    3OPINION

    JULY 2-8, 2013

I DID not come tocall the righteous butsinners. (Mt 1,13) Tatsquite clear. Christ came tosave all men. Tats whatsalways in his mind. Whilenot neglecting anyone, hehowever gives some spe-cial attention to the sick, the weak, the sinners.

Its an attitude that weshould also have. We can-not think that we can justget contented with lovinga ew people, or even alot, but not all. We have tolove everyone i we wantto be consistent with ourChristian identity. Weeven have to love our en-emies, as Christ himselcommanded us.

Love has a univer-sal scope. And its givenwithout measure. We cannever say enough o it.Tese are truths that weneed to chew on slow-ly and deliberately, ormany are the elementsin us and around us thatwould tend to underminethem.

We always have preer-ences and biases. We havepet peeves. We are alwayssubject to certain condi-tionings, cultural, social, political, that somehowput limits in our concernor the others.

Tese are naturalthings that are unavoid-able. But it doesnt meanthat we just get stuckthere. We have to go be-yond them, or abovethem. And we can do thatbecause our spiritual na-ture and the grace o Godallow us to go beyondthese conditionings.

It would be good toacknowledge as clearlyand as strongly as possi-ble these conditionings, but we should also asclearly and as strongly dosomething so that we cango beyond them. Insoaras Gods grace is con-cerned, it will never belacking. What is neededis our generous corre-spondence to this grace.

Tus, we need toconsciously sharpenour charity, using all themeansmaterial, hu-man, spiritual, supernat-uralto make it refectand act out Gods veryown love. Rememberthat Christ himsel gaveus the new command-ment, which serves as thesummarizing and perectcommandments, to loveour neighbour as he lovesus.

And how does he loveus? Aside rom creatingus and endowing us withthe best o thingswehave been created in hisimage and likeness and, with his grace, adoptedchildren o hishe has

    [email protected]

Sharpening our charitygiven us his mercy in re-turn to our disobedienceand sinulness, a mercyhe acted out by oeringhis lie on the cross.

Tats the supreme acto love, or Christ him-sel said that No manhas greater love than hewho lays down his or hisriends. (Jn 15,13) Andthat love abides, becausethat lie-oering kind olove is made a sacramentthat he himsel com-manded us to renew tillthe end o time.

How important there-ore that we be theologi-cal in our attitude towardthis duty. We cannot relysimply on our emotionsand other external actorsand conditionings. Nei-ther can depend solelyon our own will. We haveto have the orce o gracethat made available in thedoctrine o our aith andin the sacraments.

We need to be moreserious with our duty tolove. We have to make itmore specic, more di-rect, more rened, moreenduring. It has to bemore and more universal.

Yes, we do it in stages, going through the stageso eros, lia and agape, and starting with thoseclose to us and radiatingto ever widening circleso people, but we justhave to be persevering init, even i it suers vari-ation o pace and even iit strays rom its properpath rom time to time.

What can help is toassume a pro-active at-titude toward this dutyto love. We should notwait or some inspira-tion, nor or the others toprove that they deserveour love. We have to lovethem a priori, and all theway, putting more im-pulses to make that lovealways active. We need toreinorce it with an end-less supply o theologicalmotives.

Imagine how the worldwould be i we just put ourmind and heart toward thisduty to love, which actuallysummarizes all our dutiesand responsibilities towardeverybody.

We need to overcomethat primitive thinking thatbeing serious with char-ity would make us soand mushy and all that.Te contrary is true. Lovewould make us strong asit demands us nothing lessthan willingness to be pa-tient and tolerant, to su-er, to orgive, to reconcile,to step on our own ego, thelogic o our fesh and thealse values o the world. Itsnot araid o death.

    Lets always sharpen ourcharity.

Farmers across the country had stuck totheir primitive methods not so much ortheir resistance to scientic arming butdue to lack o support or the shi. Tey

had been tilling our rice elds that ed the na-tional breadbasket on a per capita consump-tion o our growing population. Teir seeds hadevolved through continuous breakthrough inrice research where our country is host to theprestigious International Rice Research Insti-tute that is based in UP Los Baos, Laguna.

But the emergence o new rice varieties thatare designed or high yield could not ully sprouton rice elds that lack supply o water. Te ricevarieties are high yield in a shorter period otime but or lack o water in most parts o thecountry, rice production could not be maxi-mized. Our armers had lived with the promiseo adequate water to their rice elds in order tosustain the target number o cropping per year.

Unortunately, or lack o adequate water, the new varieties could not be planted as oen.Farmers are lured into trying the new varietiesthat require arm inputs and chemicals or it toattain its maximum yield. But apart rom thearm inputs in the orm o ertilizers and othersynthetic products, the armers need water toensure that their palay will grow to the ullest. Our armers had held to the promise o armsupport through irrigation that could make

possible the optimum cropping every year.So much volume o rain causes damage to our

rice elds and crops as we ail to manage our wa-ter resources and mitigate its adverse efects onour agriculture. Excess water during rainy sea-sons could eed our rice elds but or lack o ir-rigation system, we continue to sufer in our riceproduction, causing our country to resort to im-portation. Tis, because most o our armers arestill gazing at the clouds waiting or the rain.
