Brazil and Cuba remain unbeaten at Pan Am Games GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 25, 2011 – World and Pan American champions Brazil in Pool B and world championship silver medalists Cuba in Pool A remain as the unbeaten teams after two days of action at the Pan American Games men’s volleyball tournament. Both sides scored easy straight-set victories on Tuesday as the competition continued at Avila Camacho Sport Complex in Guadalajara in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Cuba defeated Venezuela (25-20, 25-21, 25-17) while Brazil dispatched Puerto Rico (25-22, 25-14, 25-18). The best two contests of the day were reserved for the night session as Canada prevailed in five sets against USA (21-25, 25-23, 37-39, 35-33, 15-12) in Pool B while Argentina hold off Mexico in the nightcap in Pool A by score of 25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 21-25, 15-10. Brazil v Puerto Rico World and Pan American champions Brazil captured its second victory in as many outings in Pool B by defeating Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-18) on Tuesday. The defeated side dropped to a 0-2 win-loss mark. The winners scored with 13 blocks and 5 service aces against 7 and 2 respectively by Puerto Rico. Brazil’s Luiz Fonteles was the only player in the game who finished with double figures in the score charts with just 10 points. Thiago Alves contributed 9 points to the win while Gustavo Endres and Wallace De Souza each registered 8. Puerto Rico’s Roberto Muñiz charted eight points. Cuba v Venezuela Cuba saw off Venezuela in straight sets (25-20, 25-21, 25-17) to claim its second victory in Pool A. After a close battle for the first two sets Cuba dominated the third with strong defense at the net and powerful spikes. The world championship silver medalists held a 9-1 advantage in the blocking department. Wilfredo Leon was the best Cuban scorer with 13 points, including three blocks, followed by Rolando Cepeda and Henry Bell who tallied 11 apiece. Venezuela’s Kervin Piñerua and Ivan Márquez finished with 13 and 10 points respectively. Canada v United States Canada won a sensational five-set duel against United States to claim its first triumph in Pool B. The match lasted 2 hours and 28 minutes and both teams have now a 1-1 win-loss record. Spencer Leiske of Canada had a match-high 36 points while Tyler Santoni contributed 18 points including 8 blocks. Jacob Kilpatrick and Reid Halpenny notched 11 and 10 respectively. Tony Ciarelli was the best for USA with 29 points followed by Evan Patak, Nicholas Vogel and Eric Vance with 16, 14 and 13 points. Canada won the battle at the net with 22 blocks to 19 of USA and had a 3-0 margin in service aces. Argentina v Mexico Argentina hold off Mexico 3-2 (25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 21-25, 15-10) in Pool A. Both teams have now a 1-1 win-loss record. Pablo Crer was the best Argentinean with 16 points including six blocks and Mariano Guistiniano added 13. Nicolas Bruno, Sebastian Sole and Federico Pereyra each had 10 points. Mexico’s Ivan Contreras topped all the scores with 29 points while Gustavo Meyer and Tomas Aguilera finished with 15 and 12 points.

Ambos equipos se apuntaron triunfos fáciles en tandas seguidas en la continuación del evento en el Complejo deportivo Ávila Camacho de Guadalajara ante una entusiasta multitud. Los dos mejores choques del día se reservaron para la segunda sesión donde Canadá venció a Estados Unidos en cinco parciales (21-25, 25-23, 37-39, 35-33, 15-12) en el Grupo B mientras que en el cierre Argentina detuvo un rebase de México en el Grupo A también en cinco instancias (25-23, 25-23, 25-27, 21-25, 15-10).
