Fruit & Veg Month 2018
Our school has registered for Fruit & Veg Month 2018. The theme
for this year is ‘Happy Fruit & Veg’tember!’
Fruit & Veg Month 2018 runs for the last 4 weeks of Term 3, Monday
3rd to Friday 28th September.
As part of Fruit & Veg Month, students will be involved in various classroom and school
based activities which encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables.
If you require more information on what activities our school is doing for Fruit & Veg
Month, please contact the school or your child’s teacher.
NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee
Well done to the students who have gained selection to represent
Bungendore Public School at the regional finals to be held on
September 10 at North Nowra Public School.
This year, the in-school Spelling Bee was held in the music room which
is a quieter, friendlier and warmer space than the school hall where it
has been held in previous years.
Students from 5F and 3K comprised the audience for the Junior Spelling Bee which was
the first, tightly contested event, with 21 students representing their classes. 4/5B’s
Harrison Bond and Matthew Forman successfully spelt their way to places on the school
team. There was a close tussle for the second spot between Matthew, Seth Fitzgerald
(also in 4/5B) and Charlotte Payne (Year 3).
Students from 5LP then joined the audience when the Senior Spelling Bee was
underway. The Senior Spelling Bee, with 20 students competing, was won by Year 6
students Sam Metham and Miles Bray. Most students were unable to navigate their
way through the 2nd elimination round, however Kaeli Russell from 5F held her own as
the last Year 5 standing until the fourth elimination round when ANECDOTE was her
undoing.
It was then a battle between Sam, Miles, and Eric Moore for the two Stage 3 places.
Sam got through on GUILLOTINE and Miles on LARYNGITIS. Some of the trickier words at
the end were ANTECHINUS, APOCALYPSE, FUGUE, GENEALOGY and MANOEUVRE.
Spelling Bee Club has been held on Thursdays at lunchtime since the NSW Premier’s
Spelling Bee lists were released at the start of May. Spelling Bee wordlists were
circulated to students attending the Thursday spelling club which was run by Ms
Forman (Stage 3) and Ms Knight (Stage 2), as well as to teachers who wished to use the
lists in their classes.

We will once again be holding a number of activities to celebrate Book Week this year.
Our Book Week Activity Day will be held on Thursday 23rd August during the middle
session. Students are allowed to come dressed up on this day as their favourite book
character or as something to do with this year’s theme, “Find Your Treasure”. It does
not have to be a complicated costume; they might just wear normal clothes, as there are
many everyday people in books.
When helping your child/ren to decide on a costume please consider the practicality of
it as it will need to be appropriate for them to wear for school activities and the weather.
We would ask that you also assist us by ensuring that no weapons are brought along as
a part of their costume. I have asked the students to also bring in either the book or a
drawing of the cover of their book as they will be sharing and discussing their characters
with their class.
The activities on this day will begin in the Hall at 12:15pm with a parade for our
students to share their costumes. Parents are more than welcome to attend, however,
please be aware there will be no seating as we will be using the entire Hall. Students will
then split into groups to complete two activities which have been organised, and will be
run by, our Year 6 students. Year 6 have been working very hard on designing these for
the last few weeks and all the activities look like they are going to be great fun!
Design Competition and Activities
This year I have run just one major design competition, which was for students to
design and make a treasure chest which displays at least three of there favourite books.
We have had some amazing chest entered and the mystery judges will certainly have a
difficult time deciding on just one winner in each stage group. Students have also been
voting this week during their library time and it is proving to be a very close
competition. If you get the chance please feel free to call into the Library and have a
look.

Premier’s Reading Challenge.
This year’s NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge
will be finishing on Friday 31st August.
Kindergarten and Stage One teachers have been
reading the PRC books to their classes and will
complete their students’ reading records but
students in Primary need to do this themselves.
We have once again had a fantastic response from our students with more than one
hundred students in the Primary registered so it’s very important that they continue
to log their books onto their Reading Record page. Students have been given time
during Library lessons to do this but they can also access it from home. If you would
like more information about this please feel free to contact me.
Book Fair
We will also be holding another Book
Fair this term. It will run from
Monday 17th September through to
Friday 21st September. More details
will follow closer to the date.
Happy reading everybody

P&C Meeting
We had a guest speaker at our last meeting, Bryce Wilson, the
Executive Councillor from the P&C Federation. Along with bringing
some yummy choc chip biscuits, he provided some guidance to the
new team on some of his experiences and the role the P&C
Federation plays. We have a little homework to investigate a few
items raised, however, it looks like we are on track thanks to our past
P&C members and executive.
Discussions about the fair were in ernst as we finalised some details
and came up with some new ideas! We look forward to hosting a
great event in October.
