From Janet Hi Everyone,
I am so sorry not to get this written last week. It was just one of those weeks where so much
was going on that it makes my head spin just thinking about it. We had visitors from New
Zealand and locally come to look at BEPS, regional meetings and much more. However, the
last two weeks have been very productive and I want to take the time this week to tell you
about some of the things that are going on and celebrate our successes.
Child Safety As you know BEPS is committed to child safety. In the wake of the Betrayal of Trust findings I
want to reiterate to you that we as a community want children to be safe, happy and
empowered. We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers. There is
zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very
seriously and consistently. We already have policies and processes in place to protect the
care, safety and welfare of children. However, we have now reviewed, strengthened and in
some case written policies and procedures to ensure that we meet our legal and moral
obligations to contact authorities when we are worried about a child’s safety and ensure a
zero tolerance approach to child abuse We will follow these rigorously. As policies are ratified
at school council, they will be made available to you through the newsletter and on our web
page.
BEPS is committed to preventing child abuse and identifying risks early, and removing and
reducing these risks. We have robust human resources and recruitment practices for all staff
and volunteers. We are committed to the cultural safety of Aboriginal children, the cultural
safety of children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, and to providing a
safe environment for children with a disability. Brunswick East Primary School has specific
policies, procedures and training in places that support our leadership team, staff and
volunteers to achieve these commitments.
There will be clear boundaries about how adults in our school community may interact with
the children here, set out in our school’s Child Safe Code of Conduct. This will be made
available when school council ratifies it at school council.
The child safe standards apply to all school staff (including volunteers and contractors),
visitors and students’ family members.
Keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility.
I want you to know that all unsupervised contractors and instrumental music teachers have a
Working With Children check as a condition of working with us and all parents/guardians who
go on excursions are required to have a WWC check. Can I please remind all parents who
come in and help in the LCs that we also require you to get a WWW check, bring it in to
school so that we can keep a copy. You can apply on line at
http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/ and remember that it is free for volunteers.
Additional help We all know that the world is a beautiful place that is full of adventure and fun, but it can also
be quite messy and scary sometimes. Childhood can be a difficult and challenging time for
some students. There are so many experiences to navigate and sooooo much to learn.
Numeracy and Literacy are just 2 areas in which we need to learn. However, there are
numerous social and emotional skills we need to navigate and learn.
BEPS is in the fortunate position of being able to offer extra support, in addition to our Ed Psyc
(Peter) and Speech Therapist (Charmaine), to help students deal with these challenges and if
necessary linking them to specialist staff.
BEPS is lucky to have Kim, a Masters of Counselling student at Monash University, with
us at the moment. Kim holds a Bachelors of Psychology from Melbourne University and
is a certified Applied Behaviour Analysis therapist with Autism Behavioural Intervention
Australia.
Kim will be working with 123 students to help them in developing their social skills
through Play Therapy, Music Therapy and Art Therapy.
onPsych services offers services to students and their families at school, at no cost,
under the GP Health Plan. This service utilises qualified professionals and will entitle the
student/family member to a maximum of 10 sessions per year with the psychologist/
social worker. If you have concerns about your child’s anxiety, behaviour, depression,
stress, managing anger……… onPsych offers individual or group skills training sessions.
Please contact your LC teachers or myself and we will inform you how to contact
onPsych as soon as possible.
Student Attitude to School Survey
The results of this survey have come back and it is really pleasing to see the improvement
in all area of student attitudes, particularly in the areas of:
school safety - BEPS is at the 93rd percentile. This means that according to our
students we are in the top 10% for student safety for all schools in Victoria (State,
Independent and Catholic). This is a fantastic improvement and I thank the staff
for their commitment to making BEPS a safe school, to the Junior School Council
for their work at assemblies and to the students for their improved behaviour and
care of others in the yard.
student motivation and engaging teaching – which we attribute to our
improvement in digital learning and the Tinker Lab.
Maths Talent Quest
Well the results have come back and they are outstanding! We all need to celebrate the
success of all our Mathematicians and the fantastic effort they put in to their MTQ projects
and the tremendous results the groups have achieved. It will now be a difficult decision as to
how to get so many students to the award ceremony. Please read the news from Bicicletta
below.
NAPLAN results are here and again show good results for student’s numeracy and literacy.
We had a fantastic participation rate.
Please remember that you need to pick up the results for your child only. If you want your
child to pick up the results then please write a note allowing them to pick it up.
Remember if you have any questions about the results please ask and above all remember
that they are one result on one day.
Janet
A friendly Reminder: Thankyou to all families for handing in the concert rehearsal forms:
There are still some outstanding so please return to school with payment
as soon as possible:
Thankyou

Bicicletta’s Big News
We have some exciting news for today…
“Maths games. Maths puzzles. Everything maths.”
In today’s news we will be talking about MTQ.
There has been some outstanding news in the Australian Maths Talent Quest competition.
There’s a lot of maths in the world but where to look?
There’s a disease of competitive action spreading across public schools full of math and
prizes.
The MTQ or as schools know it Maths Talent Quest is a contest of design and creativity and
math talents. This has spread over Brunswick East with the scores of encouragement, credit,
distinction and high distinction. As we venture into Brunswick East Primary 15 games have
been made…
If you don’t know what MTQ is then this is the thing for you to read…
OK well, MTQ stands for Maths Talent Quest. MTQ is where schools enter a big or small maths
project. You have to create maths things or answer a big maths question.
We had about 12 weeks to do it. You then have to send your project off to the Maths
Association of Victoria to be tested. After a few weeks they come back and tell you your
results and give you feedback on your work.
Now you know what MTQ is, lets talk about what we did…
“What we did was make a game with as much maths as we could put in it and we put a lot
of maths in it.”
“We did it to improve on our maths.”
“In Bicicletta we have been doing MTQ
The fun thing is we did cool maths games.
There were 15 games.”
Our MTQ was making games.
We played some games ourselves. We then made a game all together.
That game making was so fun.
Then we made our own games using maths to make boards and characters and cards.
We made powerpoints to explain how we did everything.
It was mostly (obviously) in Bicicletta and not so obviously in the library. Because in term 2 the
library became the tinker lab - a highly advanced centre for BEPS.
Bicicletta started with some brainstorming and playing lots of games, then we did lots of
designing and thought about what we could include in our games. We were really trying to
figure out what made a good maths game.
We started designing our boards and the pieces and had to do lots of reflecting and also
create a logo.
We started in term two and our MTQ sessions flew like a single click of your fingers. Next thing
you knew it, it was term 3, by then we were on fire! All the teachers were about to die with
stress.
Sometimes it was hard working in a group too.
We had just found a new system for the pieces and then we were done!
We did it not to win, but to have fun, to learn and to play.
Next thing on a completely random afternoon during the roll Chiara stops us and said:
“I’ve just read the most exciting email!”
We all go silent, then Chiara reads:
“We’ve just won the high distinction award for our MTQ!”
We all suddenly erupted with excitement!!
She thought it was so exciting she interrupted the roll and she told us that we had got a high
distinction in MTQ!
It was awesome.
We all feel so happy because we worked so hard,

REQUEST FOR PARENTS TO USE QKR, BPAY OR CREDIT/EFTPOS CARDS
Dear Parent/Guardian, In our endeavour to reduce cash handling and to move with common money handling practices today, we ask that you please use the following methods for paying money to the school.
ALL OSHC PAYMENTS SHOULD BE PAID THROUGH THE QKR APP (please speak to Rena at OSHC for instructions and assistance).
ALL other payments of fees including excursions/camps, swimming and athletics should be paid via BPay OR with Credit/Eftpos card at the school office. This is the most effective way to make payments to the school.
BPay is easy and a secure way to pay the school. Money is transferred directly into the school bank account and is tagged to your student’s fees. Credit/Eftpos card payments are made at the office and we can identify immediately who and what the payment is for. Each morning the school office receives a report of any payments made through our school’s BPay facility and our Credit/Eftpos machine. Office staff will then credit the individual student’s account with the fees paid. To use BPay:
In anticipation, thank you for your support of the preferred BEPS Parent Payment Options, using BPay and Credit/Eftpos card. ALSO, thank you for using QKR for payments for OSHC fees. It is much appreciated. Regards, Janet Di Pilla Principal

Friday 25 November 3.30pm to 8pm
Our Twilight Market is a huge festival of fun for kids and grown-ups.
Why not leave work early or take the day off? Invite your friends and family to come too. We want the entire BEPS community to join in, lend a hand and have fun together.
Beer, toys, postcards, publicity – help needed Lots of people have volunteered to help with the Twilight Market – thank you – but we still need people to join the team in a range of roles: as Team Leaders for the beer stall and the Kids Café (starting in last week of Term 3); as collectors to help sort second-hand book and toy donations (Oct/Nov); a publicity coordinator to work through our list of free ‘what’s on’ listings and websites (Oct); as postcard distributors (letterboxing) in November; plus a range of small jobs that can be done at home or at school. Please get in touch! Email: [email protected]
The Twilight Market is our biggest fundraiser of the year and is run by volunteer BEPS parents/carers. The 2016 organising crew includes: Kate Jeffrey, Cate O’Neill, Anthony Alembakis, Jane Agius, Jane Kemelfield, Libby Smith, Helen McDonald, Susi Allender and Clare Barry, with support from many others in discrete roles. A BIG THANKS to Jenni Wanigasekera for help seeking raffle prizes this month.
