    BUILDING PATHWAYS TO RESILIENCY

  • 2 | The Parmenter Foundation 2017 Annual Report2 | The Parmenter Foundation 2019 Annual Report

Never did Tom and I dream that we would be sending you The Parmenter Foundation’s 2019 Annual Report in the midst of a world pandemic crisis as a result of COVID-19. This reminder of how unforeseen circumstances can change our world instantly is sobering, creating additional needs for the most vulnerable in our MetroWest communities. The Foundation is currently assessing those needs and how our organization can be a catalyst for HOPE.

During 2019, The Parmenter Foundation focused our charitable giving in three areas and awarded more than $350,000 in grants, with the goal of identifying innovative and compelling opportunities that improve the health and well-being of our community:

    • Healthcare and Hospice Services including grantees such as the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence, MetroWest Free Medical Program and Behavioral Partners of MetroWest

    • Children’s Programs including grantees such as Camp Erin® Boston, HEARTplaysm

    and Camp Casco

    • Community Support including grantees such as the Parmenter Food Pantry, Family Promise Metrowest and Why Me, Inc.

The Parmenter Foundation relies solely on private support, and we are so grateful to our donors who continued their giving as well as new donors who came on board during 2019. You inspire all who are involved with this organization! Without your support, we simply cannot sustain all our programs and initiatives. Be assured that 100% of all donations received are earmarked for grants to MetroWest nonprofi t organizations that deliver high quality programs with a strong volunteer component.

Despite the current crisis, The Parmenter Foundation looks forward to the coming year to focus on executing our mission, growing our community of support, initiating innovative programming that answers community needs as well as inspiring volunteerism all around us. Be safe, be well and be assured that lessons will be learned from COVID-19 that will benefi t all of us.

The Parmenter Foundation seeks to empower MetroWest residents coping with serious

illness, end of life or hardship to build pathways to resiliency. We

do so by identifying, funding and partnering with trusted

nonprofi ts to deliver programs that improve the health of our

    neighbors and community.

On November 15, 2018, the fi rst Children’s Care Packs were ready to be gifted to children visiting a loved one at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence in Wayland. Since that time, over 55 care packs fi lled with age-appropriate grief guidebooks, toys, message writing materials and other items to help children express their feelings have been distributed. Gail-Ann Simon, the Children’s Care Pack creator, is a longtime hospice and children’s bereavement volunteer. She has given careful thought to ensure that the care packs provide the right balance of comfort, guidance and diversion during a diffi cult time. To support this children’s grief project, Gail-Ann’s three children started the Children’s Care Pack fund at The Parmenter Foundation. Please join us in providing a measure of comfort to grieving young people by giving to the Children’s Care Pack Fund at www.parmenterfoundation.org/donate.

In 2019, we seized the opportunity to fund two new inspiring programs that support children diagnosed with cancer and their families. 15,780 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year. Childhood cancer can abruptly end childhood by stealing the carefree moments like soccer games, dance recitals and time with friends; replacing them instead with chemotherapy, surgery and endless medical appointments. Camp Casco recognizes the overwhelming physical and psychosocial impact on children diagnosed with cancer and provides a camp for them and their families at no cost. Camp Casco sought funding to provide year-round support to its campers and their families. Also supporting families with a childhood cancer diagnosis, Why Me, Inc. provides families with continuous support from the time of their child’s pediatric cancer diagnosis through recovery and sometimes loss. Why Me, Inc. sought funding for its Circle of Healing Bereavement Retreat for parents whose child(ren) have passed away from cancer.

Camp Casco provides children with a camp experience focused on reducing anxiety, improving self-image, increasing independence and building social skills. Off ering both a free weeklong day camp in Wellesley, MA and a free weeklong overnight camp in Yarmouth Port, MA for children ages fi ve to seventeen, Camp Casco had 46 campers last summer and has served children from all over New England for the past fi ve years.

“The struggle with childhood cancer doesn’t end when treatment does, and families of survivors will continue to cope with the long-term challenges cancer creates. It’s so important that children who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families have the opportunity to create bonds with others who have been through similar experiences, creating peer support networks,” emphasizes Erin Fletcher Stern, Chief Executive Offi cer, Camp Casco. “By funding our camps, The Parmenter Foundation provides a much-needed resource for childhood cancer survivors - emotional support for the long haul.”

Why Me, Inc. located in Worcester, MA off ers families with a child diagnosed with cancer lasting, tangible support services through all stages of their child’s cancer journey including diagnosis, active treatment, maintenance, remission and bereavement. “Our goal is to stand beside our families throughout each of their journeys and work to maintain balance and restore harmony in every life we touch,” states David Hagan, Executive Director and father of three sons, one of whom passed away from cancer. The Circle of Healing Bereavement Retreat is vital because it allows parents to

explore their grief experience more fully without having to hold back. It gives parents the opportunity to learn, share, support and heal with one another. “The power of a shared common experience transcends superfi cial diff erences and creates lasting bonds of friendship. Parents continue to fi nd this experience uniquely helpful in their bereavement journey,” adds Hagan.

We are thrilled to partner with programs that are there for our neighbors during their times of need and continue to help them build resiliency for the future. Welcome aboard!

    NEW GRANTEE PROGRAMS IN 2019

    OUR GRANT RECIPIENTS IN ACTION

The grassroots community-based programs that we support are making MetroWest a better place to live, work and play. Below is a snapshot of each of our high-impact grantee programs from 2019. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

A HEARTplay participant takes part in an expressive arts project. HEARTplay groups use movement, music, art, and play to help

participants honor their person and process the many feelings associated with grief.

For each Tuesday healthcare clinic, volunteers set up privacy spaces for nurses, doctors and translators to meet

with patients at the MetroWest Free Medical Program.

A Camper and her Big Buddy pose together at Camp Erin Boston 2019. Every camper at Camp Erin Boston has a

“Big Buddy” – trained volunteers who serve as one-to-one mentors for campers during the camp weekend.

At Behavioral Health Partners of MetroWest, a care coordinator speaks with a caller, listens to their

concerns, and connects them to services that are tailored to fi t their unique needs.

The Dora Efthim Healing Garden is a natural and serene garden for Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice

Residence patients and their families to fi nd peace and hope.

The Parmenter Food Pantry shines during the holidays with community members donating gifts

and volunteers distributing gifts and food for familiesin December. Sue Kwan, a food pantry volunteer,

    is surrounded by donated gifts.

Each holiday season a special angel tree is placed at Sherry’s House.  This tree holds a

personalized gold ribbon for each Why Me child who has passed away from pediatric cancer.

Family Promise Metrowest celebrates the opening of its fi rst aff ordable, transitional living house,

which will now be home to two single mothers and their children. Both mothers are enrolled in higher

education programs – a critical component of FPM’s transitional living program.

The Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice Residence remembers each patient who has passed by displaying their name and lighting a candle in

their memory. The light is a reminder to patients, families and staff that providing care

for hospice patients is an honor.

    TheParmenterFoundation

In this unprecedented and diffi cult time of COVID-19, we have responded to the needs of our grantees and grassroots community programs that serve our MetroWest neighbors. These programs are in need of fi nancial help as many of their annual fundraisers providing their base funding have been canceled and the demand for their programs have increased. To do our part, we have granted $30,000 in COVID-19 Crisis Funding to six nonprofi t organizations. The awarded organizations provide high quality specialized programs that assist individuals and familiesin times of crisis and help to build strength and resiliency. The programs for which we have provided funding are:

    • MetroWest Free Medical Program ~ supporting the purchase of a telehealth program so they can continue to serve their un/underinsured patients while their healthcare clinics are closed;

    • Open Table ~ supporting a drive-through food pantry and mobile food delivery to meet the needs of the most vulnerable residents in thirteen MetroWest towns;
