The 2016 edition of the Finisterra Arrábida Film Art & Tour-ism Festival Festival saw an amazing increase in the number of submissions which rose from 178 to 232 films, and from 64 to 87 from 5 continents. In its 5th edition the Festival is clearly a consolidated event having solidifies its credibility and impact and attained international recognition as one of Europe’s best film festivals. This Festival has at its heart the objective of promoting the Ar-rabida Region in the world of cinema and so attract directors and producers to one of the best and most interesting destina-tions with the highest number of daylight hours of sunshine in Europe for filming. It is with great pleasure that we welcome an ever-increasing number of requests to film in the region, ranging from major film production companies to high end advertising brands for advertising campaigns. Every year we challenge those who visit us during the festival, to produce at least one small video to promote the festival itself, the region or the country. This challenge has become a veritable promotion engine of Portugal and the Arrabida region. What differentiates the Festival is also the multi-faceted experi-ence it has offered over the years. Ranging from initiation into diving, boat tours along the coast, wine and cheese tasting as well as fantastic gastronomy where fish is one of the main at-tractions.To promote this edition we have organised an international conference on “Cinema and Tourism” at the Lusofona Univer-sity in Lisbon for film and tourism students . There will be film screening sessions at the “Culto Café” in Palmela and “Chá de Histórias” in Cacilhas as well as an expansion of the project to involve new partners. We will also be holding a Sesimbra photographic exhibition on Antartida organised by the Institute for Education and Citizenship showing the work carried out by the Portuguese teams on that continent. Another photography exhibition will be organised by the Guest Country, Indonesia so as to introduce one of the largest countries in the Orient, perhaps the first step to your dream journey. The Jury is composed of 13 members from Spain, the Unit-

ed Kingdom, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Italy and Russia and has have travelled “around the world” just by watching and classifying all the videos we received for this year’s competing entries. Every year the quality is higher and making decisions is much harder. The Arrábida Film Commission who organsie this festival has as its main aim the promotion and support to the various film productions filmed in the Arrabida Re-gion and we firmly believe that in the future the festival may come to be a a very im-portant catalyst in the cine-tourism promotion of the region.

For the fifth consecutive year, the Arrábida Film Commis-sion, in partnership with the Sesimbra City Council and a large number of other entities, will be hosting another Finisterra Fes-tival. The festival was originally the brainchild of photogra-pher Carlos Sargedas, a film enthusiast, and began by showing tourism films depicting various world destinations. Today, the festival is also an opportunity to showcase Sesimbra and all its potentials, particularly to professionals in the film industry, also known as the “seventh art”. This year’s 232 films from 64 countries are clear evidence that year after year Finisterra is attracting a growing number of producers and kindling greater interest, not only in the event itself but also in the hospitality extended to entrants and, foremost, by the natural beauty of our region’s “scenarios”. Congratulations to Finisterra’s organisers for another edition that will once again exhibit amazing films and open a window to the world revealing all of Sesimbra mu-nicipality’s enchantments.

tourism, but where probably a greater variety of possibilities may arise. In fact, from the augmented reality to 4d cinema, there is a great amount of innovations that invite us to new forms of experience where, no doubt, future possibilities shall continue to emerge for us to explore new relationships and synergies between cinema and tourism.

The Department of Film and Media Arts of Lusófona University is a young and innovative structure that, over the past two decades, has not ceased to explore these multiple crossing and experimentation possibilities. Today we are the largest education institution in film and media arts in Portugal, and we have the best-equipped production and innovation centre in this area. The existence of our equipment and infrastructures, has allowed us to develop an ambitious internationalization project, which has been consolidated in recent years, among other initiatives, through the creation and accreditation by the European Union of two Er-asmus Mundus Master’s degrees, which annually attract more than 700 candidates from all over the globe. Moreover, in our effort for internationalization we find new international col-laboration fields with tourism, that we are certain shall result in the future in new and fruitful initiatives as the one of the Finisterra Festival of which we are part this year.

“The Audiovisual Sector today: overlap with the areas of tourism, culture and leisure”

Manuel José Damásio is a Lecturer on Tourism at Lusófona Uni-versity. He is an aggregate Professor at the Minho University for Communication Studies. He also ahs a PhD in Communication Science from the Nova University of Lisbon. He is the Director of the Cinema and Media Arts at the Lusofona University. Manuel is also the Senior Researcher at CICANT – The Research Centre for Communication, Culture and Information Technology.

In a context of strong transformation of the production, use and consumption of moving images, film remains as one of the great-est forms of content production, a creative process increasingly complex and technologically developed. Tourism is, on the other hand, a vibrant economic sector, a multifaceted activity covering various fields, ranging from services to cultural dissemination. Nowadays, the overlapping areas between film and tourism may be identified along three axes: representation, attraction, and ex-perience. In the area of representation, we identify the relevance that the cinematic discourse plays today is in building references to places and cultures, “images” of other provenances that often determine consumer choices. For some reason today all major cit-ies or regions have a “Film Commission” interested in attracting productions, aware that we all are of the economic impact that a film production may play, particularly, in the tourism sector. In the same vein, we understand that the space of filmmaking, where figurations of worlds and spaces are built, definitions of values that are essential today in the construction of brands and that are essential references for tourism promotion. We have no illusions that the fact that Peter Jackson chose New Zealand to shoot The Lord of the Rings has undoubtedly had an impact on the growth of New Zealand as a reference tourist destination. Finally, we have the experience. Today, probably as never before, film continues to adapt and evolve, incorporating in its discourses and modes of production, technologies and processes that invite new forms of experience. This is probably the area where our knowledge is even more limited concerning the intersection between film and

XIX)

“Success is born of the will, determination and persistence in reaching a goal. Even not reaching the target, who seeks and wins obstacles, at least do admirable things.” (José de Alencar, Brazilian writer of the century. XIX).”This has been the goal of the Arrábida Film Art & Tourism Festival and his Director Carlos Sargedas who has been a tire-less conductor in the effort of its consolidation.I had the privilege to accompany its birth and its growth over these five years. Despite its youth, this year once again we reached a new movies record (232) and participating countries (63).However, more important than the number, it should stress the enormous quality, talent and participation of young producers and filmmakers who year after year have toasted the Festival with the production of some real works of art.Year after year, the Festival has established itself as a key ele-ment in promoting the hospitality and the enormous patrimo-nial, cultural and natural heritage not only of this region, but also from Portugal. It is noteworthy that several filmmakers have shown promotional films on different regions of Portugal with a unique quality and in some cases have even become viral and reinforced the tourist reputation of the region and Portugal. It is this reality that the Festival and its jury intend to once again reward, knowing beforehand the enormous responsibil-ity and difficulty of choice as a result of the quality of many of the films presented. The festival also has another feature: a multifaceted jury, with people endowed with unique, distinct but complementary ex-periences allowing to enrich the difficult process of evaluation of the films.

Eduardo MoraesSarmentoPresident of the Jury---

Finally, I would like to commend and thank the work of my honorable colleagues and members of the jury and friends who over the years have worked as a real team. The success of the Festival is also due to them and it was a privilege for me to have been the President of the magnificent jury this year.Of course, Carlos Sargedas and Arrábida Film Commission are to be congratulated for another edition that will surely be another success. Finally, a word of praise to all producers, directors and cinematographers who shared their work and their creations. Many of them will surely have successful careers, al-though they may not be awarded in this event. But the most important thing is to be present, share experiences and experiencing the entire festive and fraternal atmosphere that has been the hallmark of this event. Over the years, many of the participants had successful films and once again we expect this to happen again.See you next year!

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Lisbon congratu-lates the 5th edition of Finisterra Arrábida Film Art & Tour-ism Festival 2016, and thanks the organization, represented by the Director, Mr. Carlos Sargedas for his kind invitation for Indonesia to be the guest country of this 5th edition of the festival. Located between the mainland of Southeast Asia and Austral-ia, Indonesia is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and Pacific Oceans. It is the largest archipelago country in the world and the fourth most populous country in the world with over 250 million people. It consists of six main islands, Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Bali, Kalimantan (part of Borneo) and Irian Jaya (western half of New Guinea) and 30 small archipelagos. Its 17,000 islands (of which 6000 inhabited) are scattered over more than 4828 km, mostly on a volcanic belt of over 300 volcanoes, most extinct. The landscape varies from island to island, high mountains and plateaus, coastal lowlands and alluvial plains. The rich cultural heritage reflects Indonesia’s dynamic his-tory and ethnic diversity. More than 700 languages are used across the archipelago and there are about 300 ethnic groups, each with cultural identities developed over the centuries, in-fluenced by Indian, Arabic, Chinese, and European explorers. Traditional Javanese and Balinese dances, for example, con-tain aspects of Hindu culture and mythology, as do wayang kulit (shadow puppets) performances. In addition, traditional dances of Indonesia reflect the rich diversity of Indonesian people. In this fifth instalment of the festival, Indonesia presents the Portuguese people in general, and the people from Sesimbra in particular, with a photo exhibition entitled: “Indonesia at a Glance”, a culinary feast and traditional dances. I hope you enjoy.

In dull Autumn days I like spending my time in the mountains hoping to climb up the clouds that look like the waves of the sea. Very weird situations to find. It took a lot of sacrifices and patience: sometimes the condi-tions seemed to be good but, often, the fog was too high.

LISBON MOVIE TOUR – The Advantages of Film Tourism in LisbonNowadays we are witnessing a vast change in world toursim trends and the role of the tourist. Tourists today are less focused on a mere visit to a place of interest, and prefer a veritable travel experience. To this end and within the scope of tourism segmentation, for this type of tourist culture holds a specific and visible significance through cultural attractions. Tourism and culture are terms which, within the univer-se of travel are inseperable. The search for innovative and authentic experiences through travel reveals the im-portance of culture in tourism destinations. It is through culture, its expressions, goods and services, that the tourist can experience different settings which provide an opportunity for learning, contemplation and leisure. Thus what we will cover is the phenomenon of film tourism and its advantages. Some of the topics covered will be:- Diversification of classic itineraries;- Diversification of the distribution of tourism in areas not usually included in tradi-tional tours (example: Areeiro/Avalade quarters);- Potentially cultural tourismfor shops and local commerce (ex.: films Night Train to Lisbon and the Pereira company).

The choice of “location” is becoming increasingly important to the point of today become a real “business” for producers who come here also a good source of revenue and funding for films. But at the same time it is essential for preparation of the “set” where small details can make all the difference. PRESENTATION“ÍNDIAS” e “VERA CRUZ” by de author João Morgado

May 7 | 15h | | Biblioteca Municipal de Sesimbra | Free Access

ÍNDIAS – João Morgado, Portuguese author, winner of several literary prizes, returns to bookstores all over the country with a controversial his-torical novel about Vasco da Gama, the imperfect hero in the history of Portugal.Pêro da Covilhã went to the East Indies by land but didn’t return. Vasco da Gama reached there by sea and returned to receive all the merits. The king D. Manuel I determined that Gama would be the captain-mor of all armed forces. However, as soon as the first armada was prepared - with more men and boats that never-, the king was forced to abdicate from his man. The glory was granted the Pedro Alvares Cabral. Why?Why was he so hated by the Church? By his own men? By noble families? By businessmen? By Military Order of the Cross of Christ? By Military Order of the Cross of Santiago? And why was he hated by all and had the admiration of D. Manuel I?To find the clarification that the history books have forgotten, we must tra-vel side by side with Vasco Da Gama along the romance, and discover its strong personality, his relations, his hatred and connection to his Majesty the King.

VERA CRUZ - This novel takes us to the golden period of the Portuguese Discoveries. The result of a profound and unprecedented historical rese-arch carried out by the author, inspired by one popular hero of the history of Portugal. Vera Cruz reconstructs the life of Pedro Alvares Cabral and the mentalities of the 15th and 16th century. Exceptional rigor of research. Skillful in reconstruction of a season.“Fabulous romance” - Miguel Real (criticising literary in the Jornal de Letras)

The Arctic and the Antarctic possess their own fascination: The blues of the icebergs, the white of the pristine snow, the beauty of the animals that live there. But the Polar regions are much more than that. Is in the Arctic and in the Antarctic that considerable research has been conducted in addressing key ques-tions important for the planet: What is the effect of climate change in polar ecosystems; How much is the level of ice melting and what is its consequences in the world ocean currents; Which changes have been occurring in the ozone layer; What is the impact of ocean acidification. These are some of the questions that scientists from all over the world, including from Portugal, are looking for answers.Portugal has more than 50 scientists in 15 teams from Portuguese Universities and Research Institutes carrying out research in the Arctic and in the Antarctic, studying some of the questions, collaborating with numerous countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain, Brazil and Canada. This photo exhibition aims to emphasize the importance of the Polar Regions in our planet through images collected from Portuguese scientists, and colleagues, while in the Arctic and in the Antarctic, and to take us to the limits of Science.
