Concentration & Density Measurement- microwaves technology

We measure dry substance, brix value, concentration and water content, using the latestmicrowave transmission technology.The measurement is carried out during the ongoing process,providing real-time information about the trends in concentration or dry substance. The systemsare proven to be highly accurate and reliable – for various liquids as well as pastes andsuspensions.We provide sensor systems for the installation on vessels or pipelines.

Microwaves penetrate the material to be measured. The dielectric constant of the materialindicates the influence on the microwaves.The dielectric constant of water is 20 times greater thanother materials. This results in a strong interaction of the microwaves with water which is thenmeasured as attenuation and phase shift. In this way the water content can be very accuratelydetermined.

Our density measuring systems are absolutely non-contacting and non-intrusive. The densitymeasurement can be carried out on all liquids and bulk materials, including highly acidic, alkali orsaline solutions and suspensions. Clamped on the outer wall of the pipeline, chute or vessel thesystem components do not come into contact with the measured material and are therefore notexposed to wear and tear. You will get process insight from the outside.All our densitometers provide maintenance-free operation and can be easily installed on existingpipelines without process down time. The density systems are adaptable to all pipelines from 25 to1000 mm in diameter.

Gamma radiation is attenuated as it passes through a pipeline.This attenuation is measured by adetector. The extent to which the radiation is attenuated is dependent on the density of the mediumin the pipeline. The higher the density, the less radiation reaches the detector.

Berthold Technologies offers radiometric (nucleonic) density systems that are specificallydesigned for use in hydraulic fracturing and cementing applications. The systems are installed onblender trucks, high pressure lines and cementing lines, providing an online measurement of PPA,PPG, density in SPU or solid concentration.Our fracturing systems stand out in the market for theirhigh repeatability and ruggedness against mechanical shock and vibrations and the low sourceactivities (10 or 20 mCi as a standard).

Moisture measurements are carried out online during the ongoing process, providing rapid andprecise real-time information on the current water content. Measurements performed areabsolutely non-contacting, which lays the foundation for a long-term operation, free of wear andmaintenance.

Moisture Measurement- near infrared technology

MCT 460 are near infrared (NIR) moisture, oil & coat weight sensors that provide dependable andprecise product analysis for industries worldwide. Each MCT460 measurement produces analogand digital outputs for control. Bus Interfaces, such as Ethernet, Modbus, Profibus, etc are alsoavailable.

Measuring principleLight from the lamp is directed through the rotating, narrow band-pass NIR filters. The filtersseparate the light into NIR wavelengths, selected specifically by Berthold for the measurementand application being performed. The NIR light is then directed onto the product being measured,which is generaly on a conveyor belt or moving web.Subsequently, the light reflected off of the product is captured by a mirror and focused onto a Leadsulfide detector. The detector’s microvolt output is then taken by the on-board “smart” circuit boardand converted into percent moisture or other engineering units.

Transport processes remainundisturbed thanks to the non-contact measurement processes used. The use of diversemeasurement principles guarentees that the best possible choice for the individual application bemade. From mass flow rates as small as several t/h to the lowest concentrations of 0,1 mg/m3, anydust or other bulk material is reliably detected.

The technology is based on the effect of electrostatic induction of charged particles which occursnaturally e.g. through friction during conveying.The electrically charged particles generate a signal on the grounded transport duct passingthrought the sensor area. Only moving particles generate a signal, deposits on the sensor surfaceare not detected.(DYNAguard P, GM, K, V, S)

The DYNAmas is a flow meter used to determine the mass flow rate of bulk material. Almost anyproduct such as dust, powder or granulates which is being transported in pneumatic conveyingsystems or by gravity in pipelines can be measured without contact. The device simultaneouslymeasures the concentration and the velocity of the bulk material in the pipeline. With these twovalues and the given diameter of the measuring pipeline the mass flow rate is calculated andoutput through the evaluation unit DYNAcon.

Continuous flow measuring of bulksolids DYNAmasUsed for continuous flow measurement ofall kinds of bulk materials by applying thecapacitive measuring principle, in free fall,as well as for pneumatic transport systems.

Flow Measurement of bulk solids withmicrowave-technology DYNAM-flowDesigned for flow measurement in metallicpipelines from a few kg/h to many t/h. Thesystem is suitable for on-line measurementof powders, dust, pellets, and granulates.

The measurement principle is based on the physical Doppler-Effect, where the sensor generates auniform field in the microwave frequency range inside the pipe. These microwaves are reflected byparticles passing through the pipe. The calculation of frequency and amplitude changesguarantees the accurate measurement of solid flow.

Non-contacting weighing systems are used in numerous industries, such as mining, buildingmaterials, power generating or pulp & paper. The measurement can be performed on all conveyorsystems. It is often the only reliable method to capable of determining the flow rate. Our measuringsystems are particularly suitable for the monitoring of loading, dosing and mixing processes, aswell as for production and output control.

Based on the radiometric principle, our bulk flow meters are highly robust and can be operated inthe most demanding and hostile of process conditions.The radiometric belt weigher works non-contacting, with a scintillation detector installed beneath and a shielded source mounted above theconveying system. Radiation is directed through the measurement point and attenuated as itpasses through the conveyor. The extent to which it is attenuated depends on the conveyor load.

Our radiometric level switches are used in a wide variety of industries, providing either a high or lowlevel alarm. The measurement is carried out non-contacting and non-intrusive.All components of the measurement system are mounted on the outer wall of the vessel, withoutany contact with the measured material. They can be installed on all types of vessels or bunkerslike hot storage tanks, vessels with agitators, high-pressure reactors, cyclones or feeder chutes.

Level Measurement, Continuous Level- radiometric technology

Our level measurement gauges are used to monitor measuring ranges, from a few millimeters upto several dozen meters.The radiometric level measurements are non-contacting and non-intrusive.As the components are mounted on the outer wall, they do not come into contact with themeasured material and are therefore not exposed to wear and tear. The level transmitters areuniversally applicable to all kinds of vessels, reactors, autoclaves or bunkers.

Based on the radiometric principle, our level gauges are reliably operated under extremeconditions. The measurement is carried out irrespective of the material temperature, pressures orthe chemical properties of the measured material. Interior installations such as agitators etc. don'taffect the measurement performance.

Radiometric measuring principleThe radiometric mold level measurement is maintenance-free and applicable to different moldtypes. Successful applications can also be found in Beam Blank and Round casters. Gammaradiation is attenuated as it passes through the mold. This attenuation is measured by a detector.The extent to which the radiation is attenuated depends on the mold level. The higher the level ofmolten metal in the mold, the less radiation will reach the detector. In this manner, the mold levelcan be reliably monitored - irrespective of dust, temperature and vibrations.

A coil inside the sensor generates an electromagnetic field, penetrating deep into the mold. As aresult eddy currents are induced into the top layer of the molten metal. These eddy currents in turngenerate a counteracting electromagnetic field – its strength being proportional to the distancebetween sensor and molten metal inside the mold. In this way the mould level can be determinedvery precisely and irrespective of casting powder or slag.

The interface position between two liquid phases or the height of different product layers can beeasily determined with the radiometric measurement solutions from Berthold. Our products areeven used to monitor emulsion layers. By measuring the density profile of the liquids, separationprocesses can be reliably monitored. All measurements are carried out in a non-contactingmanner - detectors and all electronic components are mounted on the outside of the vessel. Thusthe detectors are easily accessible and not exposed to the pressure and temperature conditionsinside the vessel.

Measuring principleGamma radiation is attenuated when transmitting a vessel. The attenuation by the heavy phase ismuch stronger due to its higher density. The light phase hardly attenuates and the gammaradiation arrives virtually without weakening at the detector side. Based on the measured intensityof the gamma radiation the height of the heavy phase and finally the location of the interface can bedetermined very precisely.

The GammaScan®2 detects the presence ofradioactive material emitting gamma radiationin all types of shipments. The measuringsystem consists of two or three high-sensitivityscintillation detectors, usually placed in front ofa weighbridge. A control unit evaluatesdetector signals and transmits them to thesoftware that generates graphics, photos,trucks plate recognit ion (archiving),customized report editing, emission of emails,sms, date, etc. When the gamma radiationexceeds a threshold value set duringcommissioning sound and light alarms of theevalution unit are activated.

GammaScan® (without computer)

The GammaScan detects the presence ofradioactive material in vehicles loaded withscrap iron or waste. The optimal vehicle speedshould be between 4 and 10 km/h. Themeasuring system comprises two highsensitivity scintillation detectors, placed justbefore the weighbridge, and an evaluation unitfor monitoring. A sound and light alarmintegrated into the evaluation unit is actived if apresence threshold, set when the system iscommissioned, is exceeded.
