CHRISTYAN BAUCH of Schoharie,New York Province
• was born ca 1673-5 in the Palitinate- came with others in the party of the Rev. Joshua Kocherthal in the ship " Medford" -in 1710. - & settled in the West Camp- along the Hudson-
• his name appears in the List of Volunteers- in the Expedition sent by Queen Anne in 1711 agalns Canada,-he being listed with the Haysbury group.
• he removed with others to the Schoharie Valley by 1713/ settling near the present site of Mlddleburg- then called Weiserdorf- where, in 1717- in the Book of Names -he is listed as having five children. The fifth,-Johan Wilhelm Bauch, was one of four infants, who arrived during the first week of the settlement in Schoharie. Later records of children -born to a Christian Bauch, -may well refer to his son. Christian Bauch, JR. -but the use of the name Anna Dorothea- as given to a daughter, by Johannes Bauch, he baptized in 1720- leads us to place him as a son of "Ould Christyan" -as one authority calls the pioneer.
•his wife, Anna Dorothea - was bom ca 1679- since her age, at death, In 1747- is given -as aged 68.
The list of children- included in the Simmendinger Book of Names as being five in number- (but not identified) should permit us to construct as such - a framework- to cover the following: - (based on analysis of later records-)
1. Christian Bauch Jr.
2. Frederick Bauch -
3. a -?- Wilhelm
4. Anna Margretha bapt. Aug.10/1710 at West Camps , N.Y,
5. Johan Wilhelm bapt. in Jan. 1713 Schoharie-
6. Johannes Bauch bapt. 7 April 1720-
7. Anna Maria Bauch bapt. 16 Sept. 1722
We place the next two -in dates- as
children of # I. CHRISTIAN BAUCH JR.
Christian Bauch bapt. 9 Feb. 1723 m. 1743

CHRISTYAN BAUCH- of Schoharie in the Mohawk Valley New York
-name is so spelled in the Baptismal records of West Camp-near the Hudson, where the Palatines settled from the first Camp on the eastern side of the river- and also found In the records of the Lutheran and Reformed Dutch Churches in Schoharie; later in Canada, and In New York, descendants use the spelling: BOUCK.
The earliest record appears In the Rev. Joshua Kocherthal's valuable book,- found many years later in Gettysburg Pa.,--in which he had recorded all the Baptisms on board the ships which brought the Palatines and in the West Camp;- viz
ANNA MARGARETHA, child of CHRISTYAN BAUCH and ANNA DOROTHEA; baptized August 21st 1710. Sponsors: Lorentz Henrich
Maria Margretha Kurtz.
(For records of other Baptisms in same book -see further in the back of this volume- )
A Census of Men able to bear arms,-taken at West Camp 1711; again in 1714- a list of "ftlunteers from the Palatine for the Expedition against Canada in 1711- and other valuable collections are to be found in MacWethy's "BOOK of NAMES".

FREDERICK BOUCK- of Schoharie County N.Y. Province.
Letters Patent- March 19, 1754-
-granted in the reign of George II,- signed by Governor Clinton and James de Lancey-
-to John Frederick Bauch,- ( now called Bouck-) Christ. Zehe-Johannes Zehe Michael Wanner ( Waner) Johannes Knlsker ( Kneiskern)
-for a certain Track of Land lately purchased by them of situate
the Native Indian proprietors thereof,Nlying and being in the
county of Albany to the westward of Schoharry and on the south
side of a creek or brook called by the Indians, Ots-ga-ra-gee
and by the Inhabitants, COBELSKILL- containing about 4800 acres
and further bounded and described as by the Indian purchase
thereof, bearing date the ninth day of November last, might
appear
The old parchment copy of this record is to be seen in
the Old FORT MUSEUM In Schoharrie; it is further described
in the History of Schoharrie County by Jephtha Simms -his
history was printed in 1845. As early however as 1837, Simms
had interviewed many of the surviving inhabitants of Schoharrie
and learned much of the firsthand Information which is entered
in his excellent book. This was less than 60 years after the
Revolution,- when there were some still living who had lived in
the distressing conditions of that time, -others repeated tales
told them from older members of the families.
Indenture : Nov 30 - 1753 - refers to the founding of Cobelskill.

History of Schoharie Co - (Southport LibrJ
by Jephtha R. Simons - publ,1845 Albany ^
by Munsall & Turner,printers
When Queen Anne sent over the German Palatines to Albany Co-
they were located at first near the Hudson on rocky ground and of
their own accord, sent out messengers to find more fertile ground
on which they could make subsistence. They came to the Valley
of the Mohawk and followed this to the West - into what is now
Schoharie and Fulton Counties, Among the earliest to settle
here - near Middleburg and Fultonham - were 6-
Conrad Weiser
Hartman Winteker
Johannes Hendrick Kneiskern
Ellas Garlock
Johannes George Smidt
William Fox-
These were Joined later on by Johannes Lawyer; Ellas Garloch left
the others and settled two miles lower down - near Jacob Vrooman's
place - on what is called Garlochdorf (dorf a small village).
Here were also Dieta- Mann - Sternbergh - Sidney - Bergh, Houck,
Snders - Kneiskern and Strubach families.
Christyan Bouck seems to have come from West Gamps after
the birth of his daughter Margareth - whose baptism was recorded there
Aug. 10- 1710.
In the two most southern villages were these families:
Bouck Schoolcraft Brown
Keyser Krysler Settle
Rickard Casselman Merckley
Rightmyer f/eukirk
Borst Earhart
These were among the earliest settlers in Schoharie section -
which In 1711had from five to seven hundred souls. Most of these
had come from the West Camps group of Palatinates - where their names
may be found in the register of the minister who came to New York
Colony with his flock on two separate voyages - and listed these
in marriage and baptismal records - in a manner which evokes the
1 gratitude of all genealogical searchers. I refer to the Rev.
Joshua Kocherthal who came with the first group of Palatines
in 1708 - returned 1709 - and came with the second group in 1700
of ten families - 41 people. He died in 1719 ^ ' °
His Journal or Register - was found in ^ y o ^ M - P a .
To preserve continuity - in these Bouck records we will not digress
further than to say that some of these may be found in the end
of this volume with charts of Allied Families.
Noted among the above settlers - tradition records that four
children were barn in Schoharie settlements the first week:
Catherine Mattice Wilhelmus Bouck _ .
Elizabeth Lawyer Johannes Earhart
For fifty years these settlers lived in peace and comparative isolation - clearing their farms from the woodlands- planting orchards, taking their grain to Albany gristmills - then establishing their own mills. Their prosperity drew others from nearby and foreign shores but this section may be said to have preserved its own identity - their children inter-marrying among the above groups - and the grand children being kin. to all the others -with names duplicated to an amazing degree.
By the time of the Revolution names (which may originally have been
French in origin before their forbears had had to flee from France
into the German Palatinate or Alsace- and had come from thence
via England to the N.Y. Colony) had by this time become twisted
by various spellings in church or land records so as to be almost
unrecognizable-neverthe less by the fortunate preservation of
Bibles, chiefly, (for these were devout Lutherans who loved their
Bibles) many family records have been preserved.
That a sense of gratitude and loyalty to the British crown should
have persisted to a second and third generation - is not strange -
especially when one considers the great influence exerted in this
section by Sir W<JJLJ-*^~- Johnson up to the time of his death in
1773 (see Annals of Tryon Co. etc) Christyan Bouck - the original
settler - was not the only one whose family was divided then - who
lost sight of each other and their families remain ignorant to this
day - of any kinship. Feeling ran too high for many years after
the Revolution for reconciliations. Communication ceased - This l 0
compiler owes a debt of gratitude to the office of the Archives
of Canada - in Ottawa (M. Gustave Lanctot) for the first clue to
the name of John Ault's wife:- Margaret Bouck - the daughter of
Frederick Bouck - and the name whereof we have this volume -(as
an excursus)from the Ault records - at John's generation.
Frederick Bouck - was one of those who remained loyal to Britain.
The nature of his services is not at present known - but compiler
judges that they were recognized in the grant of land awarded to
John Ault and Margaret - his wife, in reply to her petition from
Williamsburgh Ontario in 1804. This grant of land may be the
same original deed owned by John Livingston Ault of Jehasstawn'$ W*u<-<_-
N.Y. - dated 1808 which confirms acres -[being the farm at
Mille Roches, ?J
The formal registry of deeds in this new outlying wilderness
was not at first observed very closely - compiler found but one
very early mention of such in Albany - where they called the
territory "the land of the Mohax".
In 1752 - a deed was confirmed - which was evidently sought in
1736 — (see page 95 - Simm's History of Schoharie Co.
1752:
Whereas Johannes Becker Jr. and Johannes Shafer Jr. and
Hendriok Shafer Jr. and Jacobus Shafer Jr. having prayed that
they may purchase 6000 acres of land Gov. G. Clinton
agrees — ) - and in December 1^52 — 15,000 acres were conveyed
to them in (a place called ) New Dorlach - which is now in the
part called Seward - which was in Albany County - later part of
Otsego Co. and when that was divided - became part of Schoharie
County -

tstt THE OLD
STONE FORT A T SCHOHARIE, N. Y.
<nOuiLT in 1772 as a Church, it guarded Scho-J-J harians from the British and Indians in
the Revolution. There were over 16,000 visitors to this priceless museum with its treasures during 1938. It is sponsored by the Schoharie County Historical Society and is supported by voluntary contributions.
Open daily 9:00 A. M. to 5:00 P. M. Eastern Standard time from April 1 to November 30.
A D M I S S I O N F R E E
Oldest Building in Schoharie County—1743.
Murphy, Dave Elerson, Nick Sloughter, Bart Vrooman, Captain Reightmyer and others, including Miss Angelica, daughter of the commandant, Colonel Peter Vrooman, who moulded bullets for the defenders.
After the attack at Middleburg and during the afternoon of that day, the destructives marched the five miles to Schoharie, killed two defenseless persons, burned most of the dwellings standing at that time, deployed at the point where Schoharie Depot, once an Indian encampment, now stands and separated, the Indians on one side and the Hessians and tories on the other side of the Lower Fort, bent on surrounding it, and, if possible, destroying it.
It was at this Fort where Judge Brown, Schoharie's first historian and his wife had been living on and off for two or three years and it was through them that the news of the proposed attack had been broadcast and the inhabitants warned to seek refuge in the fortresses throughout the valley. Although Johnson and Brandt were determined to destroy the Fort, Major Joseph Becker and his garrison were alert and ready to repulse them, for behind those hallowed walls were men and women of strength and valor and a corps of skilled marksmen (John Kniskern, Jacob Becker, John Ingold, Sr., Jacob Van Dyck, Nicholas
Warner and others) trained by that intrepid Indian fighter and veteran sharp-shooter of Morgan's Rifle Corps, Timothy Murphy and his compatriot in arms, David Elerson.
Surrounded as it was and open to attack, its inmates stood united in its defense for behind those walls were housed all that were dear to them, their babies, their aged, the defenseless, their valuables and, as most of them thought, that priceless gift— Liberty.
Well did they know the guide, Seth's Henry, the Schoharie Indian Chieftain and his hated war-club or head-maul, and so cordially did they hate him that they killed him after the war.
Major Becker sent the riflemen to the tower. Elizabeth Snyder, wife of Captain Jacob Snyder and other women of their neighborhood, got hold of their pitchforks. The two cannon in the north and south blockhouses were manned; the militia inside stood ready to defend the stockade. About two-hundred strong, they waited for Johnson to do his worst. Shots were exchanged and the sharpshooters kept them moving, then Johnson put a cannon ball through the Fort near the roof, evidence of which may be seen today on the west side of the Fort.
Mrs. Snyder, for whom a D. A. R. chapter in New
Scene from our Thursday Night Movies.

ONTARIO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC RECORDS
AND ARCHIVES TORONTO Augus t 2E, 1946.
Mrs. Helene B. Ault, Glendale, Ohio.
Dear Mrs. Ault:
Your letter of August 17, addressed to the Registrar
of Provincial wills was received at this office. In the
absence of Miss H. Mc Clung, the Provincial Archivist, it
is being answered by a member of the staff.
In the Archives are a number of wills but none,
unfortunately, in the name of Mattice. Yesterday 1 went
to Osgoode Hall Surrogate Court to search the records and
found but two Mattice entries.
1. William Mattlce of Woodhouse died Novfl,1860. Norfolk.
2. William D. Mattlce of Cornwall died June 18, 1861.
I could find no mention of Adam, Peter or Nicholas Mattice.
The Surrogate Court records at Osgoode Hall start in 1858,
However, there are a few hand written wills prior to that.
I examined these and could find nothing.
Do not hesitate to write if this office can be of any
further assistance to you in your search.
Truly yours,
.ebUofffr Office of the Provincial Archivist

Mrs. Helene B. Ault, Box 396, Glendale, Ohio, USA,
Dear Mrs. Ault:
In reply to your letter of the 13th of March, I am sorry to say that we have no additional information about Dr. Ault. I have looked in the list of graduates and find that the following people who graduated in 1894-5-6 are still alive and active, and I think one of them might be able to give you some sort of a lead in your enquiry.
/ Dr. J. F. Argue, Dr. A. T. Bazin, 116 Wepean Street, 4064 Dorchester Street, Ottawa, Canada. Westmount, Quebec.
Dr. D. P. Anderson, Dr. W, G. M. Byers, / 4398 Western Avenue, Knowlton, Quebec.
We s tmount, Queb ec.
Dr. Argue, in particular, was for many years active in the Dominion Medical Board and might have some useful suggestions.
Yours truly,
Virginia Cameron Assis tant Regis t rar
