The much anticipated Rock Creek fire relief benefit fash-ion show took centre stage in Greenwood on Saturday after-noon, and was a resounding success in every way imagine-able.

Chief organizers Cindy Fairs of Habitat for Humanity’s Southeast BC affiliate (HFHSEBC) and Heather Smith, pro-prietor of Greenwood’s iconic Yellow Door Boutique, worked for several weeks to plan and coordinate the event as a way to help rebuild a Westbridge family’s home lost to the Aug. 13 wildfire that destroyed more than 30 structures along the Rock Creek/Westrbridge corridor.

Greenwood’s McArthur Centre was filled to capacity with over 200 people looking to make a donation to the re-building effort while enjoying the efforts of local clothing designers and retailers during what was a very polished yet light-hearted fashion presentation. Fashions were provided by Xenja Wear, Pharmasave, The Yellow Door and Chain Reaction and included smart casual and sportswear, worn by a roster of volunteer models ranging in ages from early 20s to 70s.

The benefit also featured a silent auction, which saw the sale of hundreds of donated items ranging from hotel stays to fancy cheese baskets, contribute a sizeable chunk of the nearly $10,000 collected during the afternoon. The Fun Spot

Quote of the Week:A great many people think they are thinking when they are really rearranging their prejudices.– William James (1842 - 1910)

Joke of the Week:“You seem to have more than the average share of intelligence for a man of your background,” sneered the lawyer at a witness on the stand. “If I wasn’t under oath, I’d return the compliment,” replied the witness.

The final numbers for the 2015 fall fair are in, and the Rock Creek and Boundary Fair Association (RCBFA) is report-ing a 12-per-cent drop in rev-enue over last year’s fair.

Fair treasurer Lisa Sims said that $2,335.00 was collected in the Fire Donation Bucket and turned over to the Kettle River Lions Club Fire Relief Fund.  They partnered with the RCB-FA on building the gatehouse so the RCBFA partnered with them on this cause.  This in-cludes $70 that exhibitors won and requested that their win-nings be donated to the fire fund.”

Prize money totaling $15,792.50 was paid out to ex-hibitors and competitors in-cluding approximately $1,450 to local 4-H club competitors in beef, sheep, clothing and ranch horse categories.

Five local non-profit organi-zations—including Kettle River Lions Club, Bridesville Com-

munity Club, Boundary Dis-trict Curling Club, Grand Forks Rotary Club and King of Kings Church—grossed $32,400 in sales.

A total of $2,148.75 was made from the 50/50 draws. The RCBFA membership voted to spend this years 50/50 funds on purchasing new lightweight banquet tables to be used by various groups renting the fa-cilities (currently we have very heavy wooden banquet tables that can make movement and set up difficult).

The Boundary Central Sec-ondary School graduating class received $750 in exchange for help during work bees and fair weekend.  They also ran the cow plop bingo as a fundraiser.

The West Boundary Elemen-tary School ran the Bingo as a fundraiser.

In 2014 there was a total of 8,610 paid attendees; this year saw that figure drop by more than 12 per cent to 7,543. In terms of revenue, this equates to a decrease in gate revenue

of approximately $11,261.41. A direct result of this is a drop in food vendor revenue of 9.6 per cent or $2005.74.

There was also a decline in commercial vendor revenue of 10.4 per cent or $1,364.75 and a drop in camping revenue of 16.3 perc ent or $1,494.57.

Overall, fair weekend saw a drop of 12 per cent or $16,292.22 in revenue. This may not seem significant; however, this represents approximately 16 per cent of the fair’s annual operating budget to manage and maintain the fair grounds and facilities.

This year’s operating budget was $99,800 or, in other words, it costs approximately $273 per day to operate and maintain the grounds and facilities, not in-cluding fair weekend.

This drop in revenue may af-fect the RCBFA’s ability to carry out special projects next year unless additional funds are se-cured through grants or other fundraising avenues.

Habitat for Humanity South-east BC has been busy raising and coordinating donations in support of the rebuilding efforts for those people affected by the August Rock Creek wildfires.

The Boundary community’s people and businesses have ral-lied to assist the many who have lost not only their homes but also livelihoods and a way of life. Their swift response to the

disaster has helped to alleviate the burden and stress placed on the families who are trying to prepare for the coming of win-ter.

On Friday, Oct. 30, Rick Fri-esen and Bob Huff, with Habitat for Humanity, picked up a do-nation of insulation from the Roxul plant in Grand Forks.

The donation was enough to insulate the outbuildings (pump houses and animal shel-ters) that are being built by the

Fire Needs Committee volun-teers. The boundary commu-nities and Habitat for Human-ity have always had incredible support from Roxul, and once again they have responded with a timely and generous donation.

You can find out more about how to get involved by calling Bob Huff, at 250-442-2722 or email [email protected].

Habitat for Humanity South-east BC is a tax-exempt non-profit organization.

I have to admit that I was feeling a little trepidatious when I set off on Saturday afternoon to cover the benefit fashion show slated for the McArthur Centre in Green-wood.

I could but applaud the organizers’ boldness in hold-ing such a “highbrow” event in a region renowned more for cowboy boots than well-heeled fashionis-tas and streets populated by uber-slim model types dressed in skin tight spandex, but I was genuinely concerned that a fashion show sim-ply would not attract enough interest to make it successful.

When I pulled up outside the McArthur Centre, however, my doubt was immediately erased. Parking spaces were at a premium, and there was a steady flow of patrons through the hall’s doors, which weren’t actually scheduled to open for another 15 minutes. Once inside, I was hit by a buzz of energy I honestly had not experienced since leav-ing the city; the conversation was loud and lively, the bev-erages were flowing and the anticipation could be cut with a knife.

There were volunteers sharply attired in black-and-white, elegantly-dressed tables full of donated auction items, appetizers, both savoury and sweet laid out for all to enjoy, and then there was the stage.

A real fashion runway had been cleverly crafted from plywood risers and vertical panels, erected to hide the models as they moved from one outfit to the next, and the whole setup was professionally-lit and simply looked great!

I was very impressed, and pleased that I was covering the event, which, in my eyes at least, made everyone that attended feel special.

The fashion show itself was high energy and lots of fun, and the clothing impressive as well. I loved the fact that the model entourage was an eclectic group, ranging from lithe twentysomethings who mimicked the cat walkers of high fashion shows perfectly, to more mature, sophisticated la-dies who genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves.

All in all, a very special afternoon, and one which will go a long way to ensuring that a fire-ravaged Westbridge family will have a new house to call home in the not so distant future. Congratulations to the organizers, and I’m sure all of the show’s attendees would agree with me when I say, “Let’s do it again next year!”

~~~I’m glad to hear that some of the proceeds
from the upcoming Rock Creek Craft Fair are earmarked to go towards the refurbishment of the Bridesville community hall’s washrooms and kitchen, something that has been a long time coming. Frankly, it’s a little off-putting climbing down that steep set of stairs to a decid-edly rank basement and its dingy bathrooms. I am by no means a snob, but heck, sometimes I’ve felt certain there was somebody or some-
thing lurking in the shadows waiting to do the nasty to me. I love what the hall represents to the community, but
it’s time for a facelift, and I truly hope that those running the Bridesville Community Club will do it right and make the once vaunted building a pleasure to enter rather than a challenge. And yes, I am willing to volunteer some time and energy to the project, as long it doesn’t concern the following: plumbing, wiring, framing, painting, door-hanging, appliance installation, lighting design, flooring or cleaning of any type. Other than that, I’m at your service!
~~~On the same day this newspaper and other media out-

lets were reporting that Mt. Baldy ski resort would be opening for the season, I received a press release from rep-resentatives of the resort’s receivers stating that the group’s bid to purchase the resort had not been successful after all, and that the hill may, in fact, not be opening as promised.

The prospective purchasers’ website is no longer provid-ing daily updates regarding their proposed purchase of the resort, though I’m sure I will hear the outcome at some point in the next few weeks. If I hear anything I’ll let you know!

Greenwood gets glitzy

One of the latest trends to grip the teenage popu-lation is the use of e-cigarettes, commonly known as “vapes”, and experts are warning that, despite manu-facturers’ insistence that the devices are considerably less harmful than their tobacco counterparts, users could be putting their short and long term health in serious jeopardy.

Vapes are simply an electronic nicotine delivery system about the size of a large cigar, made up of three components: a liquid cartridge, a rechargeable bat-tery and a heating element (atomizer) that heats a fla-voured liquid, which may or may not contain nicotine. The heat turns the liquid into a vapor which is, in turn, inhaled.

Vaping may sound innocuous, but is it? As in most health-related matters, there are two sides to this story.

Invented in China in the early 2000’s as an alterna-tive to tobacco smoking, vapes didn’t reach the North American market until a few years later, but when they did, vaping quickly became not just a smoking cessa-tion practice, but also grabbed the attention of teen-agers, constantly on the look out for the next “cool” trend. Manufacturers of the e-tobacco have been devi-ous in lacing the often nicotine-infused vaping liquids with sweetly scented and tasty additives, making vap-ing much more attractive and, in some experts’ eyes, equally as addictive as traditional cigarettes. While some argue that there is no proof of the harm such devices and liquids can cause, many medical experts are convinced that vaping is going to be just as large a health issue than tobacco consumption, and want Health Canada to move quickly to put firm regula-tions in place.

Schools look down at the practice, but most don’t police it, instead asking the users for discretion. They would also like to see some education about vaping forthcoming for students, some whom which see it as a healthier alternative to smoking.

Education and regulation appear to be the key here, though who knows if it will make a difference to the trend which may end up becoming a serious health detriment in the years ahead.

Let’s hope Health Canada does the right thing soon and moves to regulate vapes and their juices, ideally with as much stiffness as they do tobacco sales.

It’s not smoking, it’s vaping!

In last week’s issue it was reported that the City of Greenwood had donated the space for the benefit fashion show held last weekend at the McArthur Centre. It was in fact the Greenwood Community Association, which leases and maintains the facility, that donated the space to show organizers.

Also, In a previous issue, we mistakenly referred to Doreen MacLean as President of the Greenwood Im-provement Society. The group currently does not have a president, so the acting head is Ciel Sander.

The Times would like to apologize for the errors.

“Is God Enough?”

Something like the above —— so I can change the date and the title each time…. For the 2nd and 4th Sundays (twice a month for the year)

Sunday, November 156:00 - 7:00 pm

Bridesville Community Hall

Dreams hits the stageRiver of Dreams, a show created through a col-

laboration of five young actors of Midway’s small theatre company with Nelson’s Allegro Dance, will be presenting their show on Saturday, Nov. 14 in the Midway Community Hall.

The production, a celebration in spoken word and dance, celebrates the sheer wonder of water, especially water flowing in free-running rivers. After two highly successful shows in Nelson it’s

time for the group to display their efforts for our local audience.

And why not? Don’t we reside near one of the most beautiful rivers in B.C.? A river so many people living here have both respected and ad-mired all their lives?

There will be one show only. Tickets are lim-ited to 100, so phone (250-449-2345) and reserve your seat or purchase one directly from Midway’s The Spot.

This year’s regional Christmas songbook will feature beloved holiday recipes along with carols and Black Press is hoping you have a favourite dish to share.

Whether it’s eggnog, apple cruller or ginger-bread you’re most excited about, we’re hoping you’ll share your passion and your family’s secret recipes.

Last published in 2012, the songbook will fea-

ture old Christmas favourites such as “Away in a Manger” and “Deck the Halls,” with both music and lyrics printed for carollers to use year after year.

To contribute to this year’s Christmas song-book please send your recipes, including photos if you have them, to Jennifer Cowan at [email protected].

Chargerready for electric carsWhat may appear to be a gas pump from a bygone era is, in fact a brand new electric car battery charging station located outside the Kettle River Museum in Midway. PEOPLE WHO READ

NEWSPAPERS AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE

MONEY HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON.

Newspaper ads, both print and online, play a key role in helping people make their banking and investment decisions.

Newspapers and their sites outperform all other media in engaging Canadians, including high-income Canadians, boomers, moms and even young adults.

All of which makes advertising in newspapers a very smart move.

What you call JUNK could be someone’s TREASURE.

CBT rep speaks to RDKBThe Regional District of the Kootenay

Boundary (RDKB) board of directors met in Grand Forks on Oct. 29 for their regu-lar monthly board meeting. The board heard a presentation from Neil Muth, CEO of Columbia Basin Trust, who gave an overview of the trust’s current initia-tives and future plans. After hearing from Muth, the board discusses a number of different issues pertaining to the region. Board receives th anks

The RDKB board of directors received a letter from Mike Fairweather, chair of the Christina Lake Waterfront Property Owner’s Society, thanking the RDKB for its work in hosting meetings and provid-ing information through the RDKB web-site concerning the risk to persons and property from the wildfires from Wash-ington State and southeast B.C. this past summer.

The group asked the board to pass on thanks to the American and Canadian fire-fighters who were actively involved in help-ing to control fires from the Kettle River (Stickpin) complex and the fire on High-way 3 on the lower portion of the Paulson Summit that briefly closed Highway 3. No booze in RDKB fire halls

The RDKB board of directors ap-proved a policy for alcohol in RDKB fire halls and a staff recognition policy. The policy states that no alcoholic beverages will be allowed in any RDKB fire hall, except for specific circumstances as out-lined in the policy. Staff recognition

The board also approved a policy for employee recognition. The staff recogni-tion policy recognizes RDKB employees for extended periods of service to the re-gional district as well as on retirement or recognition. Public hearing min-utes presented

The minutes of the public hearing for the RDKB zoning amend-ment bylaw No. 1579 were presented. The amendment would amend electoral Area D/Rural Grand Forks zoning bylaw No. 1299.

At the public hear-ing, RDKB planner Carly Rimell provided a summary of the pro-posed zoning amend-ment for 3250 6th West Road to rezone

the subject property from Industrial 4 to Estate Lot Residential 3 within Area D/Rural Grand Forks zoning bylaw No. 1299 from 2005

During the bylaws section, the board adopted the amendment. The property being rezoned (Lot 3, DL 700, SDYD, Plan KAP38) will moved from the current In-dustrial 4 to Estate Lot Residential 3. Rock Creek Medical marihuana

The RDKB board received a staff re-port from Rimell regarding the notifi-cation submitted by M&J Orchards to establish a medical marihuana facility on the property in elec-toral Area E/West Boundary, off Myers Creek Road, east of Rock Creek. Notifying local governments as well as local police and fire authority, is the first step to securing a licence to produce from Health Canada. Health Canada requires that the local government not have any objections to the location of a Medical Marihuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) Facility. Grant-in-Aid funding

Several grant-in-aid appli-cations were approved at the RDKB meeting. Christina Lake Fire Fighters’ Society received $1,500 for their Halloween fireworks; Grand Forks and Boundary Regional Agricul-tural Society received $500 to offset insurance costs; and the Grand Forks Rotary Club re-ceived $1,500 for their Hallow-een fireworks. Bylaws

The RDKB board passed first and second reading for an amendment to the Area C/

Christina Lake Official Community Plan bylaw. The amendments deal with mul-tiple family residential permits.  Public hearing scheduled

The board approved a recommenda-tion from staff to schedule public hear-ings for the RDKB Official Community Plan amendment bylaws 1585 and 1586, 2015 (amending Area C/Christina Lake Official Community Plan bylaws 1250 and 1300). Director McGregor was ap-pointed to attend with directors Roly Russell and Vicki Gee.

much of their time and expertise to make it work. “Without the tireless efforts of our volunteers,

the show simply would not have been possible,” said Fairs. “Big thanks must go out to MC Bob Dupee, Heather Smith, stage manager Ted Invictus, silent auction coordinator Laurie Grant, food manager Irene Friesen and Lorraine Dick, who handled the PowerPoint presentation.”

“Additionally, we owe many thanks to the models that braved the runway, as well as Peri Best, Vivien Browne and Jim Ruho for providing some beautiful classical music to begin the afternoon’s festivities.”

Also in attendance were local politicians Linda Larson, Grace McGregor, Vicki Gee, Marguerite Rotvold and Ed Smith, as well as HFHSEBC’s ex-ecutive chairperson Eleanore Martens and execu-tive director Bob Huff. Huff has been overseeing the Winn rebuild project and is thrilled by the event’s contribution to that project.

“The benefit raised more money than any pre-vious fundraiser undertaken by HFHSEBC,” said Huff, “and the funds will greatly advance the re-building effort.”

“I’d like to thank all of the people who donated to the event, as well as those who attended. Without their efforts, it simply would not have been possible.”
