Tryout Prerequisites

To be eligible to tryout on the JETS cheer team, each candidate may submit the required cheer tryout packet at the registration meeting on March 11th, 2013, or submit fully completed the first day of tryouts.

Note: Be aware that a candidate may be ineligible for tryouts if she/he has two or more “Ds” for the prior and/or current grading period(s) or a GPA < 2.0, the candidate must be passing all classes.

Please Note: Personal responsibility is an important quality for a cheerleader to possess; therefore, failure to meet the above requirements by the indicated due date may affect the candidate’s eligibility to participate in the tryout. If you earn a position on the 2013-2014 cheer teams you are expected to accept the position. If, for whatever reason, you don’t think you can meet the obligations expected of the JETS cheerleaders, then please do not tryout. Not all tryout candidates are guaranteed a position in the Jets Cheerleading Program

Coaches and teammates are expected to do what is best for the team as a whole, not as an individual.

Tryout Process

Candidates will be judged on all aspects of cheerleading ability. JETS tryouts will be closed to all spectators.

Each candidate will be assigned a number; for the benefit of the coaches, also cheer candidates will be photographed the day of tryouts. Photos are to help coaches identify “who is who” when deciding teams, pictures will not be used for any other purpose than that.

Scores will be computed for the cheerleader candidates based upon the following areas:Tumbling Confidence VoiceMotions Enthusiasm Teacher EvaluationsDance Rhythm Clinic AttendanceStunting Cheer

Selections: The coaches will make their final selection using the criteria outlined above. Candidates who are not present for tryouts forfeit the chance to tryout. There will be no make-ups unless arrangements have been made prior. All tryout decisions are final.

OPERATING PRINCIPLES

Mission StatementElk River School District Cheerleaders shall complete the mission statement of the school by promoting spirit, develop good sportsmanship among students, show enthusiasm, show leadership, and loyalty among the ERSD community. Cheerleaders shall encourage by example a desire for excellence in – academics, athletics, interpersonal relationships, and conduct. As ambassadors to other schools, they will represent JETS CHEER with warmth and friendliness.

PurposeThe primary purpose of the competition cheerleader is to represent the Elk River, Rogers, and Zimmerman communities in a positive way through competitions, events and leadership in and out of school and throughout the district.

Cheerleaders must set an appropriate example to others by obeying school and Minnesota State High School League rules (www.mshsl.org). They are expected to cooperate with and show respect for each other, the coaches, and the community at large.

The coaching staff makes decisions based on what is best for the team as a whole. Similar to the most competitive sports, there are athletes that practice with the team, that may not have the same “play-time”, or in cheerleading, competition time.

ConductCheerleaders are expected to adhere to acceptable standards of citizenship at all times, both in and out of uniform. Cheerleaders are expected to be loyal to their school, to fellow squad members, and to their common purpose. Per MNSHSL rules, the use of smoking materials, alcohol, or illegal drugs will be grounds for suspension or immediate removal from the squad. Insubordination, physical or verbal altercations between members, verbal/physical derogatory expressions are considered inappropriate conduct and will not be tolerated. Violation of any rules established by the coaches and/or administration may result in one or more of the following: suspension and/or removal from the squad. Individuals who make the cheerleading squad will receive a copy of the point system/infractions list to review and sign.

Athlete removed/quits the team:Should she/he leave the squad under unapproved conditions in either season, she/he may not try out for cheerleading again without coach approval. If your cheerleader is removed or quits the team any monies paid will not be refunded (unless the season is paid in full then a prorated amount will be refunded), and any monies due to Jets Booster club will still be collected.

6

Attendance:

Attendance is mandatory at all assigned events, meetings, practices, and team functions; this includes team fundraisers. A cheerleader is expected to be on time for all events. In case of illness, the cheerleader is expected to notify a coach of his/her absences. Unexcused absences will result in disciplinary actions, according to the point system/infractions list. Attendance will be taken at events; suspension, and removal from the squad could result from unexcused absences/tardiness. (After school jobs, vacations, making up tests without prior approval, or attending a practice for another fall or winter sport or activity are not considered to be excused absences. Use advisement wisely!) In the case of medical excuses other than illness (i.e. injuries, or any other condition that might physically hinder the cheerleader from practicing), she/he is required to come to practice and watch in order to remain a member in good standing. If a cheerleader goes to the doctor they must have a doctors note in order to be able to participate in practice and competitions. If a cheerleader does not get a note they must sit out until a coach receives one. Coaches discretion will be used in all circumstances.

Competition Expectations:1. Attendance to all scheduled competitions is mandatory.2. Calendars will be given so personal schedules can be worked around.3. Competitions may be added/changed4. Cheerleaders must abide by all MNSHSL regulations and ACCA Cheer

guidelines.5. Before entering a competition, you must be competition ready.

Cheerleading is a time-consuming activity. Persons, who have other serious commitments (other than academics) such as a job, other sports teams, or other obligations, are strongly encouraged to discuss their commitments with the coach and their parents/guardians before deciding to participate. We will do our best to work with you if you are involved with another sport but since the practice/competition dates are set these obligations will not be allowed as an excuse for missing a practice or a competition. No exceptions!

7

Practices:

1. Cheerleaders shall attend ALL practices: summer, after school and/or evening. Each cheerleader shall be allotted four (4) excused absences throughout the season (not to be taken during a competition week) after this time, excused absences earn a cheerleader points. For medical circumstances please talk to the coach.

2. Cheerleaders shall be on time for all practices, including summer, before and after school. If a cheerleader is less than five (5) minutes late, he/she will be required to perform some kind of physical consequence (such as jumps). If he/she is more than five (5) minutes late, points will be earned. Excused tardiness will require a note from a parent. Three (3) parent tardies will result in one (1) excused absence.

3. Cheerleaders shall arrive to practices in appropriate attire (according to school dress code) including: shorts, t-shirts, cheer shoes tightly tied, sports bras, hair pulled back, no jewelry. Clothing should be comfortable for dancing, jumping, running, etc. It must fit properly (no baggie pants or sliding straps) and facilitate safe and effective athletic movement. If the clothing is dangerous or makes it impossible for the cheerleader to participate in practice, the cheerleader may earn points.

4. Cheerleaders shall stay and participate for the entire duration of practice, including helping to put away equipment. Leaving early shall be handled in the same manner as arriving late, with the same consequences.

Only reasons listed below are excused absences for any activity. A note (before the absence, if possible) signed by the parents or guardians stating the reason for the absence must be furnished to the coach. This note needs to be given to the coach by the second day back from absence. If not, an unexcused absence will be given.

Personal illness or accidentFuneral or death in the familySpecial school activity (with permission of the coach ahead of time) Family emergencyReligious holidaysAcademic work or tutor with a teacher, note brought to coach

*Senior pictures, babysitting, driver’s training, or a job will not be allowed as excused absences. These can be scheduled around practices. After an absence, whether excused or unexcused, cheerleaders are expected to learn what was missed, outside of regular practice, unless instructed by coach.

8

Conduct

Cheerleaders will conduct themselves properly at all times. They are representatives of the squad, Community Education, and the community in general.Cheerleaders must be respectful of the squad members and coaches at all times.Cheerleaders will display good sportsmanship at all times.

Cheerleaders will not display bad/dangerous habits such as smoking, drinking, using drugs, or improper language or inappropriate behavior. These will warrant proper disciplinary action. See MSHSL Guidelines.

Point system/infractions list

The Competition Cheerleading Points System is the means of tracking behavior and responsibility breaches throughout the cheerleading season. This system helps keep the squad focused on their commitment to the cheer program, each other, and themselves. The point system is as follows:

0.5 Points

-Excused absences, after first four (4)-Minor behavior breaches (whining, negative attitude, inappropriate language, etc) -Inappropriate clothing at practice and other cheer sponsored activities/events Conduct -Breaches not specifically addressed

1 Point

-Unexcused late to practice or leaving early (more than 5 min.)-Major behavioral breaches (defiant behavior, extreme negativity, etc.)

2 Points

-Unexcused absence from practice-Unexcused late to an event/competition, or leaving early Dangerous behavior at practice, or other event

5 Points

-Smoking, drinking, using drugs

***Accumulating two (2) points will result in suspension of one (1) week, if a competition falls within that week you will sit out. Accumulating five (5) points will result in dismissal from the squad. A second suspension, even if five (5) points have not been accumulated, will result in immediate removal from the squad.***

9

Suspension

Those who are suspended are cheerleaders and members of the squad but because of the following circumstances are not able to participate. They will need to attend practice and competitions to support the squad but will not be participating. This system is used as a consequence for behaviors that do not benefit the cheerleader and/or squad and also as an incentive to keep up on responsibilities. Cheerleaders will be suspended based on the following conditions:

-Grade in any class falls to a D or below (until grade is pulled up to at least a C) -Any reason based on coach discretion i.e attitudes. -Accrued 2 points.

Social Media

Social Media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and any other not listed, is a reflection of yourself and your activities. If you choose to participate in this program you are representing Elk River School District Cheer team (Jets) in a positive manner. All photographs and written posts need to be school appropriate. It not only speaks to your character but also on the coaches and so we are holding you accountable to follow Minnesota State High School League guidelines. The JETS Cheer Coaches page will post information/pictures about the team. To get more connected to squads "friend" the JETS Cheer Coaches. Sorry but we are unable to "friend" you on Facebook from our personal accounts. If you are unclear of these guidelines please contact the coach.

NationalsIn the event that JETS cheerleading has an opportunity to attend nationals the following are required to attend:-70% score or higher at a UCA Regional Competition-All participants must be passing all classes (grades will be checked at the nationals parent meeting)-All Season dues paid in full.-All Traveling arrangements/accommodations will be set and chosen by the Jets cheer program. Athletes & Parents will not be staying together -In order for a team to attend there needs to be a minimum of 12 athletes that meet this criteria.

After that decision, we will need to fundraise additional money to cover the national costs, no previously fundraised money (unless already dedicated to a National Competition expense) will be used to Nationals.

10

Fundraising/Volunteering Expectations:

Parents and Cheerleaders will be expected to participate and volunteer in fundraising events. Sign up sheets will be made available at the time of registration. A master copy of all volunteer hours will be held by the Booster Club. If you have questions or need to sign up please contact Becky Altman at [email protected] or 952-913-3439.

Two separate checks will be collected at the time of registration. The checks will be returned to you at the end of the season if you meet the fundraising/volunteering expectations.

1. $60.00 – Heggies Pizza Fundraiser, all cheerleaders must sell 20 or more pizzas.2. $60.00 - Parent Volunteering, hours spent working the Fall Preview do not go towards your volunteer hours.

If you choose not to sell at least 20 Pizza’s and/or do not sign up for volunteer hours through the Booster Club, one if not both checks will not be refunded.

100% Participation in the Fall Preview is mandatory for all Parents and Cheerleaders and will not go towards your additional required volunteer hours.

Adjustments to the Fundraising schedule will be made by the Coaches and/or Booster Club as needed.

PROBLEM COMMUNICATION

There are steps to communicating with the coaches. As a coaching staff we ask you to adhere to our 2-hour rule and contacting us only within 2 hours before or after a practice or competition; to be respectful of the coaches personal time.

1. If your cheerleader has a problem, encourage them to talk to their direct coaches first to resolve the issue before you call or email a coach.

2. If the issue is not resolved, a parent meeting will be set up by the coach. At the parent meeting the athlete and parents must be present.

3. If the issue is still not resolved, the coaches will make a decision about the future of the cheerleaders position on the team.

11

Financial Obligations Please be aware that cheerleading is an expensive activity, but every effort will be made to keep costs down. A list will be generated from year to year to inform parents of the anticipated financial obligations associated with the cheerleading program (included in this packet). If, after reviewing the list, you feel you cannot afford this cost, please speak with the coaches as soon as possible. We will do our best to help with other financial arrangements. We do not want anyone excluded from cheerleading due to monetary issues. Each cheerleader will receive itemized bills for camp clothes, and accessories. Once uniform orders have been placed, a cheerleader and his/her parents are responsible for the payment of these bills, even if the cheerleader quits or is removed from the squad.

Fund-raising programs will be provided to help defray some of the costs, but please recognize that there are no guarantees regarding how much money a cheerleader will make.

Again, no monies will be refunded if a cheerleader quits or is removed from the squad. It is a privilege to be apart of the JETS Cheer Program. Money that is raised will only be used within the program. No refunds will be given for money not used.

JETS Cheer Booster Club

The booster club is a nonprofit corporation and (1) facilitates the payment of your child's fees and (2) is dedicated to raising funds for the coaches and cheerleaders to be competitive in this sport. Fundraising dollars are for the cheer program as a whole and are not allowed to be distributed to individuals under any circumstance.

This activity is mainly independent, sponsored by Community Education, and as such we need a governing body of parents, guardians, and coaches to help maintain an organized program. Parents/guardians will be expected to participate with the Booster Club. The Board will consist of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, 2 Fundraising Organizers and Coaches. The Booster Club will be overseeing the following:

FundraisingEnd of year banquetSupervise FinancesOther items to be determined by parents, cheerleaders, and coaches

12

CHEERLEADERSCheerleading requires a GREAT deal of time, commitment, and dedication on the part of the cheerleaders. Academics should always be a priority, cheerleading should be next, with all other activities to follow. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. The cheerleader will maintain academic eligibility (MSHSL guidelines)2. The cheerleader will represent JETS in a positive manner in action, dress, and

overall conduct and will exhibit acceptable standards of citizenship at all times (e.g. in the halls, in the classroom, at events, in the community, etc.)

3. The cheerleader will refrain from gossiping or any form of verbal or physical confrontation.

4. The cheerleader will raise school spirit.5. The cheerleader will wear appropriate uniforms on Spirit Days and at every

scheduled event.6. The cheerleader will follow through with all commitments (cheer or otherwise).

The cheerleader will attend all practices, games, and functions and will be on time to said events. Further, he/she will plan family outings, appointments, and other activities with his/her cheerleading schedule in mind. He/she will take responsibility for reminding his/her parent to call to notify the coach of an absence.

7. The cheerleader will communicate in a positive manner with teammates, coaches, and staff.

8. The cheerleader will maintain a positive attitude towards school and cheerleading.9. The cheerleader will continue to be coachable.10. The cheerleader will be able to take directions and criticisms positively.11. The cheerleader will be cooperative.12. The cheerleader will silence their cell phone at practice.13. The cheerleader will have all practice gear with them.14. The cheerleader will refrain from celebrating the misfortune or defeat of another

person, team, or program.15. The cheerleader will accept placements and awards with dignity and class.

13

PARENTSCheerleading requires a GREAT deal of time, commitment, and dedication on the part of the parents. Before tryouts, read and consider all information before allowing your son/daughter to tryout. If your son/daughter is selected please,

• Encourage him/her to abide by the rules set forth by coaches and administrators 100%.

• Attend parent meetings.• Pay bills in a timely fashion.• Refrain from using cheerleading as a punishment. This does not punish one

cheerleader but an entire squad since there is no one to substitute for your cheerleader.

• Agree to notify your coach if your cheerleader is ill.• Oversee the time management of your cheerleader (i.e. practice and game

schedules, homework completion, relaxation time, etc.)• Furnish punctual transportation if needed (particularly if your son/daughter does

not have a drivers license)• Direct concerns about your cheerleader on a individual basis directly to the coach.• Provide all the encouragement your cheerleader needs in his/her pursuit of

excellence.• Parent/Guardians will check the cheer website and emails for any and all updates.

There is no excuse for being uninformed.

Recognizing that unforeseen circumstances do occur, interim changes to anything in this document may be made at the discretion of the coaches and administration. All decisions made by the coaches and/or administration is final.

Cheerleading Commitment Statement

I have read the JETS Cheer Packet in its entirety and understand its contents. I understand the responsibility my child is undertaking by becoming a JETS Cheerleader. I agree to fully support my child and will encourage them to fulfill their commitment. I understand that being a JETS cheerleader is a commitment on the part of the parent as well. I realize that when representing ERSD I must always conduct myself with class and responsibility. I understand that any athlete or parent who does not abide by the rules and regulations contained in their contract, who is consistently negative, or acts in a manner that jeopardize the name and reputation of the JETS Cheer Program, will be subjected to removal with no refund.

Cheer Candidate: I have read the cheerleading packet, understand the tryout procedures and the operating principles of the cheerleading team, and agree to abide by them. Furthermore, if selected I agree to accept the position and to follow all cheer team rules/guidelines. I will give 100% in order to make our team the best possible. I am eagerly looking forward to becoming an active member JETS cheerleading team.

If selected, my son/daughter has my permission to become an active member of the JETS cheerleading team.
