Follows the pattern

• Israelites 40 years in desert• Elijah 40 days/40 nights in the desert• Holy Spirit “drove” Jesus into the desert– Mark 1:12– Similar to Israelites being “driven” into the desert

Pattern of Temptation

• I John 2:16 – “For everything in the world – the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world.” NIV

• “because all the things of the world – the desires of the old nature, the desires of the eyes, and the pretensions of life – are not from the Father but from the world.” Jewish Bible

Page 7: Temptation & Talmidim

1st Adam

• Genesis 3:6– “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree

was good for food – desires of the old nature– And pleasing to the eye – desires of the eyes– And also desirable for gaining wisdom –

pretensions of life– She took some and ate it. She also gave some to

her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”• They failed

Page 8: Temptation & Talmidim

2nd Adam

• Devil follows temptation pattern– “tell this stone to become bread.” – desires of old

nature– “led him up to a high place and showed him” –

desires of the eyes– “throw yourself down from here” – pretentions of

life• Jesus passed• He quotes from lessons Israelites had to learn in

their desert experience
