The term was first prominently used in a thesis of theGoldman Sachs investment bank.
Jim ONeill, the chief economist of Goldman Sachs,had coined the word in 2001 while exploring thecountries impact as emerging economicpowerhouses.
He had written a paper called Building Better GlobalEconomic BRICS. which revealed that if the worldwas to evolve economically, we have to involve thesecountries.

The main point of this 2003 paper was to argue thatthe economies of the BRICS are rapidly developingand by 2050 will eclipse most of the current richest
countries of the world.
These countries are not a political alliance, like theEuropean Union, or a formal trading association, butthey have the potential to form a powerful economicgroup.

Brazil is the largest national economy in Latin America.
The world's eighth largest economy at market exchangerates and the ninth largest in purchasing power parity(PPP).
Brazil has a free market economy with abundant naturalresources.
It has large and developed agricultural, mining ,manufacturing and service sectors, as well as a largelabor pool.

Russia has a market economy with enormous naturalresources, particularly oil and natural gas.
It has the 10th largest economy in the world by
nominal GDP and the 6th largest by purchasing powerparity(PPP).
Growth averaging 7% annually.
Oil, natural gas, metals, and timber account for morethan 80% of Russian exports. Aircraft manufacturing isan important industry sector in Russia

INDIA
India is a parliamentary democracy consisting of 28states and 7 union territories where 400 languages arespoken.
Major industries include textiles, telecommunications,
chemicals, food processing, steel, transport equipment,cement, mining, petroleum, machinery and software.
India's external trade has reached a relatively moderateshare of 24% of GDP in 2006, up from 6% in 1985.
Education in India is provided by both public and privatesector.
India ranks second worldwide in farm output and our oilreserves meet 25% of the domestic oil demand.

SOUTH AFRICAS INCLUSION
South Africa was officially admitted as a BRIC nationon December 24th,2010 after being invited by Chinaand the other BRIC countries to join the group.
South Africa stands at a unique position to influenceAfrican economic growth and investment.
South Africa is Africas largest economy, and ranks at
number 31 amongst the global economies.

2010 BRIC summit
The 2010 BRIC summit took place in Brasilia,Brazil on April 16, 2010. This was the second BRICsummit after 2009 . The meeting took place betweenthe four heads of government from the BRIC nations.
Between 2003 and 2007, BRIC countries carried 65%of the expansion of global GDP.
In 2009, the combined GDP of the BRIC countrieswas US$16.3 trillion, or 23.4% of the global total.
From 2003 to 2008, Brazils trade with the other BRICcountries increased by 382%, or US$10.7 billion toUS$51.7 billion

Growth and Trade: Between 2000 and 2005, theBRICs contributed roughly 28% of global growth in USdollars.
Their share of global trade continues to climb at arapid rate.
At 15% currently, it is now double its level in 2001.
The BRICs' share of oil demand is moving steadilyhigher, with an estimated 18% share in the currentyear

FDI also continues to rise (now 15% of the global total,nearly three times higher than in 2000).
Markets: BRICs' stock markets have got gradually re-
