EDITORIALBUITEMS has stepped into the 10th year of its life. The objective of establishing BUITEMS wasto provide quality education in disciplines which are relevant to the demands of the twenty firstcentury. With the establishment of this University, modern educational facilities were madeavailable to the youth of Balochistan, at their own door-steps. They were provided opportunitiesto equip themselves with knowledge and confidence of facing and handling the challenges ofpractical / professional life.

During first nine years, BUITEMS has maintained steady growth in physical facilities, humanresources, laboratories and equipment, programs of study and the number of students enrolled.From a modest start in a single-building, the University has now assumed the status of asprawling conglomeration of three campuses , accommodating faculties, hostels, playgrounds,expo-center, model research farms, conference halls, CMS systems, library and many otherfacilities. The faculty strength has gone beyond 350, while the student body beyond 5000. Ouralumni are our ambassadors to the professional organizations across the country as well asoverseas. They have proved their worth competently and are shouldering their responsibilitiesin various professional spheres with confidence.

The University has been focusing continuously on quality research; both at the level of facultyand students; consequently the results have been highly gratifying. The sizeable number ofresearch articles recently published in reputed national and international journals and booksspeak of the intellectual prowess and industry of our research teams. Almost a dozen of ouryoung faculty members won Fulbright scholarships by dint of their remarkable performance inthe tests held for selection of talented scholars. Moreover our students, frequently proved theirmettle in academic, co-curricular and extra- curricular contests nationally by winning trophiesand notching up top prizes in debates and declamation contests.

This institution is playing vital role in grooming its students in order to make them productivemembers of the community. BUITEMS’ Quarterly Newsletter and Annual Reports signify theoutstanding accomplishments of the faculty and the students in every sphere of the campus life.BUITEMS has marched into the 10th year of its existence with the assurance that the well-oiledwheels of this machinery will keep on rolling on to distinctive achievements and enviableaccomplishments.

National Engineering RoboticsContest (NERC-2011)

National Engineering Robotics Contest was heldat National University of Science andTechnology (NUST), Islamabad from July 2 toJuly 7, 2011.

A group of students, comprising ZeeshanAhmed, Zaheer Ahmed, Qazi Junaid and ZohairAashique from the department of ComputerEngineering, BUITEMS presented a roboticproject in the contest.

An unmanned programmed vehicle capable ofloading blocks and moving them to the desiredslot shown in the arena marked as a colored slotwas presented under the project ‘QZZZ’. It wascapable of performing the assigned taskrepeatedly. The color and white line followersensors were also installed to guide the robotto find the path in case some hurdles proppedup in its normal path.

The Robot designed by the BUITEMS’ studentswas highly appreciated by the panel of expertsand officials of NUST. ‘QZZZ’ was presented atthe National Robo League 2011 held at FAST-NUCES Karachi from September 30 andOctober 1, 2011.

BUITEMS Talent Hunt 2011 (InterDepartmental Song Competition)

Directorate of Student Affairs BUITEMSorganized the BUITEMS Mega Talent Hunt2011. As a part of the program, a SongCompetition was held at Green Hall TakatuCampus on July 4, 2011. More than 25 studentspursuing studies in different programs of studyparticipated in the event.

A Bodybuilding Championship washeld from 26th to 28th of July 2011at Taji Khan Complex AlamdarRoad Quetta under the auspicesof Bodybuilding AssociationBalochistan. Mr. MuzaffarChangazai (BodybuildingAssociation Member) was theChief Guest of the event. MrAdnan, a BS (BA) student fromBUITEMS took first position in theheaviest weight class, while he won secondposition in the over-all body building competition.Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Masood Kasi,the University Sports Director said thatsportsmen are valuable asset of the nation andBUITEMS would continue to encourage theirtraining and development.

The Chairperson of Tanzim-e-Idara-e-Bahali-e-Mustaheqeen, along with two other members ofthe (T.I.B.M) Quetta distributed ration among105 low-paid employees of BalochistanUniversity of Information Technology,Engineering and Management Sciences(BUITEMS) under their Ramzan PackageProgram on 22nd August, 2011.

Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai and the Pro Vice ChancellorBUITEMS Prof. Dr. M. A. K. Malghani were alsopresent on the occasion. The Vice Chancellorthanked the Chairperson T.I.B.M, Mrs. SurayaAlladin and the members of the T.I.B.M for theirgenerous gesture.

He appreciated the humanitarian services ofT.I.B.M and hoped that they would continuesupporting the needy and helping the lessfortunate in the community. He mentioned thatthe contribution of T.I.B.M would not gounrecognized. He wished T.I.B.M continuedsuccess in their social activities and publicservice endeavors.

Professional Training Program forNewly Appointed FacultyReported by:Ms. Fakhira Ramzan

The Directorate of Human ResourceDevelopment organized a two weekProfessional Training Program from September15 to October 05, 2011 for newly appointedFaculty Teaching Staff in the Training Hall,Takatu Campus. The training was attended by64 teaching staff from the Faculty ofEngineering, Faculty of Information &Communication Technology, Faculty ofManagement Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences& Informatics and Faculty of Arts & BasicSciences, BUITEMS.

Honourable Vice Chancellor, Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai, was the chief guest at theopening ceremony. The program started withrecitation of verses from the Holy Quran. Ms.Fakhra Ramzan, Deputy Director HumanResource Development briefed the participantson the aims and objectives of the program. Shestated that the faculty teaching staff are beingtrained under the guidelines of modulesprovided by HEC, Islamabad and BUITEMS.

She hoped that the participants would benefitfrom the training and its impact would bereflected in the classroom environment. Prof.Dr. Malghani, Pro Vice Chancellor, in his speechreiterated that the purpose of the training wasto equip the young faculty with professional skills

which will help them throughout theirprofessional careers.

Vice Chancellor, in his address to the teachers,advised them to participate actively, taking fulladvantage of the opportunity. He stated thatmany other training programs would also beconducted. He hoped that the training wouldequip them with professional teachingtechniques.

The closing ceremony was held on October 05,2011. Vice Chancellor, Engr. Ahmed FarooqBazai, was the Chief Guest. Pro- ViceChancellor, the Deans, the Controller ofExaminations, the Directors, AdditionalRegistrar, the resource persons and theparticipants of the training program were presenton the occasion.

The ceremony started with the recitation ofverses from the Holy Quran. Professor BarkatAli, Director HRD, briefly high-lighted theactivities completed in the training program. Heappreciated the efforts of Ms. Fakhra Ramzan,Deputy Director HRD and support staff inmaking the program a success.

The Vice Chancellor appreciated the efforts oforganizers for holding the training program andhoped that the participants would implement theskills learnt by them during the training in theirprofessional life. He also awarded certificatesto the trainees.

World Space Week, 2011 Held atBUITEMS

BUITEMS and SUPARCO organized the “WorldSpace Week” event from October 10-11, 2011at Takatu Campus, BUITEMS. The objective ofthe event was to create awareness among thestudents regarding space applications andspace studies being carried out in Pakistan.

Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai was the chief guest at the eventwhile Mr. Imran Iqbal Member SUPARCO wasalso present on the occasion. The chief guestaccompanied by SUPARCO Memberinaugurated the event in which students fromdifferent schools of Quetta city participated.

Various competitions, including Water RocketCompetition, Debate Competition, PosterCompetition and, Quiz Competition were held.Mr. Imran Iqbal briefed the students on theimportance of space technologies and seekmore knowledge from the modern technologyadvancement. He emphasized BUITEMS’valuable contribution in the province andappreciated her efforts in the propagation ofeducation in the fields of Science andTechnology.

Ms. Alishba from Garrison Academy, QuettaCantt. got the first position, while Imran Khanand Zohaib from Wilderness School clinchedthe second and third positions in the contest.

At the closing ceremony, Chief Guest Engr.Ahmad Farooq Bazai, while talking to the

students, teachers, media representatives andother officials, highlighted the relations betweenBUITEMS and SUPARCO and acknowledgedwith gratitude the efforts of SUPARCO inPakistan.

BUITEMS 7th InterdepartmentalBasketball Championship 2011

The 7th Interdepartmental BasketballChampionship was played from 10th to 13th

October 2011 at Takatu Campus basketballcourt. Eight departments of the University tookpart in the event. All matches were played onknock out basis.

Teams from BSBA, BS (Petroleum & GasEngineering), BS (Electronic Engineering) andBS (Computer Engineering) qualified to play thesemi-finals, after tough competitions in thequalifying round.

Semi-Finals:The first semi-final was played on 12th October,2011 between BS (Petroleum & GasEngineering) and BSBA. The match was aspirited display of agility and enthusiasm.BS (Petroleum & Gas Engineering) sailed intothe final by beating the BSBA team by 21-17.

The second semi-final was played between BS(Electronic Engineering) and BS (ComputerEngineering). BSCE won the match by 26-8 andqualified to play the final.

Final:On 13th October 2011, the final match of the 7th

interdepartmental basketball championship wasplayed between BS (Petroleum & GasEngineering) and BS (Computer Engineering).In the beginning of the match BS (P&G) held astrong grip on the match and scored 18 pointsin the first half. In the second half BS (CE) madea brilliant comeback and stopped the scoringspree of BS (P&G). The match was extremelyclose till the last 5 minutes when the AdnanAfridi & Waqas of BS (P&G) played marvelouslyand clinched victory for BS (P&G), beating theopponents by 29-23 points. The championshiptrophy was awarded to them.

Chief Executive, Pakistan Poverty AlleviationFund, Qazi Azmat Essa called on ViceChancellor BUITEMS on 11th October, 2011 ona good will visit to the University. He was givena briefing on the history and salient services ofBUITEMS by the Vice Chancellor, Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai. The briefing was held in theVideo-Conferencing hall of the Takatu Campuswhere Pro. Vice Chancellor, Dr. M.A.KMalghani, Deans of faculties, Directors andmany other faculty members were present.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that povertyalleviation can be ensured through thepromotion of education. The new generationneeds to be well-equipped with scientific andtechnical knowledge. Grooming of thecharacters of the students has to be an integralpart of their education, so that they can servehumanity to the best of their capabilities.

Qazi Azmat Essa expressed his appreciationsover the physical facilities, high class instruction,congenial and disciplined atmosphereprevailing on the campus. He remarked that hisvisit of BUITEMS has assured him about thebright future of the youth of Balochistan.BUITEMS has rapidly grown into a remarkableinstitution that guarantees quality andexcellence in education. Majority of the peoplein Pakistan are living below the poverty line andit is imperative that technical skills are impartedto the youth, so that they may live with dignityand happiness.

Interdepartmental T-20 CricketTournament 2011 BUITEMS

The 7th Interdepartmental T-20 cricketTournament 2011 was held at Takatu CricketGround from 12th October to 31st October 2011.Member of the Sports Committee, Mr. AbdulQadeem Kakar inaugurated the tournament. Inhis opening address he said that the sports playimportant role in grooming and reforming theyouth.

In the opening matches twenty two departmentalteams participated, out of which eight qualifiedfor the quarter finals. After tough competition inthe quarter final, BS (CE), BS (Min.E), BS (Eco.)and BS (P&G.E) qualified for the semifinals ofInterdepartmental T-20 Cricket Tournament.The first semifinal was played on 29th ofOctober between BS (CE) and BS (Mining). BS(CE) won the match by four wickets. Akramshowed excellent performance as a bowler andgot three wickets. The second semifinal wasplayed between BS (Eco.) and BS (P&G.E). Thematch was won by BS (P&G.E). Mr. NajeebKhan played a superb innings as an all rounder.He scored 50 runs and got two wickets.

The final match of the T-20 InterdepartmentalTournament was played between BS (P&G.E)and BS (CE) on 31st of October 2011. Battingfirst, BS (CE) set the target of 175 runs for their

rivals. Playing well and sensibly BS (P&G.E)batsmen chased the target in 19.2 overs. Isrardid magnificent batting by scoring 65 runs andNajeeb showed his prowess as a bowler. Hegot three wickets. Israr and Najeeb shared theMan of the Match honors of the final match.

Najeeb Khan of BS (P&G.E) was declared bestplayer of the tournament.

Administration and Faculty T-20 CricketMatchesMatches between faculty and administrationwere also played during the T-20Interdepartmental Cricket tournament. Eightteams from both sides participated in thecontest. The semifinals were played on 22ndof October. The first semifinal was playedbetween Faculty of Takatu Campus andAdministration of Takatu campus.Administration of Takatu Campus won thematch by four wickets. Mr.Imran got the Man of

the Match award. The second semifinal wasplayed between Administration of Takatu andFaculty of City Campus. Faculty of City Campuswon the match by 50 runs. Mr.Jamal Achakzaiwas declared Man of Match for scoring 54 runs.

The Final Match was played between Faculty ofCity Campus and Administration of TakatuCampus. Administration of Takatu campus wonthe Match by four wickets. Mr. Jahanzeb wasdeclared Man of the Match. He scored 50 runs.

With the increase in students’ strength, theUniversity also increased its servicesreciprocally. One such move was the purchaseof two new buses.

On October 17, 2011, Vice Chancellor Engr.Ahmed Farooq Bazai inaugurated the additionof buses in the existing fleet and handed overthe keys to Mr.Farhan Ahmed Baig, AssistantTransport Officer.

He exhorted the students to pay whole-heartedattention to their studies and get benefit fromthe available facilities. He declared that morebuses would be purchased during the nextfinancial year. The Pro Vice Chancellor,Registrar and other prominent members of theadministrative staff of BUITEMS also witnessedthe ceremony.

On 18th October 2011 the Vice ChancellorEngr. Ahmed Farooq Bazai inaugurated thenewly established computer lab, designed tocater the needs of the students of the Faculty ofManagement Sciences. New computers havebeen installed in the lab with the latest software.This lab is a significant addition to the facilitiesalready available to the faculty and students atthe City Campus.

World Osteoporosis DayCommemorated

Pakistan Osteoporosis Society Balochistan incollaboration with International OsteoporosisFoundation organized a one day seminar onOsteoporosis on 20th October 2011, at QuettaSerena. Large number of students fromuniversities & colleges, heads of manyinstitutions, including many doctors, mediarepresentatives and notable members of societyparticipated.

Dr. M.A.K Malghani, Dr. Azam Kakar, Dr.Nazeer Ahmed and Mr. Sameen khan, StudentAffairs Coordinator along with a delegation of20 MS students from the Faculty of LifeSciences and 15 BS students from otherfaculties of BUITEMS actively participated in theSeminar.

A group comprising 17 high ranking federal andprovincial officers from the NationalManagement College, Lahore visited BUITEMSon Oct; 26, 2011. Mr. Sher Afgan and Mr.TahaHussain Bugti coordinated the tour.

On their visit to the Takatu Campus, the groupwas shown various laboratories and academicfacilities, CMS and Data Center, Libraries,Seminar Halls and the Expo Center.

Vice Chancellor, Engr. Ahmed Farooq Bazaigave a detailed briefing on the history andfunctions of the University.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mr. TahaHussain Bugti, thanked the Vice Chancellor andhis colleagues for giving the group theopportunity of seeing history being made beforetheir own eyes.

Vice Chancellor, Engr. Ahmed Farooq Bazaipresented the University shield to the groupleader as a memoir of their visit.

National Workshop: Strategies forImprovement in Livestock

A national workshop was organized onNovember 19, 2011 at UVAS, Lahore toanalyze the current situation of animalreproduction and to define and proposestrategies for improvement in the livestockreproduction in the country.

Dr. Muhammad Azam Kakar, then Dean,Faculty of Life Sciences and Informaticsparticipated in the said workshop and chairedthe session on “Artificial InseminationTechnicians Training and Record Keeping”. Inthe general body meeting Dr. Kakar waselected as Vice President of the Society for thenext three years. The general body also chosefour scientists including Dr. Muhammad AzamKakar from all over the country as member‘think tank’ for future research and developmentin the field of animal reproduction.

Chairman Pak-China Institute visitsBUITEMS

Ex. Senator Mr. Mushahid Hussain Syed,Chairman Pak-China Institute Visited BUITEMSon 23rd of November, 2011. He was welcomedby Engr Ahmed Farooq Bazai. Mr. Hussain andVice Chancellor exchanged good wishes anddiscussed the prospects of expanding the rangeof academic programs at BUITEMS. Later theyarrived at Video-Conferencing hall where otherprominent members of the Universityadministration and faculties were present.

The Vice Chancellor introduced Ex. Senator andchairman, Pak-China Institute to his colleagues.He was shown a documentary on the salientfeatures of BUITEMS, after which the ViceChancellor highlighted the academic growth andphysical infra-structure of the institution.

Mr. Mushahid Hussain Syed narrated hisjourney from a student to a journalist and thento a media man. He told that Dr. Javed R.Leghari urged him to visit BUITEMS and seehow competently an engineer was undertakingacademic of university development.

He appreciated the emergence of positivedynamism in the country as new institutions likemedia, judiciary, civil society, youth and NGO’swere gaining ground against stagnation in thepolitical system. He saw prospects of global

change in the revolt against corruption seen inArab and African countries. His experiences inbuilding up friendly ties between Pakistan andChina gave him much insight into the nature ofpowers of change. He concluded his addresswith the promise of speaking for BUITEMS inIslamabad as it deserves all the support.

The University shield was presented to Mr.Mushahid Hussain as a memento of his visit toBUITEMS.

SEMINAR on “Institution Building”Reported by: Mohammad Shah Khan

Mr. Amjad Rashid led a delegation of Non-government Organizations (NGS’s) on their visitto BUITEMS on December 8, 2011. Thedelegates were taken around the TakatuCampus where they were shown differentlaboratories including Video-Conferencingroom, Data Center and seminar halls of theUniversity. Later on, a seminar was held on thetopic of “Institution Building” in which all thedelegates from NGO’s, many interestedUniversity teachers, students and members ofthe administrative staff participated.

Opening the seminar, Engr. Ahmed FarooqBazai, Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, emphasizedthe importance of building institutions,

particularly educational institutions, as thesehave to build the Society and the Nation. ‘It takescenturies to build a university and the reputeduniversities in the world have very long historiesof their existence. Their alumni today run theaffairs of important institutions’. He stated thatthe rapid rise of BUITEMS as a university hasbeen very impressive, but it is yet to go a longway. Faculty and the students are working veryhard and harmoniously for the achievement ofBUITEMS goals. The University is serving forthe benefit of the students from the underpreviliged sectors in the country. BUITEMS hasintroduced a number of programs for financialassistance of needy but capable students andfurther ways and means are being explored toextend the scope of assistance. It is the duty ofthe educational institutions to analyze andcontemplate on issues of national importanceand to suggest their practicable solutions.

Addressing the seminar Mr. Amjad Rashidexpressed his firm belief that sincere anddevoted efforts are bound to translate hopes intorealities. He exhorted the NGO’s to have closerrelations and contacts with the educationalinstitutions in order to ensure promotion ofquality education.

At the end of the seminar, representatives fromNGO’s thanked the Vice Chancellor for hisaddress and for affording them the opportunityof seeing a model institution in the province.

12th Meeting of the AdvancedStudies and Research BoardReported by: Niaz Mohammad Kakar

BUITEMS Advanced Studies and ResearchBoard held its 12th meeting under thechairmanship of Vice Chancellor, Engr. AhmedFarooq Bazai, on December 9, 2011. Pro ViceChancellor BUITEMS Dr. M.A.K Malghani,Deans of faculties and heads of variousacademic departments attended the meeting.Various agenda items submitted to the Boardby faculties were discussed and approved bythe Board.

Vice Chancellor, Engr. Ahmed Farooq Bazai,speaking on the occasion, emphasized the needfor holding the meetings regularly and carefulreview of agenda items by the faculties. Hepointed out that research is the fundamentalfunction of universities and such avenues ofresearch need to be explored which yieldproductive and useful results for the society.We cannot afford to compromise on quality ofresearch and productivity, he said .The meetingended with a vote thanks for the chair.

Study tour of BS (IT) Students toIslamabad

The Study tour of BS (IT) students led by twofaculty members namely Mr. Ahthsham Sajidand Mr. Mazhar Ali, was undertaken from 14th

to 23rd December, 2011. The objective of thetour mainly was to expose the students toacademic setting and learning opportunitiesavailable at different IT Organizations andUniversities, to introduce them to otheruniversities, IT solution providing organizationsand give them chance to interact with studentsand professionals of different universities /organizations. The group visited a number ofacademic and research institutions inIslamabad. Notable among these wereCOMSATS, Quaid e Azam University,SZABIST, IBM, PTCL, and Elixir Technologies.Students were also provided opportunity byCOMSATS Islamabad to attend an InternationalConference on the “Frontier of InformationTechnology”.

Symposium on Human Rights atBUITEMS

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan(HRCP) in collaboration with BUITEMSorganized a one day symposium on “HumanRights” at Takatu Campus BUITEMS onDecember 20, 2011. The audience on theoccasion included University students, faculty

members, and staff from various departmentsof the University.

Opening the proceedings of the symposium, Mr.Tahir Hussain (advocate), Vice Chairperson ofHRCP, delivered a speech on Human RightsManifesto and Educational, Political, and SocialRights of females. Mr. I.A. Rehman, SecretaryGeneral, HRCP gave his scholarly views onPeace and Human Rights. He was of the opinionthat students at university level could playimportant role for the protection and promotionof their own rights, the children’s rights, thewomen’s rights, the social and cultural rights.He also focused on the importance of peace inthe light of the United Nation’s Charter. Mr.Aziz-ud-Din (Lecturer Psychology, UoB) gave atalk on “Tolerance”.

Mr. Rahat Malik (Citizens Rights Pakistan) gavehis presentation on Citizens Rights and HumanRights in Pakistan in detail.

At the end of the symposium, Prof. Dr. M. A. KMalghani, Pro Vice Chancellor BUITEMS, whowas the Chief Guest of the symposium, sharedhis views regarding Human Rights. He thankedthe HRCP for holding the symposium andensured them of BUITEMS’ cooperation andsupport in their future endeavors.

Youth X-Po Quetta at BUITEMSReported By: Syed Shah Muhammad

Youth X-Po Quetta was jointly organized byBUITEMS, Organization for Development ofYouth (ODY) and School of Leadership (SoL),Karachi at BUITEMS ,Takatu campus onDecember 24-25, 2011 under the theme of‘Exploring Possibilities’.

Around 200 youth from different universities andcolleges participated in the event and mentorsfrom different organizations shared their viewsand knowledge with the group.

On the first day of the event, Mr. Kamran Rizvi-a well known trainer and cofounder of SoL, gavehis precious views on the topic “NOW, THEFUTURE”. He focused on Self confidence andYouth Leadership and inspired youth with hisenergetic ideas. Dr. Ghulam Rasool, a wellknown psychiatrist and psychologist, gave hisimpressive presentation on “Leadership in

Community Development”. Ms. Faiza Meer,Assistant Professor International RelationsDepartment at University of Balochistan (UOB),Quetta spoke on “Build and Manage MeaningfulRelations”. She stressed on the importance ofrelationships in our daily lives.

On the second day of the event Mr. UmairJaliawala, Chief Turning Officer at Torque gavehis presentation on “TAKE CHARGE OF NOW”.Mr. Mohammad Shah Khan, Deputy DirectorUniversity Advancement and FinancialAssistance, BUITEMS gave a detailedpresentation on “Career Development”. Paneldiscussion on “Career Guidance” with HRProfessional was also a part of the event andthe panelists were:
