  • Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Happy New Year! May the blessings of these Twelve Days of Christmas continue to bring you the joy discovered in the gifts of faith, hope and love. As the Magi seek out Jesus and do him homage may your celebration of the Epiphany deepen your appreciation of the “manifestation” of God. Emmanuel, God with Us. In today’s Gospel we hear from Matthew's Infancy Narrative, Chapter 2. The gifts of the Magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh—have come to be understood as symbols of Christ’s royalty, divinity, and foreshadows his passion and death. They are special be-cause in giving them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to be for us all - our Savior. I pray that you will acknowledge Jesus as Sav-ior in all that you do and say in the new year. It is important for us to understand history to have an appreciation for the present. Histori-cally several moments in Christ’s early life and ministry have been celebrated as “epiphanies,” including his birth in Bethle-hem, the visit of the Magi, his baptism by John, and his first miracle at Cana. The tradi-tion of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving of the Magi. In many cultures, gifts are not ex-changed at Christmas, but rather on the feast of the Epiphany. As you exchanged your Christmas gifts, did you take some time to reflect on this tradi-tion of gift giving at Christmas? Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it, or the person who gave it to you? I pray that you and your loved ones, espe-cially family and friends that you have not been able to physically see or visit through-out the holiday season, continue to experi-ence the manifestation of God in healthy, smart and holy ways in these Days of Christ-mas and in the New Year.

“As we begin the New Year, may we discover anew that faith demands worship. If we can fall on our knees before Jesus, we will overcome the temptation to set off on our own path.” - Pope Francis, January 6, 2020

Happy New Year! Whatever 2021 brings, I hope you will spend at least part of it with us in-person or Livestream. Mass celebrated daily, Weekend Mass Schedule: 4:00 p.m. Saturday (Vigil for Sunday), 6:00 a.m. Sun-day at St. Boniface Parish and 8:30 a.m. at St. Meinrad Parish. All times are Central Time.

POPE FRANCIS ANNOUNCES “YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH,” GRANTS

SPECIAL INDULGENCES On the solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary Dec. 8, 2020, Pope Francis issued an apostolic let-ter, Patris corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), for the 150th anniversary of the declaration of St. Joseph as patron of the universal Church. To mark the occasion, the pope pro-claimed a year dedicated to Mary’s husband, Joseph, foster father to Jesus. The special “Year of St. Joseph” will be held through Dec. 8, 2021.

In his apostolic letter, Pope Francis explains that the aim of this special year is “to in-crease our love for this great saint, to encour-age us to implore his intercession and to imi-tate his virtues and his zeal,” describing St. Joseph as a “beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accept-ing father; a father who is creatively coura-geous, a working father, a father in the shad-ows.”

Thank you for your continued support of the mission and ministry of our parish family. The year 2020 has been one filled with many obsta-cles which we have recalibrated into opportu-nities. Your steady and intentional financial support has allowed us to continue to move forward in our strategic plan and to complete already scheduled capital projects without compromising our spending policy, tap into savings or to take on any unforeseen debt through this pandemic. As of November 30, 2020, parishes remain debt free. Your use of the tools provided including monthly steward-ship envelopes delivered to your home and online giving options has made all the differ-ence. All gifts needing to be recorded in the calendar year 2020 must be received as soon as possible and dated no later than December 30, 2020.

As you review and finalize your budgeting plans—for spending and stewardship—for 2021 remember, you can make a gift to your parish through your IRA if you are at least age 70½. A qualified charitable distribution from your IRA can take the place of part or all of the minimum distributions you are required to take each year, up to $100,000 annually. There is no charitable deduction, but you will avoid the income tax that you would otherwise pay on the withdrawals. Check with your financial advisor for details. St. Boniface Parish and St. Meinrad Parish both have endowments for your legacy giving and end of life estate plan-ning. I am asking all parish members to review your household budgets making sure that you have not lost sight of your financial steward-ship goal in supporting the mission and minis-try of your parish.

If you need assistance in finding “where you left off before COVID-19” or “what you gifted your parish in 2019”, questions not unfamiliar these days. Please contact Tina Boehm, Fi-nance Coordinator. Tina can easily send you via email or US Post two documents: 1. 2019 Gift Report: 2. 2020 Gift Report January 1 - November 30 so you can complete your stew-ardship goal for 2020 by December 31, 2020.

If you are making use of the on-line giving

program offered, this information can be easily accessed through your giving portal. Thanks to all who continue to remain faithful to the fi-nancial commitment you have to your parish no matter your situation. As a person who be-lieves in and practices tithing at 10% of all my income and gifts received, I too trust in the words that St. Benedict wrote in his Rule in 480 AD about not worrying about the lack of spiritual and material resources. Even though it is common for our human tendency to focus on one’s needs and lacks rather than one’s abun-dance and blessing. We need to remember and trust in what is found in the scriptures, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his justice, and all these things will be given you as well” (Matthew 6:33). There are many ways to give, on behalf of the parishioners who serve as members of your parishes finance council and the members of the pastoral council who serve you, I kindly ask you to do your part.

    Thank you! Happy New Year!
