Dear Friends, Welcome to our new season. We will be touring our acclaimed 5 Star production of Shakespeare’s masterpiece The Merry Wives of Windsor in July. We are delighted to continue our Supper Club with our friends at The Oddfellows, so why not enjoy a delicious meal before joining us for a performance? As you may know, Cygnet is an independent educational charity which relies on support from our friends to continue our work training actors, staging plays and hosting productions at our theatre in Friars Gate, Exeter. Can you help us?

Join ACT and your membership fee, donation or offer of help will go a long way towards nurturing Cygnet’s work and our talented students.

The Actors Wheel

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot This is a story about choices and consequences and a journey through time and place. A host of historical, fictional and biblical characters gather in a makeshift courtroom in purgatory with Judas at the centre of it all, catatonic with despair and unable to defend himself in a trial that debates the motives of Christianity’s least popular apostle.

‘If betrayal is the ultimate sin, then is forgiveness the ultimate sign of grace?’ Michael Billington (The Guardian)

The Actor’s Wheel is an acting training company based at Plymouth Marjon University; providing degree-level training from industry professionals to guide and inspire the next generation of performers.

An Intervention by Mike Bartlett Director Alistair Ganley

June 14, 20, 22 at 7.30pm

One of them went to the anti-war protest, shouted their lungs out, then got horrendously and staggeringly drunk.

The other stayed at home, watched TV for a bit, and thought about the future.

The political and the personal are inextricably linked in Mike Bartlett’s funny and touching play about what happens when you hate your best friend.

- I don’t believe it - Yes it’s true

- You would support an intervention?

Mike Bartlett is one of UK’s most exciting and innovative writers with his original plays and adaptations performed at RSC, National Theatre, Almeida and Royal Court. HisTV dramas Dr Foster and The Town have been hugely popular.

Boston Marriage by David MametDirector Stephen Copp

June 15, 19, 21 at 7.30pm

Anna is being kept by a married man, but she prefers the company of women.

Claire, Anna’s paramour, has become infatuated with a much younger woman.

Anna’s lover has given her a fabulous emerald which belongs to the mother of Claire’s inamorata...

Mamet’s witty and provocative play gives us his trademark blunt language and scheming characters, set among the Victorian female intellectual set.

David Mamet is an American playwright, film maker and author. He received the Pulitzer Prize and two Tony nominations for his plays Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed the Plow. His most recent play Bitter Wheat, inspired by the Harvey Weinstein scandal is currently playing in London’s West End, starring John Malkovich.

The Merry Wives of WindsorDirector Amanda KnottWilliam Shakespeare’s epic and delightful comedy is a rollicking tale of marriage, fidelity, trickery and love.

The puffed up and degenerate Sir John Falstaff, a Knight of the Garter, is seized with the outrageous idea that to seduce two of Windsor’s wealthy merry wives will prove his virility and give him access to their money, but with female cunning and a devilish plot involving their husbands, Falstaff is repeatedly tricked by the women. Amanda Knott is a regular collaborator with Cygnet, directing Playhouse Creatures and Animal Farm for the Cygnet Company in 2015 and 2017. Formerly Associate Director of Theatre Royal, Plymouth, she is now Director of Creative Cow whose many productions have toured extensively around the UK.

Amanda Knott presents her audience with a thoroughly enjoyable event which I fully intend to watch again. Avril Silk remotegoat

Cygnet Company Cautionary Tales for the World’s Worst Victorian Children

Tales of death, doom and destruction to ensure juvenile propriety & fear! Before David Walliams’ The World’s Worst Children there were plenty of naughty children whose stories needed to be told.

Parents told tales to curb bad behaviour and children listened politely; pondering the likelihood of the stories being true, while relishing the humour, death and destruction.

Join the Cygnet Company for 50 minutes of ghoulish & playful physical storytelling.
