Let’s start with an obvious but important question. What is an RRSP? You may know that RRSP stands for Registered Retirement Savings Plan. But it’s easy to be confused about what that really means.

If you think you buy an RRSP, you wouldn’t be the first person to make that mistake. Actually, you buy investments – mutual funds, stocks, bonds, guaranteed investment certificates, annuities, etc. – and register them with the federal government. When you retire, you’ll be able to use the money that comes from the investments.

Is it a good idea to invest in an RRSP?The simple answer is yes. Many people are putting their money in

RRSPs because they’ve been told they can reduce the amount of income tax they pay. They think, “Okay, I’m getting this tax savings every year. It reduces my taxable income, so my overall taxes aren’t going to be as high.” For a lot of people, that’s a good enough reason to contribute to an RRSP. Paying less income tax has always been a good idea.

If you’re self-employed, you have another reason to invest in an RRSP. It may be the only way to save for retirement, since you probably aren’t working at a company that sets up pension plans for its employees.

Whatever your reasons, the most important thing you can do as far as investing in RRSPs is concerned is to start contributing regularly as early as possible. When you start early, you give your money more time to grow.

Let’s say you’re 45 years old and put $100 dollars into RRSP investments every month. We’ll assume a return of 6% per year. At age 65, the total value of your investment would be $45, 344. Now, if you’re 25 years old and invest the same monthly amount with the same return, the total value of your RRSP at 65 would be $190,768. You can see how the extra two decades of investing makes a big difference.

Perhaps you’re thinking that you don’t have $100 to put away every month. Try investing in small doses by setting up a plan where your contributions flow directly from your bank account to your RRSP on the day you’re paid. A few dollars now will go a long way later. You’ll be surprised at how quickly your RRSP will grow – if you contribute regularly!

Think about borrowing money to invest in your RRSP. At today’s low interest rates this can be a very effective strategy. You will reduce your taxable income and may increase your tax refund. Many people then take that refund and use it to help pay off their loans. Ask your advisor if this approach makes sense for you.

Remember: the best thing you can do for your retirement fund is to put away the maximum amount allowed by the government. If you’re short, you can take out a “catch-up” loan. Or, you can carry forward your unused contribution to a future year.

To keep track of all your assets, you may want to consider keeping them in one investment company. There are distinct advantages to this strategy. You’ll receive more effective advice because your advisor has access to your full financial picture. And you’ll be able to see all or most of your investments by looking at one statement.

Nobody’s financial situation will be exactly the same as yours. That’s why your financial strategy should reflect your needs, desires, and goals. Professional money managers can help because they understand the complexities of the market. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from the pros!

Marshall speaks to FAR

Boundary-based forestry expert Fred Marshall joined members of the Food and Resources Society on Jan. 30 to talk about forest-related matters and other subjects.

Part two of a two-part series e West Boundary Food

and Resources Society wel-comed local forest expert Fred Marshall to its Jan. 30 meeting at the Rock Creek Health Cen-tre to provide members with an overview of the Boundary tim-ber supply area and its impor-tance as not only an economic driver, but also a vital player in the area’s ecosystem.

“I am a forester, so lumber is good,” Marshall said, “but it’s important to recognize that our forests are not only a source of timber but are also home to many creatures, signi cant rec-reational areas and many other things.”

Marshall identi ed the Boundary’s primary economic drivers as forestry, tourism, ag-riculture (including cattle and ornamental nurseries such as Hansinger’s and Stewart Broth-ers), mining and government services. He noted the fact that, while there are nurseries that employ hundreds of people to produce plants and owers, not nearly the same attention is paid to food production, which, Marshall suggested, may change if the price of food continues to climb.

Marshall went on to outline the distribution of timber har-vesting rights, noting that Wey-erhauser and Interfor own the rights to 56 per cent of the al-lowable annual cut (ACC) in the Boundary.

He also described how the West Boundary (Midway/Greenw wod) community for-est works, by the hiring of in-dependent contractors to plan the layout of the logging area

and harvest the timber, which is subsequently sold to mills such as Vaagen Fibre, as well as high-lighting the existence of 34 pri-vate woodlot licences. ese al-low areas of private or leased land up to 1,200 hectares to be logged.

Marshall himself is the holder of one such licence. He listed the area’s major sawmills and buyers of bre as Interfor, Vaagen Fibre, Son Ranch, John Lindquist, Ed Carson and one at Christina Lake ere are also other smaller operators scat-tered throughout the region, in addition to several buyers from outside the Boundary, including Gorman’s, Kalesniko and Zell-o , illustrating not only the size of the forestry industry in the area, but also the fact that many operators are family owned, which bodes well for the health of the industry.

 at said, Marshall did la-ment the fact that the provincial government clearly supports the continued expansion of the larger players such as Interfor, making it more di cult for the smaller operations, including

trucking companies, to remain competitive.

“I’d like to see 50 per cent of the lumber harvested in the Boundary stay in the Boundary,” Marshall said. “ e forests here belong to us and it is we who should be reaping the bene ts of this valuable resource.”

Several members of the audi-ence o ered their own observa-tions about environmentalism in general, including Terry Jack-son, who described his recent eye-opening experience driving through Texas on his way home from Mexico. “Parts of the state looked like an industrial waste-land and the same applied to Southern Nevada, “Jackson said.

 e audience in general felt that British Columbia could be doing a better job with the en-vironment.

Marshall concluded by sug-gesting the forest needs more constructive management and that the province and its leg-islation should be viewing the industry with communities in mind as opposed to large corpo-rations.

Letters Policy

Is it really possible that come next January, the world could be referring to “The Donald” as President Donald Trump? The general consensus is this country is that our neighbours to the south will come to their senses by No-vember and choose Hilary Clinton as their first female head of state, sending Trump back to his ivory tower once and for all.

But wait a minute; didn’t those same American citizens give George W. Bush two terms as Ppresident? Yes, he of the “Dubya” moniker, a somewhat bumbling excuse for a world statesman who, reportedly, upon learning that the World Trade Centre twin towers had just been flown into by commercial airlines, hardly flinched, instead turning back to the second grade class he was visiting that day to rejoin the students in the reading of The Pet Goat. Make of that what you will.

But this is not a time for reflection; more so, it is an opportunity to observe with interest the na-tion which refers to its president as “the leader of the free world” grapple with its two-party political system, which appears poised to force Americans to make an historic choice by electing either the nation’s first-ever female lead-er or its first billionaire president.

If life were fair, Hilary Clinton would be assured a move into the White House next January to begin a successful eight years in office, alongside husband Bill, who ironical-ly, would become the nation’s very first “first gentleman.” It is simply too difficult to imagine Trump’s swept-away hair-do gracing the world’s political stage, discussing cli-mate crisis and food shortages with other world leaders, all the while keeping an eye on his myriad of investments

and real estate holdings. I suppose there’s nothing ethically wrong with a U.S.

president being wealthy beyond most people’s imagina-tion; after all, the Bush’s are no paupers, and the Clintons’ lifestyle isn’t bad either, but it just seems imbalanced for an uber-rich business tycoon to be representing the demo-cratic ideals of a nation built on equality.

So how on earth is Trump managing to woo so much support, both from primary delegates and the general public? Could it be that people are finding his blunt honesty, which occasionally has bordered on racism, strangely refreshing in this era of political correctness? Trump does not appear to be concerned at all with putting his foot in his bellicose mouth, and neither, it appears, does the American public.

What was initially considered an amusing sideshow destined to tumble into the history books alongside Ross Perot’s failed campaign

in 1992, Trump’s juggernaut shows no signs of stalling, and it does indeed appear that Americans will face a very difficult decision come Nov. 8.

~~~ On the lighter side, there was a new arrival in the Tripp
household a couple of weeks back in the form of Miles, a border collie/kelpi/blue healer cross puppy, full of spunk and ready to make his way in the world.
He has faced the challenges presented by our three oth-er dogs with nothing but blind courage, willing to repeat-edly suffer the bared fangs and guttural growls of his new housemates. Puppies are a study in perseverance and can teach us much about life, or, at the very least, how to take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’.
Juggernaut showing no signs of stalling
The desire to “eat locally” continues to intensify in these food-challenged times. With the recent price of imported cauliflower “blooming” to a staggering $10 in some markets, the time-honoured practice of stor-ing enough classic root vegetables to last a family the entire winter does nothing but increase in popularity, particularly in rural areas. Add to that the new wave greenhouse “indoor gardens” which can produce greens on a consistent cycle, and one can enjoy fresh produce all year round without having to rely on a grocery giant.
According to researchers, the average Canadian meal travels 2,400 kilometres to get from field to plate and contains ingredients from five countries in addi-tion to our own. That makes for a lot of “food miles,” a term coined in 1994 by Britain’s SUSTAIN organi-zation. Over the past 20 years in North America, the import and export of food have tripled and, combined with other agricultural products, now account for more than a quarter of the goods transported on our roads. Food is now also the largest component of air-freight, which is the most polluting form of transpor-tation. How does this affect the “bottom line,” i.e. the environmental damage that is wrought by the simple delivery of Californian cantaloupes, Mexican cucum-bers and Hawaiian pineapples ?
When food is transported lengthy distances, much fossil fuel is burnt, creating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This emits a variety of toxic chemicals that contribute to air pollution, acid rain and climate change. What about the distance local food travels?
Studies have shown that local food distribution sys-tems can reduce environmental impacts significantly, as opposed to conventional truck-delivered food sys-tems which can be four to 17 times more damaging to our environment. A study by Toronto’s Food Share found that a meal produced with ingredients from a local farmers’ market travelled a total of 101 kilome-tres while an average imported meal travelled 5,364 kilometres, creating 100 times more GHGs than the farmers’ market meal.
All of this makes buying locally the smart and pru-dent thing to do, and that extends to the meat market as well. Countless urbanites and their rural neigh-bours are driven by a need to know the exact source of their lamb, beef, chicken and pork, and are willing to pay higher than market-price for their animal protein.
Such is the value of local trade, be it in food, product or services, and the Boundary is a prime example of a region in which it makes sense in so many ways.
It’s smart to buy local
A new way to communicatePresentation
Hutton Elementary teachers Tammy Jacobs and Keira Angus spoke to the board of trustees at the regular board meeting oof School District 51 on Feb. 9 to talk about a new and exciting method for teachers to communicate with par-ents.
The pair has began to use a phone/tablet app called FreshGrade to show weekly updates of students’ progress with their parents. Both say it’s a great way to send a “snapshot” of a child’s day at school so parents can easily discuss how the child’s day went.
Kevin Argue, SD51 superintendent of schools, said that there are a few other teachers in the district using the app but Jacobs and Angus are the most experi-enced.
“It’s a choice they’re making to use it,” he said. “It can be used just to com-municate to parents; it can be used to just put your marks in and those can be shared with parents; and it can be used as a portfolio, where a student is videoed reading at their level, for example, and that is shared with the parent. It gets posted like on Facebook but only the
parent can see it.”
Syrian refugees The school board re-
ceived a letter from Ben-jamin Jepsen regarding a committee he is on that is working to-ward getting a Syrian refugee family to Grand Forks. Jepsen said it would be a massive endearvour and would take the entire community to get behind it. He added that the committee is looking at different options to get one or more families to Grand Forks.
Argue said that at this point, the group is just looking at options regard-ing bringing a Syrian refugee family but nothing is confirmed yet that there will be. “We have some resources from the Ministry of Education on how to best do this,” he said. Amended budget bylaw
The board unanimously passed final reading of the Amended Annual Bud-get Bylaw. Total operating revenue for SD51 for the year ending June 30, 2016 is $15,456,221 with most coming from provincial grants from the Ministry of Education ($15,235,540).
The total expenses in the budget are $15,798,221 with $12,091,562 coming from instruction.
Video surveillance The board of trustees
voted in favour of adopt-ing a policy to allow for video surveillance on the
exterior of school district properties for the reason of deterring acts of vandal-ism, crime, and inappropriate behav-iour, and to enhance student safety. Public use of school facilities
The board approved and adopted policy No. 2060 - Public Use of School Facilities. The policy applies to all rentals of school district facilities except those for which the school board has entered into a separate joint use agreement.
The policy states that: 1. The school board’s first consideration for school fa-cilities is to meet the needs of students and school programs…; 2. The board agrees, however, that school facilities should be used as extensively as possi-ble by community/public organizations and other groups when not required for district educational programs. Prefer-ence will be given to activities for edu-cational, cultural or recreational value and to children’s groups. The policy also includes recommendations for schedule of fees and priorities for use.
Members of the Boundary C 4H Club met for the second time on Feb. 4.
The dates were set for this year’s speeches, with the nine-year-old mem-bers speaking at the March 3 meeting and all other members on March 9 at the Rock Creek Fairgrounds.
Also during the meeting, commit-tees were formed to help organize club
activities throughout the year, including the Cattle Baron’s Ball on April 9, budget planning and marketing.
Ranch Horse members have had two opportunities to get together this year. The first was a ride from Fossen Ranch on Jan. 23 and the next was to check cows, practice roping and share a meal together on Feb. 11. A similar evening is planned for Feb. 18.
Beef members are working with their projects and sheep members will be
starting lamb projects later in the spring as lambs are not yet born.
Sewing members who started their projects in early December 2015 are working on them and should be com-pleted on April 3.
All other members received their re-cord books at the last meeting and are working on speeches and planning for educational displays, demonstrations or speak and shows to be presented at Rally Day in May.
Members of the Midway Volun-teer Fire Department would like to extend their sincerest thanks to ev-eryone who attended and supported the New Years Celebration (Mardi Gras Gala) again this year.
The festivities were once again fully sponsored by Doug and Jackie “Jolley” McMynn, and their gener-osity provided an outstanding eve-ning for all attendees. The evening was a group effort once again led by Jolley and Tia with decoration, John and Tasha Ho and Linda Demchuk preparing an incredible meal and Midway Fire members doing the set up and clean up. We simply cannot thank all of you enough for your generosity and the hours of hard work you put into making this event such a huge success.
The event was also intended to assist Midway Volunteer Fire De-partment in raising funds. Along with everything else they provided towards the event, Doug and Jolley did not stop there. They presented Midway Volunteer Fire Department with an additional cheque for $1500 based on compensation ‘profi t’ they had received for provision of meals to the fi re fi ghters during the Rock Creek Fire. They opted not to keep any profi t and pass along that money to the fi re department. A most gener-
ous and philanthropic gesture which is so appreciated!
We also would like to thank all of our benevolent donors who support-ed out efforts by providing over 100 door prizes and raffl e items for the event. While we have excellent sup-port locally, the hard work of mem-bers Jennifer Agar and Matt Balch extended beyond the reaches of the Boundary to outside area businesses who knew about the fi res and were very giving, gladly contributing to the efforts.
The comments and feedback we received from attendees regarding every aspect of the New Years Gala were stellar. Big hearted sponsors, outstanding food, awesome priz-es and raffl es, great music, and an “only in the Boundary’ atmosphere made this New Years Eve a night to remember!
With our sincerest THANK YOU to all from the Midway Volunteer Fire Department membership, we acknowledge our charitable spon-sors… Have a happy, healthy and safe 2016!
Ponderosa Arts and Music Festival founders Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi have announced that, while last August’s Rock Creek fire caused the cancellation of their third installment, the festival will re-turn in 2016, scheduled for Aug. 19-21 at the Rock Creek fairgrounds.
The 2015 festival, called off due to safety concerns just two days before it was set to begin, was hit hard by the cancella-tion. Hargrave and Zahrabi, however, are “rallying for Rock Creek” and bringing the three days of music, art, camping, and freshness back for another year.
“Last year’s cancellation was difficult to say the least, but it has motivated us to come back even stronger this year,” Zah-rabi said. “Quality music, chill vibes, awe-some value, maximum freshness-that’s what Ponderosa is, and this year our fans have an added opportunity to directly help a community that was hit by the worst forest fire in over 30 years.”
The two also continue to ensure that the event benefits and supports the com-munity of Rock Creek as much moving forward as they have in the past. The donations from November’s “Let’s Build A House!” fundraiser at the Imperial in Vancouver will help build a new home this spring in Westbridge for the Winn family. In addition, a portion of each tick-et sold for the 2016 festival will be donat-ed to Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC, one of the organizations spearheading the rebuilding efforts.
“People are always asking us how they can help, and well, this is it,” said Zahrabi. “By purchasing tickets early, people not only secure their three days of music and sun for an unbeatable price, they also help give the festival the boost it needs to stay afloat while donating funds directly to the rebuild efforts in the community. It’s a win, win, win.”
The full list of performing acts will be announced this spring. For more infor-mation, visit the festival’s website: pon-derosafestival.com.
Great victory for British
Chronicles of Boundary Country from the pages of The Boundary Creek Times Volume VII, No. 9 – November 11, 1899
➤ C.P.R. Magnates Arrive in the Boundary – “The C.P.R. officials from the president, T.G. Shaughnessy, on down, came and saw Greenwood and went away satisfied that it was by long odds the liveliest, most enterprising city and the commercial and mining center of the Boundary district. A special train brought in this valuable cargo on Wednesday eve-ning.
“Had one of the big trestles given way or a flaw cropped up in any of the rock cuts along the way, it would be impossible to imagine what might have happened to the C.P.R., be-cause on board were nearly all the men and brains that so successfully conduct its enormous operations.”
➤ Is the Honeymoon Over Already? – The following editorial was printed in the week after the “magnates” left town: “The attention of the proper authorities is directed to the great annoyance caused our citizens by the incessant tooting of railway whistles and the unmusical clang-ing of railway bells.
“The people have rights as well as rail-way companies. It is too bad that their peace should be disturbed by the noise and bustle of a railway.”
➤ For Sale: Folding Bath Tubs – “R.J. Moffatt of New Westminster is in the city.
He is agent for several health specialties, including the Quaker folding bath cabi-net. Mr. Moffatt will be pleased to meet people desirous of securing the bath cabi-net. In a place like Greenwood, where fa-cilities for baths are not the best, the bath cabinet will prove a great boon. This is particularly true, since the cost is only $8.”
➤ Boer War – This edition of the newspaper included a large update to the fighting in South Africa. The fol-lowing is a small portion of that information: “Dis-patch from Capetown says an encounter at Ladysmith resulted in a great victory for the British who cap-tured nearly 2,000 Boers. Yesterday’s dispatches dis-proved the continental story that Ladysmith had
fallen. The cheery tone of the dispatches shows no anxiety as regards the ability of the garrison to hold its own.
“The movements of Capetown Boers awaken fears that the British have un-derestimated the forces to be met. Pieter-maritzburg is still safe.”
➤ Phoenix, the Next Rossland? – The owners of the townsite of Phoenix are advertising lots for sale in what they call “The Coming Rossland of the Boundary”. Its location is in the “centre of six of the most prominent mines in the Bound-ary – 250 feet from the Brooklyn mine, and one-half mile from the Ironsides and Knob Hill mines. And plenty of pure wa-ter from a lake on the property. Buy now. Prices right. Easy terms.”
New members join library boardA new year, and with it
came our annual general meeting, held at the library on Jan. 26.
We elected several new members to the board: Gerri Hollett, Diane Lapalme, Mariette Jacob, Virginia Holmes and Dave Evans. These, along with returning members Ann Mudrie, Debra Brownhill, Lynne Klaver, and Shawn Whitelegg, will give us a full complement of nine.
Thanks to all who turned out and sup-ported us by their attendance at the meet-
ing.Thanks to The Green-
wood Improvement Society, we have a new computer at the front cir-culation desk.
Now we’ll have one exclusive-ly for use in checking items in and out, and one for the librarians’ use in doing email, cataloguing items, processing interlibrary loans, and word processing.
This will make it so much easier when we have a volunteer checking things in and out while the librarian is working on the other computer. Thank you, TGIS!
This week you may notice a Bakeless Bake Sale flyer in your mail-box. This is an annual fundraiser we hold, to give people who other-wise might not be aware of the library, its ser-vices, and its needs, an opportunity to make a contribution.
If you do not receive
unsolicited ad mail in your box, you won’t have received this flyer either, so we have some available in the library for those who are interested. And we thank everyone in
advance for your support of your commu-nity’s library—donations are an important portion of our annual revenue.
Katherine Delisle holds a handmade thank you card from the Rock Creek Fair Association. Delisle chose not to run again for the association’s board of directors, though will be staying on as an active member. Several weeks earlier Delisle was presented with a 25-year leadership certificate for her service with the Borderline 4-H Lamb Club. She was also the winner of the 2015 Rock Creek Fall Fair lamb carcass division.
Katherine Delisle of the Borderline 4-H Lamb Club was honoured with a 25-year leadership certificate at the club’s award night in December.
Delisle has been the head and project leader of the club since shortly after its inception in 1990. Originally formed by Sol Klein and Liz Everson, Delisle joined Borderline that same year and has since been an enormous influence on the club’s youth. With a quarter century of service under her belt, Delisle has, in some fami-lies’ cases, taught two generations of sheep lov-ers, and the members are grateful to have such a
dedicated, caring leader.Delisle was also a long-standing director with the Rock
Creek Fair Assocation, and, upon her decision not to run for election to the 2016 board, was presented with a custom-made thankyou card by the executive at the association’s annual gen-eral meeting in January. She was also the fall fair’s winner for best lamb carcass at the 2015 Rock Creek fair.
All-in-all, a very successful year for a well-respected, always modest individual.
you can mail your donation to the Regional District of Koote-nay Boundary, 202 - 843 Ross-land Ave., Trail, B.C., V1R 4S8 (specifying it is for the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee). Either way you will receive a tax deductible re-ceipt.
Our committee understands that for many people the emo-tions of last summer still re-
main with them. We would like to offer support for those feel-ing overwhelmed or struggling in this area. If you would like to talk with someone (to explore options and supports avail-able), please contact us through Cathy Riddle at 250-449-1200.
We would like to express our appreciation for the generosity of the Canadian Red Cross
and the Kettle River Lions
Club; both of these organiza-tions have contributed greatly,
both in manpower and fi-nances.
We also wish to thank the many donors who have con-tributed to this fund! So many have worked diligently to assist our communities and residents in rebuilding following the fire.
The Rumplestiltskein Fibre Arts Guild of Rock Creek has made a donation of $1,887.05 to the Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee to help with the re-building in those communities. The guild would like to thank all those that purchased raffle tickets, made cash donations and sent quilts to help raise the funds. Guild members are pictured here during a December meeting.
The Greenwood Seniors Centre welcomed dozens of hungry residents for a bowl of piping hot chili with all the fixings last Wednesday, a fundraising event the organization hopes to feature on a regu-lar basis. Two of the centre’s members are now certified Food Safe, which means the club can now offer more dining events to help supplement the income derived from other sources such as the adjoining Thrift Store. February 15, 2016, marks the begin-ning of Chamber of Commerce Week, an opportunity for B.C.’s more than 125 Chambers of Commerce to showcase their hard work on behalf of businesses across the province.
This year, Chambers are celebrating the theme of “Empowering B.C. busi-nesses” – a theme that highlights how Chambers strive to empower and grow each business in their community.
Every day, Chambers actively strength-en local businesses through network-ing events, mentorship opportunities, professional development activities and other unique programming. Whether hosting events and business awards, supporting young entrepreneurs through mentorship programs, providing community-tai-lored support such as hospitality training in tourism communities, or organizing unique travel experiences for companies interested in learning more about different international markets, Chambers are sharply focused on empowering each and every member business to succeed.
Simultaneously, the Chamber network – B.C.’s largest business organization – is advocating for policy changes to further drive local businesses’ success.
Right now, for example, B.C.’s Chambers are leading efforts to advocate that the provincial government maintain a low tax rate for credit unions, which provide a key source of local business financ-ing for communities right across B.C. This is significant because for 44 communities in B.C., there are no alternative lenders. Keeping that credit union tax rate low is criti-cal to seeing sufficient dollars flow into community businesses, both to launch start-ups and to enable established businesses to secure growth financing.
Chambers are also leading efforts to establish permanent inter-munic-
ipal business licenses. These licenses provide business owners with the geographic flexibility that many need, particularly in areas such as the construction trades. Right now, inter-munic-ipal business licenses are moving from a pilot project to a permanent fixture in four Lower Mainland communities; the Chamber network hopes to further build on this success, with a vision of one day having a single cross-B.C. business license.
These are just two positive changes that the Chamber network is leading for B.C. busi-nesses. Among many areas of impact, B.C.’s Chambers have been a leading voice:
• encouraging balanced budgets at all levels of government;• calling for a made-in-B.C. value-added tax to support businesses in investing in their own
growth; • calling for solutions to B.C.’s skills gap; and• encouraging municipalities to actively support local economic development.
All of these policy pushes, together with Chambers’ local efforts, empower B.C.’s busi-nesses and drive British Columbians’ success.
So as B.C. celebrates Chamber Week, don’t miss the opportunity to swing by your local Chamber, join in on some Chamber Week events, and celebrate the many ways that B.C.’s Chambers empower local businesses and strengthen our communities.
Proud supporter of our
Chamber of Commerce
Message from the
Boundary Country Regional Chamber
On behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, welcome to the Boundary Country Region-al Chamber of Commerce.
We are a new Chamber that looks to advance our member’s growth successes and provide increased opportunities for membership. As a member based organization the Chamber’s role is significant and its responsibility substantial.
Many new opportunities will be presented in this upcoming year and as the world continu-ally changes around us we will need to ensure we are staying on track. In January we held our strategic planning session where we reset our focus and developed our goals for the next 1 to 3 years.
2016 we will celebrate our past successes by continuing our Business after Business Open Houses, e-blasts & newsletters, social media, advertising, marketing & networking opportuni-ties, along with the many benefits of being a BC Chamber of Commerce member. BCRCC has also starting a new Shop Local program in 2016, encouraging Member-to Member discount/benefits within the Boundary.
BCRCC AGM is March 10, 2016. We are calling for Board Directors to represent the Bound-ary; Beaverdell, Bridesville, Christina Lake, Grand Forks, Greenwood, Midway, Rock Creek and Westbridge. 9 Directors in total, nomination will be accepted from the floor. New Member welcome!
BCRCC will be engaged in roundtable discussions, March 17, 2016. We will be hosting our first discussion, with Tourism being the topic. BCRCC looks forward to hosting more through-out the Boundary with groups such as big & small industry, business, merchants, community events and economic growth. We are the voice of business, a community advocate, connec-tor and communicator for local, provincial and federal issues on behalf of our members.
This will be an incredible year building on new & old relationships, adding events to include community Movies in the Park, a BCRCC Golf Tournament October 1, 2016, updating our website to include a better business directory and calendar of events. We are committed to providing value and meeting the needs of our membership.
I encourage you to take the time to see how you can benefit from the Chamber, get involved, engage in Chamber events, Business after Business Open Houses, committee & roundtable discussions. The greater your involvement, the greater the return will be on your investment.
I welcome your ideas, comments, suggestions and thank you for your interest and contin-ued support. We wouldn’t be an organization and couldn’t grow without you. If you’d like more information on the Chamber, Chamber Programs or participate in Roundtable Discus-sions, please contact myself. BCRCC looks forward to working with Business, Tourism and Events, growing our investment in the Boundary.
Sincerely,Kathy WrightBCRCC Executive Director250 . 442 . 7263
AGM
ANNUALGENERAL
MEETING
When Kena Manson graduated from the College of the Rockies culinary program, she never imagined she would end up back in her hometown of Rock Creek running her own meat shop.
With the retirement of local butcher John Solowy, however, and the resulting empty space that served as his shop for many years, Manson and fiance Kevin Dietrich saw an opportunity for both a business and a way for Manson to return to her roots.
Manson graduated from Boundary Cen-tral Secondary School in 2013 and headed to Cranbrook shortly thereafter, completing the culinary program at the local community college a year later.
“I really enjoyed the butcher component of the culinary program,” Manson explained, “and it taught me extensive knife skills, which inspired me to apply to the National Meat Training Centre at Olds College in Alberta.”
Manson, the only female student, thrived in the program, graduating three months lat-er with one of the highest grades in the class. The day following graduation, the centre hired Manson to run the retail store as well as to help instruct students on the slaughter
and cutting floors. “I would likely have stayed at the college if
this great business opportunity did not come up, and it is very nice being home,” Manson said.
One of K&K’s specialties is gourmet sau-sage, infused with fruit and spices, and Man-son feels it’s important to make her products gluten-free. “Most families these days have at least one member who cannot include gluten in their diet and I want my products to be an option for everyone,” she said.
K&K Meats’ goal is to source their meat locally and bring the finest that the West Boundary has to offer to the plates of locals and visitors alike.
K&K Meats is located at 3615 Kettle Valley Rd. E. in Rock Creek. Kena can be reached at 250-421-8952.
Manson returns to open K&K Meats
Kena Manson is looking forward to supplying West Boundary residents with
her handmade sausages and other fine meats from her brand new meat shop in Rock Creek. Everyone is invited to K&K
Meats’ open house on Feb. 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Drop by for some samples and to
wish Kena and partner Kevin all the best on their new venture.
