OUR HISTORY

In 1989, a committee of older adults and local service club representatives

worked with the Municipality to establish an activity centre for the older adults

of Clarington. In 1992, Council established an advisory committee, which

became the Clarington Older Adult Centre Committee.

In September 1994, this committee offered a program on Tuesdays at the

Lions’ Centre on Beech Avenue for older adult members. Then a variety of

programs were offered and many fundraising events and special events were

held on significant dates. This “pilot project” continued for four years. The

success proved the necessity for a facility and effective January 2nd, 1998, the

Municipality agreed to purchase the Lions Club property. The Tuesday

programs continued at the Memorial Park Clubhouse during the renovations.

The official opening, open house and dinner/dance celebration was held on

Saturday September 19, 1998. The Clarington Older Adult Association

continued to grow with increased membership and programs, which is a credit

to everyone who has worked so long and hard to achieve the dream of a

centre for the steadily increasing older adult population in Clarington.

After much consideration, the Municipality of Clarington made the decision to

change the structure of older adult programming in the fall of 2015. On

January 4th 2016, the Clarington Beech Centre opened under new

management. The Bowmanville Older Adult Association is a federally

incorporated not for profit organization that continues to provide excellent

programs, services and events to the 55+ population.

TESTIMONIALS

“I looked over your program and it looks amazing!

Can't wait to retire and join your organization!!”Stephanie Kalinsky, Smile Theatre Productions

“May I extend my congratulations on the response your event garnered; what an amazing testament to the

Bowmanville community and the work your organization does. I

live locally, and know the impact of the BOAA, however in

reading the numbers captured in the letter provided from your

Open House, I am sincerely impressed.”Jessica McGeough, VON Durham

“Thank you so much for having me out to such a wonderful event.

Your membership is full of really amazing humans! Was so sweet

to see how well you knew everyone and all the hugs you got.

Such a warm and inviting place.”Anna Gustafson, Comedian, Producer & Speaker

“Wow! You ladies did it again...what a wonderful day yesterday

with another successful fair. Tons and tons of

excited people, great presentations, lots of informative exhibitors,

fun and interactive demonstrations, healthy and delicious food all

day long and lots of fun for everyone. Many thanks for all of your

hard work in the planning and facilitating of another great event. I

truly appreciate all of your support for the fairs and the OACAO.

You have the BEST SENIORS CENTRE IN ALL OF

ONTARIO! Without a doubt.”Shelley Wesselling, OACAO Fairs Coordinator

“Well you did it again!! An amazing evening enjoyed by

all....a great promotion for BOAA and the community

sponsors. I really enjoyed the layout this year, with plenty of

places for people to sit or able to set down their plates. The

addition of the musical artists was great and certainly

'glammed' it up. I know how much work,

mental, emotional and physical, goes into coordinating this

type of an event, so my hat goes off to all of you for your

dedication in all that you do. IT WAS A MAJOR

SUCCESS.”Lynn Relf, BOAA Member

“Brilliant evening! Congratulations on your success with this

new event to BOAA. This event should be taken on the road

for everyone to enjoy all over the country…”Brian Greenway, BOAA Member

"I want to thank you for arranging everything so professionally yesterday at the

BOAA. It was a delightful experience to meet so many of your wonderful

members, all with interesting stories and appreciation for my music over the

years…. please send my thanks to the rest of the staff and team who did such a

lovely job hosting."

Liona Boyd, Musical Artist

“Thanks so much for your ongoing commitment to making the Alzheimer

programs a success. Every time I go to the BOAA I feel that you lay out the ‘red carpet’ for myself and our Alzheimer folks. From printing out our Brain Wave

Café flyers and leaving them on the tables at your lunches, helping with

registration, allowing me to speak at the lunches, setting up a booth in the lobby,

promoting Alzheimer activities, to yesterday’s spontaneous inclusion of our Café members in the square dancing, you are all truly enriching the lives of people

living with dementia and their care partners. Even the square dance caller adapted

the dancing to accommodate our Café members, and made it so fun and easy that

they left feeling very good about themselves and their abilities; something that may

not be a daily occurrence to someone who is experiencing memory loss. When I

initially approached you with the idea to partner with us, I knew the BOAA would

be a great fit, but you have exceeded all expectations. Thanks for making such a

difference.” Laura Clements, Alzheimer Society of Durham Region
