In college, I find that I am more and more in need of a computer. But I

don’t have enough money to buy one. Asking my parents for help is not a

good idea, for it is already a heavy burden for them to support me. I must

earn the money by myself.

One Saturday morning, I went out to look for a job. Having been refused

many times, I finally wandered into a restaurant at 8 p.m. There were already

four candidates in the boss’s office. Obviously, the boss had difficulty in

deciding whom he would employ. He said at last, “Well, I need to check your

references before I can make a decision. I’ve got your telephone numbers

and will call the boy I want. But remember whoever is going to be employed

must be prepared to work here from 6:00 to 8:00 every evening. That’s all.”

That was an ideal time for me though it would take away some of my

free time. Besides, the restaurant wasn’t very far from my university. As I

needed a job badly, I walked up to the boss when the other four left.

Before I could open my mouth, he said, “you’re too late” and turned away.

“But sir, I will do my best. I’m from the countryside and I’m good at

hard work. And I can work two days for free as a trial.”

At these words, the boss turned to me, “I want a boy who not only

works hard but also has clean habits. Remember this is a restaurant. But

look at your hands and clothes!”

a tiring day hunting for a job, I did look terrible. “Oh sir, I’ll keep myself

clean and tidy. I promise I will work very hard, sir, if only you could give me

“All right, all right, I’ll give you a try.”

My heart jumped like mad. I lowered my head and said thankfully,

“Thank you, sir.” Then I thought to myself, “Thank goodness!”

Sentence Translation:

It is not a good solution to ask my parents to give me money. The reason is that it is already very difficult for them to provide me with money and the things I need.

Sentence Paraphrase:

for 引导的从句 it is already a heavy burden for them to support me 解释为什么要父母帮忙并不是一个好办法。通常表示原因的从属连词有 because, for, since, as, now that 等。

because 和 for 很相似,只是 because 的语气较强。

Structural Analysis:

We are worried because / for we are running short of money.

It must have rained last night, because / for the ground is wet.

Sentence Translation:

After I had been denied an offer of job many times, I finally entered a restaurant at 8 p.m. without a definite purpose.

Sentence Paraphrase:

having been refused many times 是一个 -ing分词分句,它在句中作状语,表时间,相当于 after I had been refused many times。 Asking my parents for help is not a good idea…

The dinner (having been) over, each guest was served a

With the tree growing tall, we get more shade.

Sentence Paraphrase:

Looking for a Part-Time Job

Summary Writing

Directions:Read Text B “Summer Jobs,” and write a summary of about 100 words. Note that your summary should include the main ideas of the story. Please pay attention to the use of conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs.

Many students in American colleges do summer jobs during the vacation. They begin to hunt for a job long before the end of the school year and can usually get employed by the end of May. They usually work as typists, salesclerks, lifeguards and waiters. There are also some special jobs such as climbing rangers, park guides and ranch hands. If one works as a climbing ranger, he has two important tasks: checking all the people who want to climb the mountains, and walking around the mountains to offer help when necessary. A park guide works to help tourists to know better about a national park and a ranch hand works on a ranch.

Our group was made up of four students, each having a role in the play. Having decided on the cast, we tried to work out the plot and the lines. We decided to make the plot more dramatic by changing part of the text. When the plot was agreed upon, we were confronted with the most challenging part -- working out the lines. Though having learned English for several years, we still had difficulty in expressing ourselves freely in English. However, we finally managed to complete the lines. When everything was ready, we rehearsed our play several times. Finally, it was time for us to stage our play. To our delight, it was very successful and received great acclaim.

Mingming is a secondary school student. During the summer vacation, he glues himself to the TV set. His glasses show that he has very poor eyesight, which is partly a consequence of watching TV for too many hours. In my view, watching TV all the time does no good to students. It causes poor eyesight, makes a person dull, and wastes our time. As a matter of fact, there are many ways to make our vacation interesting and meaningful. Doing physical exercise is among the best choices. Swimming, playing basketball, playing badminton, all these exercises are easy to do, interesting and beneficial. Joining clubs is another good choice. You may join a reading club or a chess club according to your personal interest. It provides you with an opportunity to make new friends.

On careful consideration of the two choices, I think the job with Taquan Air is a better choice for me. The most important reason is that it offers a chance to tour around Alaska, a place I have been dreaming of. If I could be employed, I would be able to fly around Alaska for free. Another reason is that the pay offered is attractive. Besides, free lodging is provided for a summer employee, which means a reduction of expenses for me. Last but not least, the job itself is quite interesting. To work with tourists has been my ideal job. As a tour coordinator, I would have a great chance to learn things that I can not learn elsewhere. Out of these considerations, I decide to apply for the job.
