BwN Conceptual design
• ‘Multi objective’ design at conceptual level: “Create landscape designs that serve multiple objectives on a conceptual level.”
Five Steps for Conceptual Design: De Vriend et al (2015) Journal of Hydro-environment Research
The BwN design process
BwN Detailed design
• ‘Single objective’ designs at detailed level: “Per building block determine the required dimensions to achieve predefined design objectives"
Five Steps for Concept Objectification: De Vries et al (2014 – under review) Journal of Environmental Management Status: manuscript to be submitted

Three lessons learned from EcoShape
1. Provide clear incentives to mobilize market creativity o EMVI like incentives may work … but keep it objective o Willingness to pay is an indicator for support
2. Formulate clear objectives to guide the efforts
o A BwN design aims to achieve certain goals – be explicit o Always check if benefits of a measure outwheigh its cost
3. Build with Nature through learning by doing
o Effects (+/-) are not always known … act, monitor and learn o Use pre-competitive collaboration to accelerate innovation
