FROM THE PASTOR…

May Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the path to everlas ng life, be with you! Alleluia! Jesus Christ has risen today! We hear the power of the love Christ showed us on the Cross in the words of the "Exsultet," the Easter Proclama-

on. Because of Jesus, this event "dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy, casts out hatred, brings us peace and humbles earthly pride." Because of Jesus' love, mer-cy and sacrifice, we have a share in everlas ng life with our Lord. As I write this, I feel grateful and humbled by the faith and good works of the people of the Communi-

es of Mission San Luis Rey Parish. Thanks to the hard work of Mary Dorso, Araceli Gonzalez and their RCIA Teams and Larry LaGrasta and Elena Zavala, 4 adults and 26 children/young people were bap zed during the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil and welcomed into our family of faith. More than 250 families were given a wonderful basket of food for Easter and treats for the children thanks to your dona ons, well spent by Carmen Parra and her Social Concerns Department. Thanks to Laura Chun and her team of Youth Ministers, 61 young men and women made their confirma on retreat at Green Oaks Ranch a few weeks ago. Many people par cipated in the op-portunity for Reconcilia on and forgiveness at our Communal Reconcilia on services. Hundreds of min-istry leaders from every group in the parish helped make the Mul cultural Sta ons of the Cross a reali-ty. Our Art and Environment team led by Linda Cau-see created countless liturgical environments in the Mission Church, Serra Center and Parish Chap-el. Under the guidance of Lupe Rios, our choirs and musicians offered us all music that was both invi ng and prayerful. Thanks to more ministries and groups than I can recount here, what a beau ful and spir-itual Lenten season we celebrated together. I'd like to give a special thanks to my fellow priests: Fr. Adri-an, Fr. Luis and Fr. Arturo for all they have done, al-so my Franciscan Community at the Mission and the staffs of both the Parish and Old Mission. Their faith and devo on, commitment to the Catholic Faith and to the people of San Luis Rey are an inspira on for me.

PILGRIMAGE TO ROME AND ASSISI APRIL 6 –16, 2015

There was such a demand for places on the October Parish Pilgrimage that we have decided to run another pilgrim-age to Rome and the Franciscan holy places in April 2015. We have a wai ng list of interested parishioners and oth-ers who were unable to secure a place on the 2014 trip. If you are interested in coming with us in April 2015 please contact Wendy Brophy at: 858-756-4174 x1702 or [email protected] ~~Fr. Adrian – Pilgrimage Leader

So what happens next? I'd like to invite the peo-ple of God to take a deep breath and enjoy the pres-ence of God manifest in their lives. Together, let us turn to the example of St. Francis of Assisi, and with joy, make this pe on to our God.

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy Peace! Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is discord, harmony.

Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light.

Where there is sorrow, joy.

Oh Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive;

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

May the peace of Christ con nue to reign in your hearts and bless your families during this Easter sea-son.

Peace,

Fr. David

FR. ADRIAN’S CORNER

Christ is Risen! He is Risen indeed! This is how the Chris ans in the East greet one another on Easter Sunday morning. It is a gree ng filled with joy and hope because Christ is risen from the tomb and has conquered sin and death forever. As we celebrate His victory let us remember all who hope and long for peace in our world, especially the people of Syr-ia: the refugees, the families of the dead and all who innocently suffer in the face of the evils of war, hatred and racial or religious discrimina-

on. May we who proclaim the victory of Christ at Easter be His instruments of peace wherever there is division, calling the world to reconcilia-

on and harmony which is our natural state and is of God. Our Confirma on Retreat held just before Easter at Green Oaks Ranch in Vista for 61 teens was a great success. Thank you to all the teach-ers and Youth Leaders who made it such a spe-cial event for our young people preparing for the Sacrament of Confirma on which takes place in the Parish on June 3 at 6:00 pm. On be-half of everyone associated with the Confirma-

on Program I would like to offer a special word of thanks to Laura Chun for her hard work and oversight, to Vince Nims who gave the reflec-

ons and to the friars who came to hear confes-sions on Saturday evening during a moving cele-bra on of the Sacrament of Reconcilia on. Please pray for our young people as they ap-proach their confirma on in the faith. We have had many beau ful and moving litur-gies and other prayer events in the parish in Ho-ly Week and at Easter. A highlight was the Out-door Sta ons of the Cross. It is one of those

mes when the whole parish in all its diversity comes together to walk with the Lord on the road to Calvary. It was the Franciscans who made this Way of the Cross popular for people who could not visit the Holy Land to walk where Jesus Himself walked on the famous Via Doloro-sa in Jerusalem. The Parish Outdoor Way of the Cross finished in the Serra Center with the plac-ing of Jesus in the tomb by the Samoan Commu-nity. It was a moving and wonderful celebra on.

Thanks to Fr. Luis and his team for pu ng it to-gether. Congratula ons to all our new members of the Church, those who were bap zed at the Easter Vigil and all who received the Sacraments of Confirma-

on and First Communion! Thanks to all our liturgi-cal ministers, AV ministry, choirs and musicians, and to the Environment Ministry for the beau ful dis-plays in our various liturgical spaces. In his Le er to the Church en tled “The Joy of the Gospel” the Holy Father, Pope Francis writes:

I invite all Chris ans, everywhere, at this very mo-ment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus

Christ, or at least an openness to le ng him en-counter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly

each day. No one should think that this invita on is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.” The Lord does

not disappoint those who take this risk; whenever we take a step towards Jesus, we come to realize that he is already there, wai ng for us with open

arms. Now is the me to say to Jesus; “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to re-

new my covenant with you. I need you. Save me once again, Lord, take me once more into your re-

deeming embrace.” How good it feels to come back to him whenever we are lost! Let me say this once more: God never res of forgiving us; we are the

ones who re of seeking his mercy. Christ, who told us to forgive one another “seventy mes sev-

en” (Mt 18:22) has given us his example: he has forgiven us seventy mes seven. Time and me

again he bears us on his shoulders. No one can strip us of the dignity bestowed upon us by this bound-less and unfailing love. With a tenderness which

never disappoints, but is always capable of restor-ing our joy, he makes it possible for us to li up our

heads and to start anew. Let us not flee from the resurrec on of Jesus, let us never give up, come

what will. May nothing inspire more than his life, which impels us onwards!

May that Joy which the Risen Lord brings be yours this Easter and always! Fr. Adrian.

Oh, Maestro, haced que yo no busque tanto ser consolado, sino consolar;

Porque es dando, que se recibe; perdonando, que se es perdonado;

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Lenten journey is now complete, its mission of renewal and prepara on to receive new life ful-filled. The call to worship the Risen Lord has been received, and we gather to experience together the consoling presence of Christ in word and sac-rament. We are at our best today, crowded and cramped to be sure, but the fullest sign of who were are meant to be. Christ has claimed us in the waters of bap sm, we have acquired wonderful companions, and together we can accomplish great things. This is the day for rekindling the old flames of bap smal commitment, so we light the paschal candle, and by its light we make yet again the an-cient promises to reject evil’s grip and empty promises. Today we do not recite the Creed, but respond with one voice to age-old ques ons. New life has to be nurtured, both the life of the newly bap zed and the renewed life of those who have passed through Lent’s refining prayer, fas ng, and giving alms. At any Mass during the next fi y

days, you may be surprised by grace and splashed by water!! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
