1. IntroductionThe range of Special Shaped Bricks illustrated in the following pages are manufactured to comply with BS 4729. Purpose-made special shaped bricks can also be made to customer requirements subject to manufacturing feasibility. The dimensions of standard special shaped bricks are chosen to co-ordinate with the standard brick size of 215 x 102.5 x 65 mm.The Standard Special Shapes included in this brochure are named by type and coded in accordance with BS 4729 e.g. AN representing angle and cant bricks.
2. Specification2.1 Forms of bricksAlthough the diagrams in this brochure indicate solid bricks, bricks of special shape may be frogged or perforated. All standard bricks manufactured by Ormonde and Tyrone are perforated.
2.2 Faced SurfacesShading in the diagrams shown indicates the surfaces of the special brick that will be faced. Surfaces not visible in the diagrams are not faced. Specials shown in-situ are fully shaded for identificationpurposes only.
2.3 Colour and Surface TextureWith some types of bricks and manufacturing techniques, it is not possible to exactly match the colour and texture of all the exposed faces of special bricks to that of the corresponding standard brick.
2.4 Left and Right Handed BricksLeft and/or Right handed versions will sometimes need to be specified, e.g.(a) where the special shape is asymmetric(b) where the directional nature of the surface texture of the bricks requires them to be laid in one aspect to avoid variations in the appearance in the built wall.
2.5 Compressive StrengthClay bricks of special shapes and sizes may have a lower compressive strength than bricks made to BS EN 771-1, BS3921 or I.S.91, even from the same raw materials.
2.6 DurabilityBricks of special shapes which are to be used in positions where they are liable to be saturated andsubsequently frozen (e.g. parapets, copings, cappings and cills) need to be frost resistant in accordance with the BS EN771-1 durability designation F2 or in the case of BS 3921 durability designation FL.
We recommend that design and workmanship be in accordance with BS5628-3 or IS 325:Part 2.

GOOD SITE PRACTICE
INTRODUCTIONThe importance of good site practice cannot be over emphasised. Design andworkmanship in accordance with BS 5628:Part 3 or IS 325: Part 2 is recommended in orderto achieve successful brickwork.Contractors should observe good site practice in building brickwork in order to meet the designrequirements. Attention should also be given to design detailing which prevents commonproblems. The following checklists provide guidance on preventing problems that occur, but can easilybe avoided.
PREPARATION FOR STORAGE OF MATERIALSAllocate and prepare areas for the storage of materials as in the following examples:BRICKS: Provide a clean firm level surface to avoid the soiling of bricks on site.SANDS: Provide a suitable means of keeping different types of sand separate and uncontaminatedby other building materials, mud or oil.
BAGS OF CEMENT AND LIME: Store off the ground on pallets, protected from rain and positionedso that stocks are used in rotation to avoid deterioration.READY-MIXED SAND AND LIME: Protect it from contamination by other materials and fromdeterioration by inclement weather.
CHECKING DELIVERIES OF BRICKSImmediately on receipt of a consignment of bricks check delivery dockets against specifications ororders and in particular that:- the delivery is of the correct brick type and quantity.- any colour variation is within acceptable limits.- the bricks are within the specified limits of size.- any minor blemishes, such as chips and surface cracks are within acceptable limits. If in doubt about any of the above inform the supplier immediately.
HANDLING, STORAGE AND PROTECTION OF BRICKSUnload bricks to a level hard standing surface leaving banding and packaging in place to avoiddamage such as chipping, soiling or breakage.Protect bricks from rain, splashing by vehicles and mortar mixing. At the end of each working day and in periods of rainfall ensure that opened packs and stacks ofbricks around the site are protected to avoid saturation.Ensure that provision is made for the protection of newly built brickwork from saturation or frostduring winter.
PREPARATION AND BUILDING OF REFERENCE PANELSPrepare a solid base for the building of a reference panel where it can be viewed from 3m in anarea with adequate light and can remain undamaged for the duration of the contract.Build a reference panel from bricks reasonably representative of the average quality of the wholeorder to be delivered, either chosen by the supplier or randomly sampled in accordance withBSI PAS 70 or Clause 9 of BS 3921.A reference panel should consist of at least 100 bricks.Build the reference panel to the desired standard expected throughout the contract to incorporatethe relevant brick bond, mortar colour and joint profile.Reference panels should be protected from saturation.NOTE: In finished brickwork the mortar joint accounts for approximately 17% of the surface area, hence the importance of mortar colour selection. Judgement of mortar colour should only bemade when the panel has dried out sufficiently to represent the final colour.
CLEANLINESS AND PROTECTION OF BRICKWORKKeep brickwork clean and free from mortar or other stains. At the end of each working day and in periods of rain turn back the scaffold board nearest thebrickwork.Ensure good cavity cleaning.Protect from concrete poured above.Protect vulnerable corners and openings from mechanical damage.
BRICKLAYING GENERALDo not lay bricks if the temperature of the mortar falls to freezing point before it sets or if the bricksare frozen or the sand contains ice particles.Protect brickwork if frost is likely to occur before the mortar sets.If the mortar becomes damaged by frost take the brickwork down and rebuild.Protect newly built brickwork from rain but ensure that an air space is maintained between thebrick face and any waterproof covering to avoid risk of staining. To ensure a good appearance blend, mix bricks from at least 3 packs and mix packs from differentdeliveries. Preferably the packs should be broken down vertically rather than horizontally.Bricks with a textured face with a preferred top or bottom should be consistently laid the ‘rightway up’.Bricks may have to be selected for size for short runs, piers, soldier courses and stack-bonded details.
FINAL COMMENTWith attention to design, workmanship and good site practice excellent brickwork can be achieved.
NOTE: Colours shown are as accurate as printing processes will allow. Actual samples are advisedand available on request.
