The fast ends at 7:22 PM on Saturday, 04 OCT 2014. Sukkot, called “the time of our joy” in the prayers, follows Yom Kippur by five days, starting at sunset on Wednesday, 08 OCT 2014. Three times the Torah tells us to be happy and rejoice on Sukkot. King Solomon dedicated the Temple on Sukkot. Chanukah celebrated the rededication of the Temple with the lulav and etrog, as the Jews could not observe Sukkot earlier in the year. Shemini Atzeret immediately follows Sukkot. The Eighth day of Assembly, though directly connected to Sukkot, remains an independent holiday. We observe yizkor and prayers for rain on the first day. The second day (in the diaspora) coincides with Simchat Torah, when we complete the Torah cycle and start anew. We conduct these services at 9:30 AM and 7:00 PM on Thursday, 16 OCT 2014 in the KBH sanctuary. For Simchat Torah, we ask members to bring kosher sweets/snacks to help celebrate hakafot as we parade the Torah through the sanctuary. We set the temperature throughout the building at 72°F during the holiday services. A complete holiday schedule follows the end of the Newsletter. Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH), also known as Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, supports the Jewish Family Service (JFS) food closet throughout the year. This year, in lieu of flowers, we decorated our bima with “Baskets of Hope” to support the JFS Food and Financial Assistance program. Please, on Yom Kippur, bring in non-perishable food and household items to support JFS food distribution efforts. The KBH Sisterhood sponsors children’s services on Yom Kippur day. You may leave young children unable to sit for long periods with a babysitter in our building. We ask members to construct the Sukkah at 10:00 AM on Sunday, 05 OCT 2014. We also need help in eating lunch in the Sukkah on 11 OCT 2014 and storing if for the year at 10:00 AM on Sunday, 19 OCT 2014. Chabad of Tidewater, 1920 Colley Avenue in Norfolk, VA, hosts Cookie in the Sukkie, a family events featuring a kid friendly dinner, cookie decorating, and using the lulav and etrog on Thursday, 09 OCT 2014 from 5:00 – 6:30 PM. Free, but please RSVP to [email protected] or (757) 616-0770.

Taglit offers a free trip to Israel for Jewish participants between 18 and 26 who finished high school before departure. Individuals remain eligible if they have not visited Israel for more than 3 months since the age of 12 or participated as part of a touring group, educational/study/residential program since the age of 18. $250 deposit returned upon the trip’s completion. 11th and 12th grade students may submit applications for the 2014-15 Jewish Teen leadership Program through 03 OCT 2014. Students meet monthly to understand the role every individual plays in supporting our locality. Applicants must commit to 25 community service hours in a local Jewish agency over the school year.
