BGC Contracting awarded two BHP contracts

Corporate

BGC Contracting has recently been awarded two contracts to revamp BHP’s operations in Newman, Western Australia.

The first contract is for a major refurbishment at BHP’s Coondewanna airport. The scope of work includes resurfacing the runway, taxiway and apron lights, and the replacement and upgrade of the precision approach path indicator (PAPI) system.

A separate contract to expand maintenance facilities for the Jimblebar mine site will support an increase in the mine’s fleet capacity.

BGC Contracting CEO Greg Heylen said these wins were further evidence of the company’s success at broadening into infrastructure projects.

“We are delighted to be expanding our relationship with BHP at a time when confidence is returning to the West Australian resources sector,” Greg said.

The main airport works are expected to be completed by the end of 2017, while site work on the workshop expansion is due to finish in March 2019.

BGC Precast has contributed its expertise to a significant Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc) project exploring the ways manufacturing innovation can be implemented within the building sector to create high-quality, cost-effective developments with reduced environment impacts.

The project also explores barriers to finance as a key issue impacting the acceleration of offsite building manufacture and adoption of innovative construction methods.

For more information or to view a video on the research project visit: http://sbenrc.com.au/research-programs/1-42-innovative-industrialised-buildings-performance-verification-and-overcoming-barriers-to-financing/

“Financing on building sites is lagging behind the innovation and technology that you see in factories such as ours,” BGC Precast Business Development Manager Phil Surridge said.

BGC Asphalt - Contract win gives BGC Asphalt key NorthLink WA role

BGC Construction - New accommodation provides opportunity for independent living in regional town

BGC Precast - Bringing manufacturing innovation to the workplace

BGC Asphalt is set to play a key role in the delivery of Stage 2 of the NorthLink WA project, providing an estimated 700,000 tonnes of asphalt over two years to progress this strategic transport link.

BGC Asphalt was awarded the contract forStage2–thebiggestasphaltproject of its kind in Australia – following a stringent selection process by the project’s main contractor, Great Northern Connect, which is a joint venturebetweenLaingO’RourkeandBGC Contracting.

The company won the project based on its ability to deliver on time, and with the strictest quality control.

The strength of the larger BGC Group of companies also proved key, and will see the use of BGC Asphalt, BGC Quarries, BGC Transport, BGC Cement, BGC Precast, BGC Contracting and Brikmakers in working on the project.

BGCQuarriesproducessome1.5milliontonnes of crushed aggregate a year, which will supply materials for the project. BGC Cement and Brikmakers will supply lime, while BGC Transport will deliver the raw materials.

BGC Precast is also producing 13 kilometres of precast noisewalls for the project, employing conventional methodstogetherwithanewstate-of-the-artbatterymoldimportedfromItaly, which contributes to a more time andcost-efficientproductionprocess.

The two-year contract will see BGC Asphalt utilise three new asphalt plants, four asphalt crews, 660,000 tonnes of raw materials and 30,000 tonnes of bitumen.

The contract continued BGC’s contributiontotheNorthLinkproject, which will halve journey times between MorleyandEllenbrookandeliminatesome of WA’s most dangerous intersections.

The opening of three new Independent Living Units at the Pemberton Aged Accommodation (PAC) village will help elderly residents in the regional Western Australian town to maintain their independence.

The units, which were primarily funded by Royalties for Regions and built by BGC Construction, were officially opened on 20 October by the Hon Terry Redman MLA, Member for Warren-Blackwood, the Hon Adele Farina MLC, Member for the South West, and PAC Chairman Gordon Smith.

BGC Construction Regional Manager Ross Marshall said the new units were an extension of the existing village and an important addition for the local community.

“The significance of this project may be lost on some, but for the elderly residents of this remote town, the new Independent Living Units provide an opportunity to continue to live independently in the location of their choice,” Ross said.

BGC Construction won the contract through a competitive tender process, and has also completed site works for the future development of six more units.

“BGC Construction has a proud history of building aged care accommodation across Western Australia and we’re delighted to be involved in this project, which will support greater social engagement for ageing community members in Pemberton,” Ross said.

BGC Precast - Water tank strengthens ties

The BGC Group has cemented its continued relationship with the Water Corporation by securing a fifth contract for water tank roof refurbishment works, most recently for the Yule Water Tank in Port Hedland.

BGC Contracting was awarded the contract to build a precast concrete roof to replace the old roof on the ground water storage tank. Following significant research and development by BGC Precast, fabrication of the tank roof was completed using precast columns and beams, as well as innovative hollowcore concrete roof panel technology, all fabricated at BGC Precast’s Naval Base

facility – one of only two facilities in Western Australia able to complete this type of fabrication.

The roof components were then transported1,667kilometrestosite,where they were assembled by BGC Contracting.

Ongoing collaboration and innovation between the BGC divisions has resulted in the successful completion of similar watertankprojectsatDerby,Neerabup,BeverleyandDenham.

Following the Neerabup project, Water CorporationProjectManagerScottJohnson said smart design concepts had optimised working time and reduced site assembly risks.

“BGC introduced smart design concepts which shortened construction by four weeks, and made the site safer by reducing the amount of time employees needed to work at heights,” Scott said.
