

side at 220yards from the back tee and 140yards from the front tee.6A – The left greenside bunker becomes visible as you arrive over the rise and is the dominant strategic element of the hole. The visible edge is mostly due tothe sharp lip so may benefit from re-shaping of the backmounding to create a new sand line.

Hole 3 – No fairway bunkers with a blind landing area. All 3 bunkers are holding water.3A – Relatively shallow greenside bunker which protects the left side of the green well. Slightly awkward tie-in to green surface and could benefit from more shape to the leading edge.3B – Deeper bunker with plenty of character on external shaping. Protects and frames the approach to the green.3C – A circular, shallow bunker which is somewhat out of character with the front bunkers. Nice externalundulations which could be utilised in some other form.

Hole 15 – No fairway bunkers in play from the tee shot. Three fairway/approach bunkers just short of the green and one greenside bunker.15A, 15B, 15C and 15D – All large and circular in shape with flashed-up sand faces resulting in dificult maintenance, particularly obvious on 15D.

Three greenside bunkers visible from approach.16A and 16B – Both right-side bunkers are well positioned and easily visible from the approach. Both are oval in shape with rounded back edges and sharp lips.16C – The left-side bunker is visible but less so than on the right, the view slightly obstructed by some of the externalundulation.

Hole 7 - Fairway bunker and greenside bunkers are all visible from the tees. 7A – The fairway bunker is large andshallow with a very flat back edge resulting in low visual impact from the tee. It runs perpendicular to the fairway edge, sitting within the rough and as a result does not tie naturally in to the shape of the hole.7B and 7C – Two bunkers run up to the right edge of the green and create a double hazard. Both are circular in shape and could be tied more naturally in to their surrounds which have some interesting undulation.

Hole 10 - A blind drive with no fairway bunkers. The two front greenside bunkers become visible as the golfer arrives over the rise but the back-left bunker is less visible.10A – Not visible on approach. Hidden behind the surrounding undulation. Circular in shape.10B – Well positioned bunker but lacking in character, particularly on the back edge, for what could be a stand-out feature bunker.10C – Well positioned, deep bunker with a sharp lip which protects the front right of the green. The mounding between the sand edge and the green edge is steep and results in an awkward tie-in and exaggerated depth resulting in dificult recovery. There is an opportunity to re-shape this entire area to fit better and resolve some surface drainage issues at the entrance to the green.

Hole 8 – Both bunkers are visible from the tee although the front bunker is more dominantwith a steep sand face and sharp lip.

Hole 14 General comments – A short par 3 with all six bunkers visible from the tees. All bunkers are of similar size and shape with fairly straight back edges resulting in too much uniformity and lack ofcharacter and visual interest. Opportunity to create amemorable, impact par 3.

Hole 18 - There are no fairway bunkers on the 18th hole. The greenside bunkers come in to view as the golfers arrive over the rise.18A – A large bunker with a very steep sand face which is dificult to maintain. The sand area looks out of scale with the surrounds and takes up almost all of the bank which is sits on. The shaping is out of character with anything else on the course. The bunker floor is holding water.18B – An oval bunker which is more in character but is still poorly shaped and tied-in to the green edge and surrounds.

General Note:• There are 57 bunkers on the course, 15 fairway/approach

bunkers and 42 greenside bunkers.

• Front nine has 27 bunkers while the back nine has 30.

• There are fairway bunkers at tee shot distance on 4 holes on

the front 9 and 1 hole on the back. There may be opportunities to

add some fairway bunkers.

• There are generally three different styles on bunker on the

course. The majority are small and oval with rounded back edges

(can lack visual impact). A select few have more varied shape with

either rolled over turf edges or sharp lips. Some of the newer

bunkers are large and oval in shape with severely flashed-up sand

faces.

• Almost all bunkers are visible to some extent but that is often due to

the sharp lips creating height and shadow.8A – An oval bunker with a steep sand face and rounded back edge which protects the entire left side of the green very well.8B – The back edge of this bunker is somewhat lost in the backdrop and doesn’t properly define the right edge of the greenwhich can be visually confusing.

Hole 11 – Par 3 with four well positioned greenside bunkers protecting the left and right sides of the green. All are visible from the tees to varying degrees, with the front left being the most dominant and others merging into their surrounds. All are generally oval in shape with very rounded back edges resulting in a lack of character and visual impact as looking from the tees and as you approach the green. Re-orientation and re-shapingcould help to better define the green surface.

Hole 9 – All bunkers are visible from the tees. 9A – A cross bunker on the left of the fairway isstrategically well positioned with a flat back edge and with a thin line of sand just visible from the tee. There is potential to create a feature bunker complex in this position to give further visual impact to a good par 4. 9B and 9C – Both greenside bunkers are well positioned to protect the green. The right-side bunker is relatively shallow and oval in shape with a rounded back edge. The left-side bunker is deeper with asteep sand face and a straight left edge.

Hole 17 - A short par 3 with bunkers protecting the front left and right of the green.17A – The view to left-side bunker is very slightly obstructed by the tree line. The bunker is oval in shape and ties-in well to the surrounds.17B – The right-side bunker is also oval in shape with a rounded back edge and steep sand flashed face. The bunker ties-in to the surrounds and green edge well but suffers from wear and tear on the surrounds at the bottle-neck trafic route to the18th tee. The bunker is holding water.

• Sharp lips also create playability and maintainability issues.

• A number of greenside bunkers are detached from the green

surface. • Bunker positioning from a strategic point of view is

generally good but with a few opportunities to re-position or re-

orientate to add interest

or improve views.

• Many of the bunkers are holding water following heavy rain

so drainage works are generally required for improved

maintenanceand playability.
