Curriculum Content
A. LOC Lesson 9 Reading Practice (2 hours)
Objective BS38.1: Demonstrate proofreading skills through a reading practice in simulated
braille.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with Lesson9which covers initial-letter contractions and the
short-form words for according, always, braille, children, o’clock/oclock, and perhaps.
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will have the students open their LOC Manual to page 9-7 for the Reading
Practice. This Reading Practice will help the students to read simulated braille to another
student. Remind the students that good proofreading skills are imperative to produce clear,
concise braille for the reader.
As a class the students will practice reading braille out loud by taking turns reading each
sentence. This practice helps the students to realize the importance of sight to speech aids
which are very significant in the braille learning process. After each one has read through
the practice they are to write out the sentences in longhand.
This activity also helps the students to learn some valuable proofreading and teamwork
skills. When they are completed they are expected to compare their longhand with the
answers found in Appendix A at the back of the LOC Manual.
ASSESSMENT
The goal of the activity is to build good visual skills of the dot formations, proofreading
skills, and teamwork. The instructor will be able to assess the students work through
listening to the students read and evaluating their papers.
B. LOC Lesson 9 Exercise (2 hours)
Objective BS38.2: Demonstrate usage of computer skills working with Perky Duck for
exercise transcription.
Objective BS38.3: Submission of LOC Lesson 9 Exercise with 90% accuracy.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with the Lesson 9 Exercise on page 9-8.The LOC
Manual: Lesson 9: Exercise is a hands-on test of the students’ knowledge. LOC Manual:

Braille Module 38-5
Lesson 9 Exercise includes the initial-letter contractions and the short-form words for
according, always, braille, children, o’clock/oclock and perhaps and covers the areas
studied in this lesson.
You will need copies of: Exercise 9 (photo copies).
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will pass out the photo copies and read the instructions to the class. Allow
time to answer any questions. Instruct the students to take their time structuring the
photocopy prior to transcription.
The instructor will explain that the Exercise is a list of 46 complete sentences for the
students to braille on Perky Duck.
ASSESSMENT
The expected outcome of the LOC Manual: Lesson 9 Exercise is for students to pass and
continue on to Lesson 10.
The instructor will assess each student by the passing grade. The students are required
to pass this exercise with 90% accuracy.
C. Evaluation by the Instructor (1 hour)
Objective BS38.4: Evaluation by the instructor.
PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
The instructor will be familiar with Lesson 9: Word Puzzle (38.C.1) and the Lesson 9:
Worksheet (38.C.3).
You will need copies of: Lesson 9: Word Puzzle (38.C.1), Answers to Lesson 9: Word Puzzle (38.C.2), Lesson 9: Worksheet (38.C.3) and Answer to Lesson 9: Worksheet (38.C.4).
CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION
The instructor will pass out a Lesson 9: Word Puzzle (38.C.1) and a Lesson 9:
Worksheet (38.C.3) to each student. The students can work on these as the instructor
takes one student at a time to evaluate their progress.
Lesson 9: Word Puzzle (38.C.1) was created to familiarize the students with the
contractions for Lesson. This seek-and-find puzzle uses the braille characters found in this
lesson.
PROFITT Curriculum Module # 38 — LOC Lesson 9 Assessment
Braille Module 38-6
The Lesson 9: Worksheet (38.C.3) was created for the students to practice structuring
and brailling. The instructor will read the instructions to the class.
When the class settles down with the handouts the instructor will take each student aside
to talk about their work, behavior, and review any significant information.
The evaluation allows the instructor the opportunity to assess the areas the students may
have to review in the following weeks for clarification so the students will be able to better
refine their braille skills.

Lesson 9: Worksheet (38.C.3)
Structure and braille this page on Perky Duck. Remember: to center the
heading Mortimer’s Bus Trip.
1. Check which cell your text will start in. Then write that number above the sentence.
2. Highlight all the contractions you will be using that you have learned so far. Write the contraction you will use over the word.
3. Count every cell you will need until you get to the number 40, which is how many cells in a braille line. Remember that some characters will use more than one cell and contractions will use less cells.
PROOFREAD your own work prior to handing it to another student.
Mortimer’s Bus Trip
Everyday a funny character named Mortimer Brighton spent time working at the
phone company. He was from Germany. Mortimer’s mother and father still live there. He
loves to visit but it’s halfway around the world and he cannot afford it. So, he lives alone
in Houghton, Michigan.
One day Mortimer heard that the cherry trees blossomed in Washington, DC. He
had some vacation time and money saved so he decided to visit. The question was
traveling. Should he go by bus or plane? Perhaps he should take the bus. He had never
traveled by bus. So, the next day Mortimer hopped on the bus, never again questioning
his clever decision.
The Spartan bus was a particular partying atmosphere. Mortimer saw many
different characters. Some were commoners. Some were handsome. There were many
grandmothers, grandfathers and youngsters. The children were very coherent but
adhered to the rules of the bus--except Hermione and Gaylord. Whenever their mother
wasn’t looking they cleverly put parts of their body out the windows.
All the bus participants chose to have a luncheonette. Mortimer partook of the fare and ate honey on some fresh baked bread. Someone brought baked flounder and someone else had haddock. According to Grandma Somerset the bus arrived at 1 o’clock in the
afternoon and not once did their spirits get down.

Mortimer also met an ex-prisoner named Wordsworth. He knew the Braille
alphabet and collected abalone pearls. He was never dispirited. Wherever he went he
acknowledged spiritual things. He did not believe in the underworld.
This was quite a trip for Mortimer. A peculiar bus ride, but he never had to look at
the gasometer. He thinks his next trip will be to The Parthenon in Greece.
