50 years of CLAAS in Metz – expertise in baler design.

Even in its infancy, CLAAS recognised the importance of the French market for its baling machinery. In 1959, the foundations were laid for the present-day CLAAS France baler factory in Woippy. Over time, CLAAS consolidated its entire baler production activities at the plant. The pool of expertise and many years' experience in baler design soon led to a successful expansion of the range of balers on offer.

Today, there are four names that stand for innovation, performance and efficiency:MARKANT, ROLLANT, VARIANT and QUADRANT.

Since the start of production over 50 years ago, over 290,000 balers have been manufactured. Following the introduction of the legendary QUADRANT 1200, more than 10,000 large square balers alone have rolled off the production line.

The last two years have been focused on process optimisation, with the introduction of a mixed assembly system that enables maximum flexibility.

Technological perfection.

The VARIANT range of variable chamber balers demonstrate a perfect interplay of crop intake and compaction mechanisms for extremely high work rates.

A huge appetite.

The wide-reaching 2.10 m pick-up (1.9 metre clearing width to DIN standards) is unique to CLAAS round balers. The VARIANT pick-up is identical in design to that of the QUADRANT large square baler family. The purpose of the additional width is to facilitate the clean and effective harvesting of extremely wide swaths and to greatly ease the process of transforming smaller swaths into well-shaped and rounded bales. A high-speed helical feed rotor positioned behind the pick-up ensures that the crop feed to the bale chamber remains consistent, even where the swath is clumpy, dry, short and fluffy.

The VARIANT is exceptionally fast in dry material such as hay and straw. The working height can be modified at will via the integrated chain to facilitate effective negotiation of uneven ground. The lifting cylinder remains unpressurised, which enables the pick-up to swing unhindered and adjust effectively to ground conditions.

Unique to CLAAS: the rotor sets the bale in motion.

The CLAAS rotor feeds the crop into the baling chamber where the bale is forced to start rotating immediately.

The VARIANT maximises core compaction to produce extremely high bale weights from the start.

Rotor

Smooth crop flow.

The standard feed rotor delivers a uniform crop flow to the bale chamber. This in turn accelerates the bale formation process, which means higher speeds and faster work rates.

Reliable operation from the outset.

The VARIANT is designed to force feed the baler by means of the rotor. The bale start is positive and minimises the risk of the bale stalling in the chamber.

This system offers you advantages every single minute you are out in the field:• High working speed.• The highly compacted core area paves the way to very

high bale weights.• Guaranteed baling start.

The belts turn at 2.7 m /sec, underlining the performance potential of the VARIANT balers.

Jammed - no problem! Thanks to the pressure release mechanism you can clear blockages easily from the cab using the CLAAS Medium Terminal (CMT). At the push of a button you release the pressure on the entire system and the rotor is opened up. When the system is switched back on, the full power of the PTO shaft acts on the congested material and forces the blocakge out of the way.

8

Higher bale density.

VARIANT balers come equipped with a hydraulic bale density control system that produces highly compressed bales, no matter what the conditions. For instance, the required density can be achieved even with dry crops and high throughput. The CLAAS design uses a combination of three hydraulic cylinders, a spring pack and a dual tensioning arm. This ensures that the one piece belts are guided accurately and tensioned correctly.

Hard or soft centre?

The soft core device can be set individually because different crops require different core density. Dry straw is baled with a rock hard core. With moister hay or straw, the high baling pressure of the VARIANT is reduced intentionally so that the bales can be broken up more easily in the stables.

A full range of bale sizes.

The VARIANT range is designed to enable crops to be baled across a wide range of diameters: 0.9 m to 1.55 m on the VARIANT 350, 0.9 m to 1.8 m on the VARIANT 370. In dry conditions the bale diameter can be increased progressively so the fields can be cleared quicker by making the bales bigger and less net wrap will be needed.

Quick set up.

The bale diameter and size of the soft core are set conveniently on this scale.

Increased bale pressure.

The dual tensioning arms on VARIANT balers ensure highest possible baling densities. No other system can compact the bales as thoroughly.

Different bale sizes – same throughput.

Working comfortably.Using the optional CLAAS Medium Terminal (CMT), you can fine tune baling pressure and match the soft core pressure to suit the individual crop without having to leave the tractor cab.

Seamless rotation.

The one piece belts can stand up to lots of punishment and can produce all types of bale size with various densities. These rugged CLAAS belts contribute to very high performance in heavy duty operation with lowest possible cost per bale.

Five rugged, wide profile belts.

This design spans the surface of the bale as fully as possible, reducing losses in brittle harvests. The broad contact surface also enhances smooth running characteristics.

Built-in reliability all the way.

Baling beltsClean belts.Strippers are fitted to the guide rollers with a large folding tailgate stripper to maintain reliable operation.

All round dependability.

Even the standard model comes with an impressive specification aimed at the professional user. The rotating belts are powered by a convex rubber-coated roller.

The belts are gently profiled for maximum traction with no slippage. The crop is transported reliably and dry, brittle material is handled gently to avoid losses.

Large-diameter guide rollers.

The belts on the VARIANT travel over extra large rollers. The roller in the tailgate is identical to the one on the ROLLANT, and underscores the reliability of the VARIANT.

12

Smooth all around.

The rugged direct drive between the rotor and pick-up via a large pinion, a large 1-inch rotor chain and a shaft cut power loss to a minimum and translate into extended service life. When the tailgate is opened, a clutch turns off the rotor drive so the bales are dropped off neatly. Protected by a shearbolt or a friction clutch in the drive shaft, this drive train is trouble free and enduring.

The standard automatic chain lubrication keeps the chains well oiled during long working days. The double sided brush supplies the chain with twice as much oil, as it brushes both sides each time the tailgate is opened.

The drive gear, drive chains and drive roller for the belts and guards are designed to withstand the toughest operations and the highest loads. All components stand out for their reliability and long service life – no matter how much you demand from your VARIANT every day in the field.

Drive

It runs like clockwork.

The strong chain tensioner spring spreads the load evenly so that the chain life can be extended as far as technically feasible.

Unbeatable wrapping speed.

Round balers have to come to a stop when wrapping the bale. The time stopped should therefore be as short as possible. The high belt speed of 2.7 m /sec means rapid wrapping of the bales and allows you to get back baling again in a flash.

Efficient.

A total of 10 twine reels can be carried along in the machine. Enough for a long working day.

Impressive versatility and speed.

Using CLAAS ORIGINAL ROLLATEX PRO net ensures top-quality wrapping with maximum operational reliability and optimum edge coverage.

Automatic tying

Everything in full view.

The driver needs to be able to keep an eye on what‘s happening on the baler. CLAAS balers all feature good visibility from the front into the wrapping or tying area. Three rolls of net can be carried on the machine, enough for a long working day.

Automatic tying.

When the required bale size has been reached, the wrapping process is automatically activated. The net is specially fed in from above, allowing wrapping to begin regardless of the volume of crop, a feature much appreciated when leftover bales are being wrapped at the end of a field.

Dependable twine tying.

Tying with the twin-thread twine also starts fully automatically and ensures firm and secure bales. Simple set up and adjustment are key features on the VARIANT and they pay off every day in the field.

The panels open up wide to provide good access for convenient cleaning and maintenance work.

The CLAAS Standard Terminal.

During the hectic forage harvesting period, every minute can be vital. So it‘s great if you have reliable technology to assist you. Using the rapid-select keys on the CLAAS Standard Terminal (CST) you can control the basic functions from the comfort of the driver‘s seat.

Just choose the method that suits you - net or twine - and set the automatic start according to your requirements. You can also activate a manual tying process, for example in short swaths. A mechanical bale counter on the baler informs you of the output achieved at all times. Four LEDs alert you to any problems with the wrapping or binding process. This means you always have your VARIANT fully under your control.

The new ISOBUS module means you are in full control of your baler.

But there's more: the CLAAS Medium Terminal.

Frequent changes of driver and variations in field conditions are routine during harvesting periods. With the CLAAS Medium Terminal (CMT), you can program the baler according to the prevailing harvesting conditions.

On the one hand you can set the main control functions, as on the CST. On the other hand you have control over every detail of what's going on behind the tractor during tying and wrapping. The baling pressure on the soft core can be easily seen by the driver. Thanks to the pressure-release mechanism you can clear any blockages easily from the cab. What's more, the terminal informs you of precisely how many bales and working hours you have completed.

Flexible reactions, comfortable operation.

The optionally available left/right display for the CMT supports the even filling of the baling chamber for well-balanced bales, even in irregular or narrow swaths.
