AQ& with Mr. Mike SlamannInformatIon compIled by blake leeson & brIttany emond

Q: How did you get started helping the Booster Club?

A: I was in my back yard cutting the grass and my neighbor Keith Coursin came over and started talking about the Booster Club. I was having my children starting at the high school in the next few years and he was looking for someone to replace him in the club. Always wanting to be involved in extra activities, I said sure.

Q: Describe your role with Booster Club?

A: My role in the Booster Club is team and general merchandise coordinator. I am responsible for the team clothing for all 26 sports if they choose to go through the Booster Club. I actively participate in fund raising activities that are going on, volunteer to help run concessions to sell food and volunteer to help sell clothing and sell memberships at the fall registra-tion. I vote on certain topics that come up for discussion in regular monthly meetings. On occasion I would present the Highlander award to athletes of sports.

Page 7: Boostermagazinefall2013

6 Q: How long have you been involved with the Booster Club?

A: I have been a member of the Homestead Booster club since 2000 starting out as a member at large and then taking over as team and general merchandise coordinator.

Q: What are some of the projects you have been involved with for the Booster Club?

A: 50/50 raffles, pancake breakfast, all fall high school registrations, 8th grade to freshman orientation, Request for pur-chase (RFP) selecting preferred vendor for clothing, sat on a committee for the negotiation of NY2LA pricing.

Q: What is your favorite part about being involved with the Booster Club?

A: Being involved with the high school and helping make decisions for the betterment of the sports

Q: What are your hopes and expectations for the future of the Booster Club?

A: The expectations for the future of the Booster Club would be to continue to provide equipment, supplies and special requests that will enhance the quality of the sports. This is done through the sales of merchandise and concessions and the sales of memberships. With over 700 athletes, it is vital that parents of athletes purchase these memberships to help support the Booster Club, which allows the club to provide the needed equipment for the sports that the district cannot provide. Q: Within the Booster Club, what are you most proud of?

A: I am most proud of the dedication, commitment and teamwork that the members provide. We are all willing to roll up our sleeves and dig in to help out the students, sports and the high school.

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

A: We are always looking for people to join the Booster Club. The commitment is minimal and the rewards are great. We have a great group of dedicated individuals and the doors are always open. We meet the second Monday of every month at the high school at 6:30 p.m. Please consider joining the Booster Club and help make a difference in the best high school in the area: HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL.

Dear Parents of Senior Athletes:

The Homestead Booster club produces a fall, winter and spring sports booklet, designed and published by the Highlander Publications class. These professionally bound, magazine-quality color booklets will feature team photos, schedules and ads. One type of ad is a Senior Tribute Ad where parents can recognize, congratulate or encourage their child in his or her final season as a high school athlete.

The half-page or quarter-page Senior Ads will include a professional sports photo (or one high resolution photo of your choice) with a personal message and will run for the season the sport is in (fall, winter, or spring). If you choose to submit a photo of your choice it should be no larger than 3x5 inches.

If you would like to purchase a Senior Ad, please contact Rachel Rauch at [email protected] or Jen-nifer Zoeller at [email protected] . The cost is $75 for ½ page ads and $50 for ¼ page ads in cash or check to Homestead Booster Club. Digital photos can be emailed to [email protected] - be sure to specify Senior Athlete Ad and the athlete’s name (we will also need the check and form turned in sepa-rately).

Thank you for your support of Homestead Booster Club and best wishes for your athlete’s continued suc-cess after graduation!

Class of 2014Flyer created by Katie Bandurski

Highlander Publications has taught me valuable skills such as responisbility and leadership that I will be able to use for the rest of my life. The class has also helped me nd what I want to study in

college.

Attending a national journal-ism convention in San Fran-cisco made the things we do in class feel like something much bigger. I felt like I was part of a family, and that my life is going in the right direc-tion. This trip was so bene-cial that I can honestly say that it was the best experi-

ence of my life.

I have learned more real-life skills in Highlander Publica-tions than I have in all of my other high school classes combined. I have grown as a writer, designer and leader, and I cannot wait to pursue a

Journalism career.

Students will learn basic com-munication skills, such as how to write good quesitons and conduct professional interviews, how to write journalistic articles, how to use technology to create page layouts and lm broad-casts and how to take quality photographs. Intro is a one trimester class oered to all grade levels.

New for the 2013-2014 school year, seniors who have previ-ously taken one or more trimesters of Advanced Publi-cations have the option to “dual-enroll” in Honors Mass Media and Communication for one trimester to receive college credit from the Univer-stity of Oshkosh.

Open to all students who have previously taken Intro, the Advanced class publishes the Highlander newspaper, the Tartan Yearbook, the Booster sports magazine, the Senior magazine and a variety of other projects. Advanced can be repeated each school year for one, two or three trimesters.

Scan the code or visit goo.gl/Jv1hk to view a video about Highlander

Publications.
