L’Shalom, Rabbi Joshua Neely [email protected] • Mobile: 321.279.5315 Office Hours: Tuesday-Friday & Sunday • Please call or email for an appointment
We are now in the month of Elul, the precursor to the Yamim Noraim, Days of
Awe. This is a time of self-reflection and self-judgment. The Talmud says an indi-
vidual should view him or herself hanging in a scale. On one side my merits, on the other my failings. After
our best, honest appraisal of our deeds we should admit our biases and default to a belief that I am perfectly
balanced. Therefore, the next action we take will decide whether I am righteous or wicked. This forces us to
think of each action as significant in our spiritual journey.
If every individual is in balance, the Talmud argues, then the world is in perfect balance too. If you see or
hear of an act of hate, violence, suffering, exploitation then you know the world is out of balance – it has
tipped towards evil. You are therefore obligated to redeem the world by performing an act of goodness to
balance it out. Simply refraining from evil is not enough. We must be a force for positive change.
Donate: You can donate to organizations like the Anti-Defamation League, Holocaust Museum, Southern
Poverty Law Center, Simon Wiesenthal Center and more. Organizations that promote non-violent responses
to hate and educational programs to prevent hate make a big difference. Through activism and lobbying
they have already moved us forward.
Attend: Peaceful rallies, interfaith and interracial community events, educational seminars, cultural festivals
– these are all ways of knitting together our American community and keep it from being torn apart.
Speak Out: Support is good, but being a vocal, personal proponent of a diverse country is one task that can-
not be delegated. Let your friends, neighbors, coworkers and others know you believe no one in this world
should be hated for the color of their skin, the nation they come from, or any superficial quality.
Condemn: Petitions and posts are a good start but be prepared to call hate hate, racism racism, fascism fas-
cism. We must protect free speech but that includes our right to condemn that which is abhorrent to the
very nature of God’s world. Remember the truth of the first chapter of Torah – all of humanity was made in
the image of God.

To our Temple Israel Family,
The High Holidays are upon us, and it is hard to believe that my tenure as President of Temple Israel will come
to a close soon. It has been an honor to serve, and I have met so many wonderful people in our Congrega-
tional Family. I want to personally wish all of you a healthy and happy New Year, from my family to yours.
Our facility continues to be improved. Our son, Steven, Bar Mitzvah from 2014 at TI, completed a successful
Eagle Scout Project in our field. Take a look at the newly built fire pit and benches, through the hard work of
many volunteers and generous donations. Our Art studio is in use, thanks to the Marlene Davis Art Fund, with
generosity from Elliott. We also completed one major roof replacement, with donation from Harriet Lake and
our very own Sisterhood. We also saw our Roth Social Hall flooring removed with new installation of a floor-
ing material that is better-suited to our use. Thank you to the Roth family for your continued generosity and
kindness.
Have you ever seen so much programming at TI? SAK comedy night was awesome, and Sha-Ba-BQ was so
well-attended that we were overflowing with congregants and visitors checking us out. We also have contin-
ued with very inspirational services both Friday nights and Saturday mornings, so I would encourage you to
pop over for some Vitamin J. Our leadership is actively looking to further enhance our services with music
and song, so stay tuned. If you have any ideas for programming, let our office know. Our goal is to have a
program for everyone. With that said, ultimately, you need to come on by to immerse yourself in the pro-
grams. I believe you will enjoy.
Membership committee is working hard to bring folks over and we continue to see new families joining Tem-
ple Israel. When you consider some Shuls in our area without a Rabbi, without services for High Holidays, and
without a facility, we are doing just fine. We will continue working hard to keep Temple Israel alive for our
kids, grandkids, and future Central Florida Jews.
Until we see each other again.

Hello friends and family,
We were so happy to see so many smiling faces on our first day of school – lots of famil-
iar ones as well as many new ones! The first day began with a lovely breakfast for the
parents provided by Temple Israel’s awesome membership committee (thank you Michelle Gil and Carol Al-
bert!) as well as Temple Shir Shalom’s Membership Committee. After breakfast, Rabbi Neely and Cantor Kim
welcomed the parents in the sanctuary and gave an overview of the year to come. Then Shari Wladis from the
Jewish Community Relations Council gave a presentation to the parents on how to effectively advocate for
your Jewish child in the public school system. The first day closed with parents helping their children with an
art project (wait until you see the mural!) followed by our usual kehillah time for everyone in the sanctuary
which included learning about Jewish communities all over the world.
We are excited to have some new family MAGAL events on our calendar this year and hope that you’ll be able
to join in. Our first one is a Family Honey Cake Bake after school on Sunday, September 10th so you and your
family can practice together and get ready for your special Rosh Hashanah dinner. Later in the year MAGAL
families will come together to make candles, enjoy a Hanukkah party, and bake hamantaschen cookies.
Friday, September 15th is the first religious school Shabbat of the year. Also, Temple Israel’s Membership Com-
mittee is having a Shabbat Sh-Aloha dinner on Friday, September 8th before services – be sure to sign up early.

Greetings everyone,
This month, I want to focus on our wonderful group of kitchen coordinators managed
today by Linda Silverman (chief food shopper, chef, “the boss”) and Phyllis Kamenoff
who schedules weekly hosts for shopping, food preparation and serving. This project falls under the auspices
of Sisterhood and each participating person is responsible for providing the congregation with a delicious Kid-
dush luncheon each Shabbat. Anyone who knows me is well aware that I do not go near any kitchen unless it’s
a dire emergency. So it’s difficult for me to understand the commitment and dedication these women (and one
male) have about making certain that each week there is plenty of food for all of us.
Everyone works in the Temple Israel kitchen, even the children, in one capacity or another. It’s hard work done
willingly because we all know everyone will get to taste the fruit of our labors. However, most importantly, the
sense of community that is fostered via kitchen work is priceless. It’s done in groups of two or three people at
a time. There are almost always stories to go with each recipe, and this is one way the women of Sisterhood
become “sisters.” Now, I can’t swear there are never any ribald jokes floating around the food preparation
site. But it becomes quite obvious that a recipe is about more than just food. A recipe for food can become a
recipe for life. The basic ingredients are the same: love, laughter and a pinch of sass.
A million thanks are due our kitchen corps. When you are at services, please take the time to thank them indi-
vidually.

Thank you! Natan Brener Ritual Chairman
Tashlich – Come Cast Your Sins Away
It is customary on the first day of Rosh Hashanah to go to a running body of water in the afternoon. There, a
short ceremony is observed which symbolizes the casting away of our sins into the depths of the ocean. The
ceremony concludes with throwing bread into the water, which has the added benefit of feeding the critters
living there and starting off the new year with the mitzvah of showing kindness to God’s creations.
Please join us for a *Tashlich service Thursday, September 21 at 6:00 pm. We will meet at the entrance of the
synagogue and walk to the lake at Torcaso Park together. Please be sure to come with an ample supply of
bread. *The Tashlich service is open to the entire community.
Community Memorial Service – Kever Avot
Sunday, September 24 - 10:00 am - Temple Israel Cemetery
Please join us at Temple Israel cemetery for our annual community memorial service. Members of the
congregation will be invited to stand at the graveside of their deceased loved ones, and Rabbi Joshua Neely
will recite individual memorial prayers in their honor.
A BIG THANK YOU!
to Judi Chisdes, Sima Feldberg, & Geanne Share for polishing all our silver and Torah crowns in time for the High Holidays.
You help make services that much brighter!

A Unique Neila
By the end of Yom Kippur Day, most of us are pretty tired. The last service for Yom
Kippur is called Neila, the closing of the gates of prayer. To make matters even a
little more difficult, the doors of the ark are kept open during the entire service,
which means that the congregation is expected to stand for almost an hour (Of
course, those who can’t stand are permitted to sit during the lesser prayers).
We encourage you to make every effort to be at this service. Unlike 99% of
synagogues around the world, we call up everyone present in the sanctuary
(regardless of religion) to come up with family and friends to spend some
moments in front of the ark for their own private prayers.
Participating oneself, and watching others standing before the Torah scrolls with
their dear ones, expressing love and affection for each other, makes for a very
moving experience which makes the conclusion of the entire day really special and
inspiring.
If you missed this service last year, find someone who attended and they will tell
you the very same thing you just read. We hope to see you there.
Yom Kippur Community Memorial Service
On Yom Kippur Day, Saturday, September 30, starting at 5:00 pm, High Holiday services at Temple Israel will
be open to the community (no tickets required) beginning with the afternoon prayer service of Mincha. All
prayer services will be held in the main sanctuary.
Following Mincha at 6:20 pm will be a community memorial service, at which time all are invited to remem-
ber in prayer loved ones who are no longer with us. This service will also recall those who have perished
throughout the ages.
Neila follows at approximately 6:45 pm which is the final service before the proverbial gates are closed. At
Temple Israel, this is a very special time where families/friends, one group at a time, are invited to come to
the bimah where the ark will remain open to allow everyone to experience the awe of standing before the
Holy Ark and Torahs. This can move us to reflect on our blessings and challenges and resolve to move for-
ward in the new year with God’s help.
Maariv is scheduled for 7:40 pm followed by Havdalah and the final Shofar blast at 8:00 p.m. at which time
the fast is over. Temple Israel’s Sisterhood will, once again, provide its annual Break the Fast in the Roth So-
cial Hall. All members of the community are cordially invited to join the Temple Israel family at this highly-
anticipated event.

Sukkot Lulav & Etrog Sets
Another beautiful symbol connected with Sukkot is the lulav & etrog set. The set includes
the graceful palm branch, the etrog (which is a cousin of the lemon - but much sweeter),
willow branches, and myrtle branches. These plants are native to Israel and remind us of
harvest time there.
By the way, did you know the celebration of Thanksgiving comes directly from the holiday
of Sukkot? The Pilgrims took our Torah very seriously and when they read that they were
supposed to rejoice with God’s bounty, they celebrated what came to be the Thanksgiving holiday. There’s
another contribution by the Jews to Western culture – one of many! It is customary to use the lulav & etrog
during Sukkot services to enhance the beauty of the service and to bring the atmosphere of Israel into the
sanctuary.
We are looking for at least 10 families to purchase lulav & etrog sets at a cost of $48 per set. If you purchase
a set, you may take it home during the holiday & keep it after the holiday. If you are interested in purchasing
a set, order them online at tiflorida.org/2017-lulav-etrog/. You can also call the office at 407.647.3055.
