School District 51 (Boundary) held two public consultation meet-ings last week. There was one in the West Boundary on Wednes-day, April 8 at BCSS and another in Grand Forks for the East Boundary parents and communities the fol-lowing night.

On hand at the BCSS meeting were trustees Cathy Riddle, Cindy Strukoff and Rose Zitko along with Superintendent Kevin Argue, Di-rector of Learning Doug Lacey, Bri-an Foy, principal of the four West Boundary elementary schools, and teacher Jennifer MacDonald.

The three-hour meeting featured a PowerPoint on planning, finance and educational directions.

Argue began with an overview of planning as it is currently done in the district and the resulting docu-ments such as school growth plans and district achievement contracts.

The current district achievement contract has four goals: to embed the inquiry process into teaching and learning throughout SD51; to improve student achievement in reading; to increase access and use of technology to deepen learning and authentically communicate their knowledge; and to improve the positive, social emotional connect-edness of our students with their school experience through school initiatives supported by the Health Promoting Schools coordinator.

discussion groups and Argue asked them to consider the question: How are our goals changing our out-comes for students?

Secretary-Treasurer Jeanette Hanlon then gave a report on the budget now being prepared for the 2015-2016 year.

She noted that since the 2001-2002 school year enrolment in the district has fallen 39 per cent. From 2,030 in 2001; there are now 1,247 full-time equivalent (FTE) students in the district.

The declining enrolment trend is expected to continue too. There are 1,423 students (by headcount) in the system in September 2010. Last September there are 1,270. That is expected to fall to 1,117 in Septem-ber 2019.

“Enrolment determines rev-enue,” Hanlon said. She added that Kindergarten enrolment is a huge number each year. Using birth re-cords and StrongStart numbers, the administration makes educated es-timates of what those numbers will be each year.

But even educated guesses can be off. This year they had anticipated 68 or 70 students starting Kinder-garten across the district; they have 60.

Hanlon gave an overview of how the district is funded. Funding pro-tection guarantees 98.5 per cent of previous years’ funding to protect against huge fluctuations in student numbers.

Estimated total expenses for the 2015-2016 school year are

$16,016,274. Revenue is anticipat-ed to be $15,448,622. This leaves a shortfall of $567,652 that will have to be covered by the $1,200,408 sur-plus on hand from prior years; leav-ing, on June 30, 2016, an estimated surplus for future years of $632,756.

Seventy-six per cent of expendi-tures go to instruction, 15 per cent to operations and maintenance, five per cent to district administration

and four per cent to transportation. The board is challenged in this up-coming budget by a ministry edict that they find $91,880 in adminis-trative savings in the coming year.

The Boundary Youth Soccer Association (BYSA) kicked off its fifth year on Sunday morn-ing. The sports field at Boundary Central Senior Secondary was divided into 10 soccer pitches of varying sizes so they better matched the length of the legs found on the kids in four age classifica-tions: U13, U11, U9 and U7.

Program administrator Jeff Olsen said they had 250 kids in U-7 and up. Not on the field on Saturday were another 50 kids in the Kicks for Kids (K4K) program for ages 2-4. “They do their thing Monday to Friday in Midway, Grand Forks and Christina Lake this year,” Olsen explained.

Registration for the season is $120 but if a family has more than one child in the program, the fee is reduced to $108 each.

Olsen said the BYSA executive is currently healthy with seven directors. Planning for the 2015 season started back in December. Coaching clinics, refs, sponsors and equipment all had to be in place. Early registration started in January.

“Enrolment is pretty much on par with what

we guessed it was going to be,” Olsen said. “So it is steady; over five years we have maintained an interested core group of just around 300 kids. We have kids coming back which shows that we are doing what the kids want us to do.”

Teams practice in their home communities during the week and meet on school fields across the Boundary on Sunday mornings from now until the spring season wrap-up tournament on June 27 in Grand Forks. Olsen said they are 90 per cent sure they will run a fall program this year too.

They don’t keep scores or standings through the season. At the final tournament of the year there is a scoring format, but it is geared towards keeping everything tight.

“The goal is to get kids outside and playing sports—it is not about them winning and losing. Everyone gets equal time regardless of talent.”

Police apprehend suspectsMidway RCMP are pleased to announce that

two suspects, one male and one female, have been arrested in connection to a multitude of break and enters and vehicle property thefts in the Boundary region, Oliver, Osoyoos, Pentic-ton, Kelowna, Barriere, and Chase over the last two months.

RCMP are very confident with evidence that was gathered at all the scenes that these two individuals were responsible for all the offences. Kamloops RCMP received information that led to the arrests.Bikes stolen

On Monday, April 6 Midway RCMP received a report of two children’s BMX bikes that were stolen from the same Midway location from which two quads and a firearm were taken. Police believe suspect/suspects are linked to a multi-tude of recent break and enters and vehicle thefts in the area. The investigation is ongoing.

Trailer fire in GreenwoodOn Tuesday, April 7, police were advised of

a camper/trailer fire in Greenwood on North Kimberly. Corporal Judson Mayes told the Times there was nothing suspicious for the po-lice to investigate.

Cell phone saves elderly man Mayes reported that on Sunday, April 12 Midway RCMP

responded to a overdue traveller who was known to have trav-elled up Christian Valley Road. According to the police, his vehicle broke down at kilometre 86. The elderly 84-year-old gentleman started walking down the road at 3:30 p.m. called 911 from his cell phone when he could get reception.

The dispatcher was able to locate his approximate location using GPS coordinates and RCMP found the elderly man at marker 59-1/2 shortly after midnight in poor health condi-tion. Emergency Health Services was called for assistance and the gentleman returned home with family and is resting.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Opera-tions is conducting an ecosystem restoration burn near John-stone Creek until April 30, weather conditions permitting.

This controlled burn will cover 25 hectares and smoke may be visible from Rock Creek and surrounding areas. Smoke may be present for several days, as fires within the burn control lines are extinguished.

Fire is a natural, normal process in many ecosystems. It can be beneficial and necessary to maintain a healthy forest and a di-versity of plant and animal life. Through evolution and exposure to wildfires, many plants and animals have adapted to fire and actually depend on it to reproduce.

Historically, grasslands and an open forest canopy have been maintained in the Boundary Region through frequent, low-in-

tensity ground fires. In the absence of naturally occurring fires in recent decades, the planned site of the Johnstone Creek eco-system restoration fire has become overgrown. This prescribed fire, combined with logging, thinning and brush-clearing proj-ects, will help the area return to its natural state.

The goal of this project is to reduce ecosystem degradation by reintroducing fire to the landscape, which will enhance winter habitat for a variety of ungulates, improve overall biodiversity, create a more open forest habitat and increase the availability of food sources such as shrubs and grasses. This project will help maintain or improve habitat quality for native species at risk, with a particular focus on a bird known as the Williamson’s sap-sucker.

The overall reduction in the amount of combustible material (fuel load) will also improve the area’s fire resiliency and decrease the risk of catastrophic wildfires.

Letters Policy

Sometimes gossip is handy, sometimes not.I put my house up for sale last month. What I know

about buying and selling a house could be defined as “next to not much.”

I’ve lived here in the Boundary for 40 years and in Mid-way for 25. My first 11 in the village, I was a renter. The only reason I bought the house was because the landlord wanted to sell it. Facing the prospect of mov-ing, I decided it would be easier to buy the place than not.

Now I have to move down to the States to help out with family and so the house went onto the market.

Putting a For Sale sign on your front lawn can give a lot of people something to talk about other than the weather. News spread pretty fast.

Nothing unusual about news spreading fast when you live in the middle of Midway though—go six blocks in any direction and you are on the outskirts of the village. But having word spread quickly was no problem as far as I could see. After all, I wanted people to know it was on the market.

Just a few short days after the post had gone into the front lawn I was happily surprised to get an honest to gosh real offer on the place.

I felt like the king of the world; an illusion that was helped along because I found out I had subjects now. Seems that the offer was “subject to” certain things. Basi-cally, we were talking but I hadn’t actually sold it yet.

The offer came on so fast that a lot of people were still into using the sign itself as the conversation starter with

me. So they got to see me slap on a big grin and tell them I’d sold it.

Only it wasn’t sold—the deal fell through. So if you have always wanted to live in downtown Midway and are looking for an affordable place and you have been kicking yourself because you heard the place sold, well I am writ-ing to tell you that it is still here for you.

And as a bonus the place comes with cats!No wait—scratch that! I just get one ru-

mour quashed and then I flap my gums and get another one going!

No, the cats won’t be sold with the house. However I can provide at least a half doz-

en honey-do lists that I’ve stumbled across while sorting stuff out and packing things up. It gives a whole new meaning to the term starter home: instructions included.

I am looking for help from friends who like cats, though. I need to find someone willing to provide a foster home for one or more of my four indoor cats for a month or

so. I am heading to Oregon without a place lined up there to stay yet and I’ll need a few weeks to get organized. I am, of course, willing to pay expenses.

The cats are all in good health, spayed and vaccinated. Three are older and one is only a few years old. Please get in touch at reporter@boundarycreektimes.com if you think you might be able to help for a month, possibly two.

So the latest two bits of gossip are now confirmed as fact—my house is still for sale and I am looking for people with room enough in their hearts to look after my cats.

The Boundary Youth Soccer Association began its fifth season last weekend. When somewhere around 250 kids hit the BCSS sports field last Sun-day it practically doubled the population of the vil-lage for a few hours.

They say it is good for economic development when you can get folks to stop and stay in the com-munity for a few hours. Though it could be said with some honesty that while those soccer kids may have been in the village that morning, it didn’t look like too many of them were stopping any-where particular for too long.

Organized youth sports seem to have taken over in the past decade or two. Mothers used to kick their kids outdoors with instructions not to go past the blue mailbox at the end of the street. And ev-ery kid knew how to tell when it was time to come home for dinner too—you listened for the whistle or the yell. If you were confused about it at all, then mom—or perhaps dad—could help clear up your understanding of the concept.

Not saying that organized sports like soccer are bad—just that unstructured play is valuable too. It unlocks creativity and role-playing.

One reason organized kids sports have become the norm is that terms such as “stranger-danger” and “street proofing” your children have become part of the lexicon.

But stats tell us that the chances of a child being abducted by a stranger are no greater now than in the ’50s and ’60s.

So on those days when there isn’t soccer prac-tice or a game scheduled, just kick the kids outside and let them play hide and go seek with their child-hood.

Let them play!

In the summer of 2000, Sharon had been working very hard for several years as a professional. She was 36 years old and her daughter was a toddler. Sharon felt good about her job, her family, and her life.

“I was generally healthy and had no complaints from my doctor.” She didn’t have any idea that a major event was going to turn her life upside down and begin a long and painful journey that continues today.

Sharon knew she had a busy day ahead of her. As the employee of a large company, she spent a lot of her time travelling and dealing with the complexities of the financial world. She tore out of the office, lugging two heavy briefcases. As she approached her car, the next thing she knew, she was on the ground.

“I don’t know what happened really. It felt like an axe had hit me in the back of my head - the most severe pain I’ve ever had in my life. I knew this wasn’t good.”

Sharon had a stroke. In fact, after performing an MRI, doctors believed she had suffered five or six strokes, some smaller, some more severe. It took almost two weeks from her first trip to Emergency for doctors to diagnose the strokes. During a visit to her doctor shortly after the incident in the parking lot, Sharon even suggested that a stroke was a possibility.

It seemed like no one could believe a 36-year-old woman could have had a stroke.

One of the people most surprised was Sharon herself. “I would have never thought - having just been through the health system when you have a baby and you’re watched quite closely. I’d had no complications with that. I’d had nothing to indicate a problem. I’d had an annual check-up that year - everything was fine. Never had any concern about high blood pressure or cholesterol or anything like that.”

Statistics, however, show people experiencing critical illnesses - heart attacks, cancer, and strokes - at young ages. The average person who makes a claim on critical illness insurance is 47 years old*. That means significant numbers of people must cope with critical illnesses before they reach the age of fifty.

When people like Sharon, raising a family and working professionally,

experience a critical illness, the costs can be great.Her employer’s disability insurance partly covered her expenses. Even

with that financial help, her family’s budget was affected. Sharon couldn’t drive. Paying for trips to another city for tests, staying overnight in hotels, arranging daycare for her daughter all added up.

Her husband had to take off weeks of work, which had major financial implications for his self-employed business. Sharon also had to take time off work. Experts in health insurance stress that it’s important to start thinking about protecting your finances from serious illnesses sooner, rather than later. With the medical technology that’s available, more people like Sharon are able to survive critical illnesses than ever before. In the 1950s, one out of ten people survived a stroke. Today, almost 8 out of 10 people who have a stroke survive.

Sharon has experienced first-hand the effects a stroke has on her insurability - being able to purchase insurance. “At 36 a lot of people are just starting a family and getting into a place where they’re looking to buy insurance. Do it as early as you can, because you’re not going to be able to get it if you’ve had a serious illness.”

In other words, you may survive a stroke or heart attack and return to a normal life, but you won’t have the option of purchasing certain types of insurance.

“Sharon” isn’t her real name - she asked us to respect her privacy. All the other elements of her account are true. She experienced a catastrophic health event, and she wants people to know how it affected her life. All young and middle-aged breadwinners should consider her advice about purchasing insurance products while you’re in good health.

Between them they bring experience in many areas including public health, education, wildlife biology, forestry, trails & recreation, community development, planning, work on non-pro� ts, active outdoors involvement and travel.

The incorporation papers will be � led in the next couple of weeks. We’re talking to the Ministry (Rec Sites & Trails) about signing a partnership agreement for the Trans Canada Trail from Eholt Summit to the northern border of West Boundary.

The next step will be to hire a Trails Coordinator. The directors are putting together a job descrip-tion and an ad will go out in the next couple of weeks for this position. Instructions will include where to send your resume.

Fair to feature talent eventThe Rock Creek And Boundary Fair

is excited to introduce a talent competi-tion to the fall fair this year. This venue gives local aspiring singers and musi-cians the opportunity to take centre stage and shine for their community.

The competition is open to ages five and up, and is divided into three catego-

ries: youth, teen and adult. BCSS fine arts teacher Sarah Needly-

Tripp said the application and rules will be posted on the fair website (rockcreek-fallfair.ca) in the very near future. Inter-ested performers are asked to see the details and deadlines when the “Talent Competition Rules” link goes live.

“Spread the word and let’s show Boundary what a diverse community we live in,” Needly-Tripp said.

City considers advertising partnershipAdvertising partnership

past the first hurdle with Greenwood council as city office staff were directed to research the possibility of partnering with the Board of Trade (BOT) and the Greenwood Heritage Society (museum) on an ad in the 2016 Kettle Valley Ex-press visitors guide.

At council’s regular meeting Mon-day night, Councillor Colleen Lang ini-tially made a motion turning down the opportunity but it was defeated. Lang, along with museum representative Do-reen McLean, suggested the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA) guide provide more bang for the buck.

Community Forest agreement delivered

Mayor Ed Smith reported that on Monday, March 30 the Honourable

Steve Thompson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations came to the Vaagen mill in Midway to present the community forest  agree-ment to the municipalities of Green-wood and Midway.

Grant applications approved

Council gave staff permission to ap-ply for two grants: one for the water sys-tem and the other for the sewer system.

According to Administrator Robin Dalziel each project would have an es-timated $500,000 price tag; with 20 per cent being the responsibility of the city. He said gas tax revenue could be used if the projects go forward.

The approval of council at this time does not commit them to going forward with the projects, however.

Repairs overdueThe Greenwood Museum got some long overdue repairs last week as Jerry Sperling brought his backhoe in to expose the south basement wall. Speaking on behalf of the museum, Doreen McLean told the Times that the building, which was built in 1981, had never had any water proofing or tar on the basement walls. It has leaked from time to time over the years, but last winter was especially bad. The money to put in a water barrier came from the museum’s own budget.

Students prepare for graduationIn conversation with members of the Class of 2015

Tyler Woykin is a confident young man who appears fully ready to take his place in the outside world after second-ary school.

He took advantage of the Pathfinder Program, a partnership between Selkirk College and the school district that of-fers occupational courses leading to various certifications and tickets at a re-duced cost to the student.

Some examples of tickets he has earned are bobcat operator, wheel loader operator, first aid attendant – Occupa-tional First Aid Level 1, transportation endorsement, fall protection and H2S Alive.

He is also a skilled mechanic and holds a valid driver’s license.

He has worked on farms and is used to taking on heavy loads. His brag sheet

says he can handle money, can work ei-ther alone or as a member of a team and is used to completing work in a set time frame.

He coached little league baseball one spring when his brother wanted to play and the team didn’t have a coach.

Tyler’s hobbies and interests include automobiles, motorcycles, camping and fishing.

He’s worked at Miller Springs and Phoenix Ski Hill.

His short-term goal is simple: “To find full-time employment in a friendly environment doing something I love.”

In 10 years he’d like to see himself working in a full-time position with some job security, “making a decent wage so I am not living paycheque to paycheque.”

“I prefer to do things outdoors,” Tyler explained. His dad taught him auto me-chanics and he now does all of his own auto mechanics at home.

He said BCSS is a great school and is especially appreciative of the way teach-ers stay after school to help students one-on-one. He does suggest more hands on work, less written work in the mechanics course.

Tyler completed his grad require-ments early and is now available for work.

BCSS grad Skylar Desjardins plans to attend UVic this fall but she says it’s hard to say where she’ll be in 10 years time because she is going into theatre. She hopes to see herself working with a the-atre company in Vancouver or Victoria, as well as doing some travelling.

She caught the acting bug doing an elementary school Christmas play. “It must have been The Polar Express,” says Skylar. “I really wanted to do it and it just blew my mind! I just really enjoyed it and every since then I have wanted to be in performances when there were some. I pursued it all through high school and I still love it.”

She has either performed, co-di-rected, stage-managed or crewed on 10 school productions since 2007.

She said her favourite role to date was Rizzo in Grease, which she played in Grade 10. “Rizzo was kind of fun because she was rude a lot,” Skylar said with a laugh, “she was her own girl kind

of thing and I got to explore that.”This was also her first singing role,

something she has come to love doing. In fact she sang Oh Canada at this year’s

Dads vs. Grads hockey game.Skylar grew up in Beaverdell and

went to school in the Okanagan through Grade 7 and she says that BCSS is a lot more welcoming and close-knit. “You know everybody—everybody knows each other and can help each other.”

She also likes the way the teachers at BCSS are so committed to the students.

Skylar has been on the honour roll since 2007 and has been involved with sports, drama and extracurricular activ-ities, including student council. She won the Margaret Harpur Citizenship Award in 2009 and is also an active community volunteer.

This summer she will live at home with her mother in Kelowna while she works and saves money for school in the fall. She has been offered a position as the activities program director at a sum-mer bible camp she has gone to since she was 10 years old.

French students visitStudents from College des Hauts Sommets in

Quebec are visiting the Boundary this week. � e y went skiing on Saturday at Big White.

On Sunday the host families did various activities from horseback riding, visiting a kangaroo farm and quadding.

On Monday the group took part in “a day in the life” at BCSS, taking in classes and cheering on the girls soccer team as they beat Mt. Sentinel 1-0.

Other activities planned for the group include a tour of Greenwood including the museum, courthouse and a “photo hunt”; a tour of the Son

Ranch logging and mill operation; golf in Kettle Valley; a visit to the Nk’Mip Cultural Centre; par-ticipation in a BCSS dance/masquerade; a tour of the Midway Museum and a hike up Midway Mountain.

“Overall, this has been a fantastic linguistic and cultural experience,” French and special edu-cation teacher Nick Bond told the Times. “I’m very proud of the way the BCSS students have absorbed so many experiences with con� dence and class. If possible, I would not hesitate to do this again.”

Returning the favour – after playing host to French 11/12 students from BCSS last month a group of Quebec youth are visiting the Boundary on a student exchange trip. The enjoyed a round of golf and diner at KV Golf Club on Tuesday.

But in 1910, with Greenwood’s population ex-ceeding 2,000, the federal government decided that they needed their own building to accom-modate the increasing postal and customs activi-ties in the city. � ey chose the site of the Pioneer Hotel, on the southwest corner of Greenwood Street and Government Avenue, for their build-ing.

J.W. Nelson had opened his Pioneer Hotel on New Year’s Eve, 1895—the � rst hotel in Green-wood. Fi� een years later in August 1910, he was pleased to accept the government’s o� er to purchase the lots on which his hotel sat. Nelson immediately closed his doors and began to dis-mantle the old Pioneer.

It took nearly � ve years to complete construc-tion of the new post o� ce and customs building. � e call for tenders didn’t go out until December 1912 and construction was delayed for various reasons.

� e beginning of hostilities in Europe during the summer of 1914 created major shortages of skilled workers and some construction materials. But � nally on May 28, 1915, Greenwood’s elegant new post o� ce and customs building was opened to the public.

To help celebrate this 100th anniversary, post o� ce sta� are asking residents to have a look in their photo albums and maybe in old junk draw-ers for any old items that feature this remarkable post o� ce.

Jean, at the post o� ce, is collecting these items and copies of them will be on display during the month of May. All materials will be promptly re-turned to the owners.

Jean will also be pleased to hear about any suggestions regarding the planned celebrations.

Forests: Managed? Exploited?“As Boundary residents you/we can

a� ect the future of the Boundary area,” argues Local RPF Fred Marshall. “We can work to have most of the Boundary area’s timber resources processed (with more value added) in the Boundary area.”

While some timber exports from the Boundary are logical (e.g. there are no suitable facilities in the Boundary to handle power poles, peelers for plywood or large sawlogs) many are not. Rather

they are based almost solely on econom-ic gain for a select few.

In this � ve part series Marshall sug-gests that BC Timber Sales annual al-lowable cut in the Boundary be reallo-cated to “a judicious mix primarily made up of a Greater Boundary Area Commu-nity Forest which could also inherently comprise woodlots and perhaps an en-hanced Woodland Licence for the Os-oyoos Indian Band.”

He argues that this would greatly

complement the current West Boundary Community Forest and make it consid-erably more viable as a pro� table busi-ness venture. It would also develop an enhanced Boundary Community spirit, promote a semi-formal partnership and enhanced relationship among the Os-oyoos Indian Band, the communities and rural areas of the Boundary. Such a relationship would, in turn, bene� t ev-eryone in and adjacent to the Boundary TSA.

Introduction: � e Timber Supply Review is a periodic review of the tim-ber resources available for harvesting in the TSA.

� is is followed by the Chief Forest-er’s or the Deputy Chief Forester’s AAC Determination that sets the amount of timber that may be cut each year in the TSA for the next 10 years. In line with this, the review occurs every 10 years; however it may occur more o� en if deemed necessary i.e. in the event of an inordinate increase in forest health loss-es due to � re, beetle kill, wind or snow damage etc..

� e conduct of the review is a legal requirement for all TSAs throughout B.C.

It pertains only to Crown lands lo-cated outside of Tree Farm Licences, Woodlot Licences, Woodland Licences and Community forests as these tenures have their own AACs. � e Boundary

area AAC allocation for relevant tim-ber tenures, as per the Deputy Chief Forester’s report of May 22, 2014—the “Boundary TSA Rational for Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) Determination”

is outlined. More current and more comprehen-

sive information shows that the volumes available for harvest over the next � ve years in the Boundary TSA, as per Table 2, are signi� cantly higher than that in-dicated by the Deputy Chief Forester i.e. 1,031,041M3 instead of 700,00M3.Background re the Boundary AAC From 1982 to 1993, the AAC for

the Boundary TSA was 700,000M3. In response to mountain pine beetle infes-tations between 1993 and 1995, the AAC was temporar-ily increased to 900,00M3. In March, 1996, the AAC was de-creased to 700,000M3.

It is interesting to note that if any Woodlot or TFL licensee overcuts their AAC, they are, in most cases, legally bound to make it up (to cut less timber)

in the next 5 year cut-control period. � e Deputy Chief For-ester has made no attempt to balance the Boundary TSA overcut with future under-cuts. Rather these undercuts will be or have been allocated to licensees to harvest over the next � ve years.Historical and Ongoing Re-source “Takings” From the Boundary Area:

Historically and currently there is a signi� cant exodus of both water and timber and hence the related jobs from the Boundary area.

Several examples which il-lustrate the “exodus of Bound-ary Resources” are included below:

Timber related removals: Transfer of Boundary timber to the

Okanagan: Approximately 40 years ago the entire Northwestern portion of the Boundary TSA (then the Kettle PSYU—

Public Sustained Yield Unit) was arbi-trarily and capriciously removed from the Boundary TSA and transferred to the Okanagan. � is was an administra-tive decision made in Victoria to raise the AAC in the Okanagan to ‘better”? serve the Okanagan-based mills---now Weyerhaeuser, Tolko and Gormans etc. Little to no regard was made to or for the Boundary-based mills or their fu-ture.

� e Okanagan is still in a de� cit tim-ber position.

� e Grand Forks Interfor operations exports signi� cant volumes of timber to the Okanagan (mainly Tolko) instead of processing it here.

Vaagen Fibre also trades logs and o� -sets out� ows somewhat by importing timber from Weyerhaeuser, Gormans, Okanagan BCTS sales, other mills and even occasionally from the U.S. It would seem more sensible, both physically and

economically, especially for the Bound-ary area, if the local mills sold and/or traded timber between themselves, at least for those logs that travelled past each other’s mills. Both Vaagen and Interfor haul raw logs past each other’s mill, a practice that is environmentally, economically and logically unsound.

� is is very costly to both companies and certainly results in signi� cant losses to the Boundary both in jobs and prof-its.

Just recently, some log-trading has occurred between Interfor and Vaagen that has been bene� cial to both. Hope-fully this initial agreement will be ex-panded to include more such trades well into the future.

Published every two years as the go-to guide for all non-salmon sport fish-ing regulations in effect in freshwater in British Columbia, the synopsis is a valu-able resource for anglers throughout the province.

“The Freshwater Fishing Regula-tions Synopsis provides the public with a summary of the regulations and man-agement practices the Province uses to

Ranch Horse division’s last couple of rides were a ton of fun.

There was fast galloping and muddy goat trails up steep mountain sides with thick trees on either side. Ranch Horse leader Doug Fossen likes to challenge his riders and push them out of their comfort zone to help them become better riders.

Boundary C, the largest club in the dis-trict, hosted district speak-offs which took place on Saturday, April 11 at the Midway Community Hall.

All the prepared speeches were before snack break, and after they continued with the seniors’ impromptus. Their subject was

the Kettle River. The winners this year for seniors are

Marijka van Kuik in first place, Adele Fos-sen in second and Sarah MacDonald in third. For juniors, Jade Fossen took first, Ol-ivia Schneider in second and Matthias Ber-gendahl in third. The top two seniors will be going to the regionals on Saturday, May 9 in Kelowna.

A big thank you to our judges Jeanne Campbell, Louise Bayles and Ron Palmer and to Key Leader Norma Howes for orga-nizing the event.

The next meeting will be held on April 16 where they will be making the final plans for the Cattle Baron’s Ball on April 25. They will also take time to practice judging in prepa-ration for Rally Day in early May.
