As the New Year begins, our thoughts inevitably turn

to those with whom we shared previous years, those

who shaped us into the people we are today. In

our Yizkor prayers we affirm, by remembering them,

that they are still a living influence on our lives, and

we pray that our lives in the coming year reflect

what they taught us.

A PRAYER FOR THOSE NOT SAYING YIZKOR FOR PARENTS

From the Mahzor of the Jewish Community of South Africa

Almighty God, while those who have lost their parents and their

dear ones call to mind those who have gone to their eternal rest, I at

this solemn moment raise my eyes unto You, the Giver of Life, and

from a grateful heart thank You for having preserved the life of my

beloved father and mother.

May It be Your will, ADONAI my God and the God of my ancestors,

to bless them with health and strength so that they may be with me

for many years to come. Bless them even as they have blessed me,

and guard them as they have guarded me.

In return for all their affection and the sacrifices they have made for

me, may I bring them joy and lighten their cares. May it be my

privilege to help them in every way that lies within my power. May I

learn to understand and recognize the duty I owe unto them, that I

may never have cause to reproach myself when it is too late.

Shield my home from sorrow. May peace and harmony and Your

spirit ever reign within its walls. Keep me true to You and to all with

whom I come in contact so that I may do Your will with a perfect

heart. AMEN

IN MEMORY OF A BROTHER OR SISTER:

May God remember the soul of ______, who has gone to his\her

eternal home. With great love and affection I recall the years in which

we played together and competed, conspired and fought, loved each

other and stood by each others side as we shared life together as

PRAYER FOR OUR FALLEN TROOPS

Eternal and Compassionate God whose mercies fill the earth, at this

sacred time of remembrance our thoughts turn to all the men and

women of the Armed Forces of the United States who have given their

lives in the defense of freedom for all people. Keep these pure souls,

who shine brightly throughout Your creation, sheltered firmly beneath

Your wings. May the memory of their lives serve as an inspiration to

us and as a comfort to all their loved ones. May they rest in peace

among all the righteous of our people. And let us say, Amen.

YAHRZEIT CANDLES

On Erev Yom Kippur, it is customary to light a memorial lamp for

deceased family members. The memorial lamps must be lit before the

holiday candles are lit. Yahrzeit candles are available in most

supermarkets.

Although no bracha (blessing) is required, you might wish to recite the

following meditation:

O God, I pray that you will keep the soul of my dear _________

united with us in the bond of life. In his/her memory, guide me so that

I will live righteously, fulfilling Your will and serving our people. May

his/her soul rest in peace and be remembered as a blessing.

PERMANENT MEMORIAL PLAQUES

When loved ones die, we strive to keep their memory alive. It has

been a hallowed tradition throughout the ages to do this through the

recitation of the Kaddish, and by honoring the individual’s memory

with charitable deeds done in his/her name. Remembering the name of

our loved one is particularly important, as our tradition teaches that

one’s name symbolizes the individual’s distinctive being and essence.

As you think about ways to remember your loved ones, please

consider having their names inscribed on memorial plaques in our

synagogue sanctuary. This is a wonderful way of performing an act of

Tzedakah—charity—at the same time you are perpetuating your loved

one’s name and memory.
