Adding value with additional savings. With a remit to deliver up to €1.7 billion to the City of Amsterdam over a 10-year contract period, Egis started its parking service operation in January 2016.

Jan Lukkien, IT manager at Egis Parking Services, says: “We needed a stable IT platform because we run a virtually 24/7 operation, scanning about 40 million licence plates a year.”

BT was already engaged, but that didn’t make it an automatic choice. Against other suppliers, it was able to show the BT Compute hosting platform in Amsterdam was easily up to the task. Meanwhile a BT professional services team developed innovative ways to save, like reducing non-critical data backup frequencies to achieve a 35 per cent cut in costs.

BT Compute is a very stable platform. The hosting is extremely reliable.

With its digital parking system, one thing you won’t spot on the streets of Amsterdam is a traffic warden or a parking ticket. Parking permits are issued online, and offenders are caught on camera by mobile patrols in cars or on scooters or cycles.

Originally managed through a city-owned entity, with BT providing professional services together with data centre and network services, Amsterdam was keen to get greater efficiency by outsourcing the operation. The bid winner was French engineering group, Egis. An IT service provider reselection process run by Egis, resulted in the reappointment of BT.

Carlo Barten, chief executive of Egis Parking Services, says: “I was impressed by the attitude of the BT team. You need to be able to trust people, and the way the negotiation was conducted was open and positive.”

Safe hands offer comprehensive IT services.BT provides IT to Egis Parking Services, from data centre and backup to network connections and managed firewalls.

At the solution’s heart are four BT-owned and maintained Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) B-Series blade server clusters running on Cisco Nexus 9000 switches. They support around 100 virtual machines in a VMware environment running databases, directories and other apps.

Leonard Knijff, business development manager with BT in the Netherlands, says: “The tailored solution we’ve build for Egis is extremely reliable; we haven’t experienced a single outage since its implementation. This blueprint provides a solid foundation for future growth and will help Egis market its end-to-end parking solution to other cities in The Netherlands, and elsewhere around the globe.”

A full-time BT employee provides professional services including consultancy, operating system and application support, and software patch management. BT also runs a 1Gbps managed link between the data centre and the Egis headquarters.

How digital parking works in Amsterdam. Thanks to digital technology, traffic wardens in Amsterdam don’t have to stalk the sidewalks. They don’t even have to look out for illegally-parked cars. Instead, they ride vehicles with SCANaCAR systems from ScanAuto, which monitor parked cars, taking up to 800 digital images a second.

The digital images are encrypted and sent to Egis for analysis. Jan Lukkien explains: “Using the BT infrastructure, our software looks up the licence plate on Egis and government databases to check if the owner has the correct parking permit for the zone the vehicle is in.”

If not, the system sends a fine automatically by surface mail to the owner’s address. There’s no delay and no stress.
