FDN Floating Breakwaters

The FDN U-block is a oating breakwater element, thatreduces waves in marinas.

Floating breakwaters have some advantages over perma-

nent breakwaters:

Flexible; in time the confguration can be changed

Short construction time; the elements are

preabricated on shore

Low maintenance requirement

Little inuence on the transport o sediment

Low on costs

Functions

The U-block is a oating breakwater and a quay in one.

Due to this combination and the eectiveness o the U-

block, the U-block is an economic solution or marinas.

Design

The design o the FDN U-block was done in cooperation

with Delt University o Technology. The breakwater is very

eective to withstand waves up to 2 metres (6.6 eet) and

waveperiods up to 6 sec. For larger waves we can make a

custom-made design that suits the specifc location con-ditions. Up to 8 metres waveheight can be damped bij

FDN Floating Breakwaters.

For every marina we frst calculate the expected waves and

their height ater which we simulate the waves by compu-

ter and in our research centre. For simulation o the waves

we use 3D deraction simulation programmes.

Structure

The FDN oating breakwater is made o B35 concrete with

reinorcement and a polystyrene core. The solid construc-

tion guarantees little maintenance o the U-block (design

lie 30 years).

Eectiveness

Under normal weather circumstances the U-block will re-

duce the waves up to 100%. In case o storm conditions

the U-block will reduce the waves up to 80 or 90%.

Connections

The connection o the U-block is made o exible rubber

and steel. We designed our own exible connector or this

breakwater and tested it to resist high pressure and tensile

orces up to 300 tons.

Anchorage

The anchorage o the breakwaters can be achieved by piles

or chains / cables with concrete anchor blocks.
