Agency Recommendations: NFPA 72 recommends a smoke alarm in everybedroom, outside each sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroomsand on every level, including basements and excluding crawl spaces andunfinished attics. NFPA 720 recommends CO alarms outside of every sleepingarea.

Ionization technology is generally more sensitive thanphotoelectric technology at detecting small particles which tendto be produced in greater amounts by flaming fires–whichconsume combustible materials rapidly and spread quickly. Sources

of these fires may include paper burning in a wastebasket or a grease fire in thekitchen.

Photoelectric technology is generally more sensitive than ionizationtechnology at detecting large particles which tend to be producedin greater amounts by smoldering fires–which may smolder forhours before bursting into flames. Sources of these fires may include
