Greenwood Elementary (GES) is in need of volunteers and sponsors for their daily breakfast program. Money is needed to lever-age funding already received from the Cana-dian charity Breakfast for Learning.
Teacher Jennifer Eaton reports that so far this year the school has spent $400 deliver-ing the program. They expect another $200 to come in from Breakfast for Learning, a national charity that educates and empowers communities to deliver school-based nutri-tion programs, helping children and youth realize their full potential in life.
Eaton hopes to attract donors or sponsors willing to help fund the program through the rest of the school year.
Volunteers, the heart and soul of a school breakfast program, are needed as well. “It is the people who volunteer on a regular basis at these programs who ensure delivery of meals and snacks to hungry students,” says the Breakfast for Learning website.
Hunger in the classroom is a problem that crosses the gap be-tween rich and poor too. According to Breakfast for Learning over 30 per cent of elementary school students do not eat a healthy breakfast before school; while the 2014 Boundary Vital Signs re-port put the percentage of children in the Boundary are living in low-income households at close to 20 per cent.
“While there are many causes of child hunger, we know that school nutrition programs provide one answer. The positive impact a school nutrition program has in the life of a child is both immedi-ate and long-term. Nutrition programs improve learning.”
If you are interested in donating or volunteering, contact Eaton at GES 250-445-6616.

Hotel and motel owners across the Boundary are being asked to support a two per cent tax on their occupied rooms. Revenue from the tax would fund a destination marketing organization with the goal of increasing bed stays in the shoulder season through direct marketing of the region.
Cindy Alblas came to the Greenwood council meeting on Monday, Jan. 12 to ask council to support the initiative. Working for the Christina Gateway Devel-opment Community Association, Alblas said she has been spent about 30 hours a week working on the project since last September. A survey of accommodators has been completed that shows about 60 per cent support for the proposal. A simple majority would be sufficient to make application, but Alblas is aiming for 80 per cent.
Collection of the accommodation tax would be mandatory if approved by • See ROOM TAX page A3
Be prepared to be wowed by the costumes in the upcoming production of the Rodgers and Ham-merstein musical Cinderella on the BCSS stage later this month. Fine arts instructor Sarah Tripp is especially thrilled to welcome Japanese exchange student and pianist Ami Ichishima to the BCSS music department for this musical. With a cast of 25 and three costume changes, the audience is pretty much guaranteed value for their $10 admission ($8 for kids under 12). The show will run for four nights over two weeks—on Jan. 21 and 22; and the following week on Jan. 26 and 27. Reserva-tions at 250-449-2224. PHOTO: PAT KELLY

Joke of the Week:While working at a pizza parlor I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time then said ‘Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don’t think I’m hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.

Victoria. According to Alblas, the Boundary is the only area in B.C. that does not charge this two per cent.
She said that to date her focus has been on the hotels and motels, but she will be meeting with other businesses such as Deadwood Junction and the Motherlode. “I will give you a complete report on Greenwood,” she promised, “but the report I am giving to you today is the Boundary-wide report.”
She estimates between $30,000 and $40,000 in new revenue might come in from the tax. Seventy per cent of the tax would be directed to market-ing the region with the purpose of increasing bed stays; with the remaining 30 per cent used for ad-
ministration. She asked the city to encourage local hotels
and motels to sign on.Accommodators from across the Bound-
ary have been invited to a meeting on Feb. 3 to discuss ideas about what other destination mar-keting organizations have done in their commu-nities. Alblas said presenters from other destina-tion marketing organizations (DMOs) would be on hand.
She hopes to form a DMO from the leaders at the Feb. 3 meeting to move the application pro-cess forward. After that it could take up to a year for approval from the province.

New City Hall hoursBeginning Jan. 19, the office
will be closed from noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. There was considerable debate at Monday night’s council meeting about the need to close for lunch, but Administrator Rob-in Dalziel insisted the change would result in bet-ter service. It was finally agreed to implement the change and review it in three months time.
Currently lunch breaks are staggered for the four employees in the office. Everyone works sev-en hours per day, but the staggered lunch sched-ule means two and a half hours each day when someone is away. This sometimes means that staff handling a particular file or service might be away and a customer is told they have to return later.
***The Greenwood outdoor rink volunteers came
to City Hall and were successful in getting coun-cil to rescind a 2013 motion to demolish the rink boards. Christopher Yates, Ray Harrison and Mike Goddard came with letters of support for the rink from Area E rural director Vicki Gee and the Greenwood Improvement Society.
A letter was sent to Vicki Gee thanking her for support and informing her that council is evalu-ating the role of the skating rink in the city and will confirm its status during the 2015 budget process.
***As part of his memo on the rink, Administra-
tor Robin Dalziel had also recommended that a cost-free risk assessment process offered by the Municipal Insurance Association be initiated to
assess the risk for the skating rink, curling rink, Lotzgar Park, smelter and smoke stack, public parks and city works facilities.
Instead council opted to re-quest more information about the
MIA offer. Councillor Darla Ashton cautioned against the risk assessment saying, “We might lose access to some of these things by going down that road.”
***After receiving complaints that the weekly
transit bus is overfull, council will request that the service be evaluated to see if more capacity is needed.
***Council voted to enter the Berkeley Springs
water tasting competition again this year.***
Council received a draft “Workplace Anti-Harassment and Anti-Bullying Policy and Pro-gram.” It will be back on the table for adoption at the regular meeting of Jan. 26. In the meantime it is being forwarded to the union and WorkSafeBC for their review.
***Council approved the city commencing ne-
gotiation with the RDKB to facilitate the de-velopment of a new Official Community Plan (OCP), depending on budget considerations.
Dalziel said he anticipates it to cost approxi-mately $40,000 over two years. This compares to $80,000 and $120,000 to hire outside consultants, he added. The last OCP review for Greenwood was done in 1996.

We have a new public wireless network for patrons to use in and around the library. We had to re-configure it for technical reasons, so there is a new network name—GPL Public—and a new password, which you can get by stopping in or reading the sign in the library window. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused during the changeover; thank you for bearing with us.
Do you want to know more about landlord and tenant legal issues? Or about disability income as-sistance? Becky Quirk from the Nelson Advocacy Centre will be at the library on Thursday, Jan. 29 to present talks on these two topics. At 10 a.m. she will speak about landlord/tenant law and at 11 a.m. about Disability Income Assistance. Each presentation will include time for questions and answers, with a break between, so you may come for one or both of these talks.
We have had a few donations of DVDs for our collection lately; thank you so much to those who gave them to us. But we can certainly use more, as our budget for buying new ones is limited and the
DVDs are popular items. We have gotten rid of most of
our videocassettes, and the shelves are looking a little bare. So if you have some DVDs around that you have watched enough times, please
consider donating them to the library so that oth-ers may enjoy them. And if you want to watch them again, you can always come to the library and borrow them!
Our annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27. We’ll begin with coffee, tea, and goodies at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will com-mence at 7 p.m.
Annual reports from the board chair, librarian and treasurer will be presented, and new board members nominated and elected. if you are inter-ested in becoming a board member, let us know. The job involves monthly meetings, plus helping with fundraising activities as you are able.
This meeting is usually over in about half an hour, but we need as many of our patrons as possible to come, as some of our funders like to see a good representation of our membership at the AGM.

Midway resident Lynn Wickens has been using Face-book to provide the community the chance to help a local mom, Agnes Srahulek and her family as she faces health challenges which prevent her from working.
To donate you post a photo and description of your item. Members of the group visit the site and place their bids in the comment section under the post.
One hundred per cent of the price of dona-tions will go into the trust account for Agnes that has been opened at the Heritage Credit Union in Greenwood.
Everyone is welcome to both participate and invite his or her friends to the fundraiser.
Wickens reports that the bidding closed on the first items offered on Sunday and it added up to $1,400. An ethnic dinner for four gar-nered the highest bid during the first week, go-ing for $160 and the high bidder then turned around and donated the meal itself to Agnes.
New stuff is being posted now—new or used items, services, tickets, whatever....
Three dozen suckers made by Charlene Boyo are on of-fer. “I have never had one of Charlene’s suckers but they were legendary when we came to town,” Wickens said.
Leanne McLaren suggested the Facebook auction idea to Wickens and it has really taken off.
Check out the auction on Facebook–just look for the Agnes Srahulek Fundraiser/Auction. Those who wish to donate something but don’t have the capability of taking a photo of it to post on Facebook, or if they don’t do Face-book, can contact Wickens at 250-449-2636.
***Sometimes a person is made poorer by his or her pos-
sessions.Such is the case with this flashlight I own. It is one of
those little LED flashlights, which at under three and a half inches long, is small enough to fit in your pocket. You know the kind—it’s powered by three AAA batteries and can be bought for only a buck or maybe three at the check-out counter of most gas bars.
Well I have one that’s worth all of that and twenty-five cents more to boot. Except now it is rendered useless.
It seems an American quarter that was also in my pocket was the perfect size to get lodged in front of the lens. I tried to pry it out with the blade of a knife, but now it’s wedged tighter than ever in there.
I can’t use it for a flashlight anymore. I wonder if I can use it as legal tender at the checkout when I go to the gas bar to buy a new flashlight?
***I went to the school board meeting on
Tuesday night because it was held in Midway this month.
Norm Sabourin was there. Attendance is part of his job as president of the Boundary District Teachers’ Association.
Norm, bless his heart, is well known for asking ques-tions. At the end of the meeting there is always a question period and this is where Norm shines.
I was sitting next to him as he went through the list of questions he had written down during the meeting.
Like I say, this was at the end of the meeting. Get through the question period and we’d be on our way home for the day. So I was a bit disconcerted when I noticed he read the question at the bottom of his list first and then began working his way up the page.
So in a sense, the longer they talked the longer his list got.
Internet networking our community
Greenwood is very much a heritage community. The downtown stroll is filled with tourists stopping to take pictures of the lovely buildings. Some of those building go back to the 1890s.
Greenwood is a heritage community in another re-spect as well. The city has not reviewed their Official Community Plan since 1996. Now that’s a historical document!
Provincial law allows municipalities to adopt an Official Community Plan (OCP). While OCPs do not require the council or board to proceed with any project contained in the plan, all bylaws or works undertaken by local government must be consistent with the plan. So it acts as a guidepost for the general direction of the community, providing a list of pur-poses and goals to work towards. Public input during an OCP review gives residents a chance to weigh in too.
The RDKB planning department has offered to put this project on their work schedule. By using regional district staff it will cost about $40,000 spread over two years; far less than if a private consultant were hired.
Council was asked on Monday night to commit to the regional district offer so that folks in the Trail office can set their own budget and work plan for the year.
Money came up as the stumbling block, and Greenwood is set to decide during budget discussions beginning later this month whether to go forward with a review of their OCP.
There are young couples raising families in the city who have never in their adult lives had an op-portunity to provide input into this document, which should form part of the foundation that a strong and vibrant municipal democracy is built upon.
We are not sure what the best-before date is on an OCP, but 19 years might be a stretch.
Talk about a historical document

Dispensary asks for your support
The Kootenay’s Medicine Tree started quietly and professionally providing ac-cess to medical cannabis products in Au-gust in our new location on 68 Avenue.
We have applied for and been issued a business license by the City of Grand Forks and currently operate in the legal “grey-area” which amounts to favour-able court decisions and police tolerance that has allowed dispensaries like ours to operate elsewhere in B.C.
An applicant for our services must have been diagnosed with a medical condition by a physician or nurse prac-titioner and have medical records to substantiate the diagnosis before mem-bership in our dispensary is issued and careful, monitored access to medical cannabis products is granted.
All was going well as time passed, our lab tested/produced products were helping local cancer patients manage symptoms and fight back against their tumours, children with debilitating forms of epilepsy reduce their seizures (drastically in some cases), chronic pain patients addicted to opiates reduce and
cease use of opiates, seniors gain sleep and pain relief by leaving toxic pharma meds behind for cannabis, the list is long in such a short time…four months.
And then we were visited by plain-clothes RCMP constables, who were in the very awkward position of inform-ing us that if we did not cease our work without a license from Health Canada’s new commercial system, because of only two complaints filed from the commu-nity, they would be forced into an en-forcement action against our dispensary (arrests, warrant, seizure of evidence, doors locked).
We do not blame the RCMP, they are in a hard position where they must en-force a bad law.
Because companies licensed under Health Canada’s MMPR regulations are prohibited from selling cannabis cap-sules, other edibles, oils, creams or sup-positories and because the vast majority of our membership requires non-smok-able cannabis products, we cannot ap-ply for this license and cut off these very vulnerable people.
Our non-smokable products are produced by private B.C. companies and are lab tested; we are able to pro-vide safe, standardized products of
known potency, achieving reliability in dosing—a first for local medical canna-bis patients.
We are asking area residents to please show your support for local access to safe, standardized medical cannabis op-tions for the chronically and terminally ill who require this medicine, by writ-ing to Mayor Konrad, Grand Forks city council, and local media like the Grand Forks Gazette and providing us with a copy. We hope that with enough public support the RCMP can show our dis-pensary tolerance, like that extended to the five dispensaries in Vernon, soon to be three in Kelowna, and one in Nelson.
To those who oppose what we are doing, please take the time to either come down and talk to us and/or con-duct even brief research into the human body’s endo-cannabinoid system and the vast medical uses of cannabinoids like CBD and THC.
When you watch a child’s daily sei-zures go from 100 a day to nearly zero after the administration of a cannabis concentrate product, you will see why local access to these cannabis derivative products is essential.

In early December, the Boundary District Curling Rink season was brought to an abrupt halt when the ice melted after the ice plant that had served the club since 1956 rusted so badly it began to leak. Club members voted unanimously to save the curling rink as well as what remains in the 2015 season.
Equipment was located in Grand Forks that was virtually new. The rink there had stored it because it was too small to cool their four sheets, but it would be perfect for the two sheets in Mid-
way.The Heritage Credit Union came through
with a cheque for $2,500 from their Community Investment Fund to help cover the costs. Cred-it union director Darla Ashton presented the cheque last week at the West Boundary branch in Greenwood.
The new equipment and electrical upgrades brings the Boundary District Curling Club up to date with an environmentally-friendly ice plant in Midway.
Heritage Credit Union employees Donna Durban (left) and Julie Hallstrom watch as Kim Lindseth and Lisa Baia of the Boundary District Curling Club receive a cheque for $2,500 from credit union director Darla Ashton at the West Boundary branch in Greenwood.

Brandi’s offers sweets and treatsIf the determination to get down to work and start
tackling the job is in any predictor of success, then Green-wood’s newest business—Brandi’s Sweets & Buddies Treats—should do very well.
New Years’ Day is a day of rest for most, but Charlene and James Bateman wanted to get their store open as soon as they could. But they didn’t want a big fancy opening, just a soft opening that would bring in a few customers. Contact with customers is vital because, to a large extent, what they put on their shelves will be what their custom-ers ask for.
Charlene describes the shop (located at 264 Copper) as a store for hard-to-find candies and a pet store all in one location.
They can source a candy that you remember from your childhood, as long as it is still being made. Charlene helped one customer who couldn’t find the candy they were looking for because it had changed its name some years ago.
Brandi’s Sweets & Buddies Treats is also an opportunity to discover some sweets you’ve might never have heard of,
but are on the shelf because other customers have recom-mended them.
Some very interesting and unique Japanese candy now in stock might prove popular with some Greenwood resi-dents.
Charlene did promise hard-to-find candies and treats; and to prove up that claim she offers four flavours of ed-ible crickets. If the crickets don’t appeal then perhaps you can wait a couple of weeks for the larva to arrive.
Back to more traditional fare, she also carries choco-lates and candies from the States—stuff that you can’t get here. They have candies from England—toffees and fudge—also German and Turkish candies.
The Gummy Bears section is open, and Charlene plans to expand it further too.
It’s not all sugar though. Flavoured banana chips are one alternative in stock now, and a full line of diabetic candy is due in by this weekend. They are also planning to bring in a line of Disney clothing
A separate room in the store features pet supplies, treats and food for anything from hamsters or fish to dogs
and cats. They sell pet products, including high quality food for
dogs and cats. Acana from Grand Prairie, Riplee’s Ranch from the Fraser Valley and Orijen, also out of Alberta.
Both Charlene and James were originally from B.C. She says she took the family to Saskatchewan a couple of years ago, but a week of -45 C temperatures last winter convinced them they should move back.
They have lived in Green-wood since May and Charlene says she is really happy here.
She is active in the com-munity, currently serving as co-president of the PAC at Greenwood Elementary. She’s also volunteered at the seniors’ centre, occasionally calls bingo and is joining the volunteer fire department. James was one of the workers on the project that

Area E Rural Director Vicki Gee met with members of her area planning com-mission (APC) last week at the Seniors’ Centre in Midway.
Members of the APC are Grant Harf-man, George Dagg, Vic Lockhart, Mi-chael Fenwick-Wilson, Lisa Fillmore, John Condon, Jamie Haynes, Stephen Kirkham, Fred Marshall, Janet Matsalla, Lynn Storm, Harald Zinner and Mary-Jane Prutton.
They had postponed this, their in-augural meeting, from Monday to Wednesday because of the snowstorm at the beginning of the week. It was agreed to continue to meet in Midway for the rest of the winter because of its central location.
Donna Dean, manager of planning and development for the Regional Dis-trict of Kootenay Boundary, joined them for the meeting. She brought reference
materials and was available to answer questions about APCs in general and about the specific matters before the APC for January.
“What a great mix of people on the APC,” Gee said. “There was good, thoughtful discussion about a variety of topics. They’ve agreed to work with me at the next meeting on criteria for grant-in-aid, and in providing recom-mendations on some of the requests I’ve
received so far this year.” APC meetings are open to the public.
Gee said she will post dates and times on Facebook (Vicki Gee Regional Director) and in the newspapers.
An APC is a group of individuals that are appointed by an electoral area director and endorsed by the RDKB board of directors. Members are chosen to represent a variety of community in-terests.

Charlene hopes that good customer service and the recommendations of satis-fied patrons will help the Brandi’s Sweets & Buddies Treats continue to build their in-ventory and become a stable source of in-come for the family. They welcome special requests and orders.
“We price ourselves according to other candy stores we have visited or re-searched—or below that,” Charlene said.
They are looking forward to taking the shop through its first twelve months with plans in the works for both Valentine’s and Easter. “Next Christmas is going to be fun,” Charlene said.
They are open Monday through Satur-day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. During winter they will be closed on Sundays.

Charlene Bateman was so anxious to get Brandi’s Sweets & Buddies Treats open that she did the soft opening on New Years Day. The store specializes in retro and unique candies. They are also suppliers of fine pet food and other products for your furry friends.
