DENNIS LEONARDvP health & safetyKiewit MiningAs safety director, Dennis Leonard is responsible for Kiewit Mining Group’s overall safety program and performance. Over the past 10 years, Kiewit has performed more than 50 mining contracts totaling

more than $1.3 billion in revenue. Dennis began his career with Kiewit in 1995. During his time at the company, he has served as a safety engineer, safety manager, and district safety manager, before moving into his current Kiewit safety leadership role in 2012. Dennis has authored various safety articles for the International Board of Environmental Health and Safety and the Associated General Contractors of Arizona. His works have included “The Value of Safety,” Stretching in the Workplace” and “Managing an OSHA Inspection – Before, During and After.” As a Board Accredited Registered Safety Professional, Dennis is a twofold recipient of the “Safety Professional of the Year Award” presented by the Associated General Contractors. He has provided guidance and training to many safety professionals by serving on the Board of Governors with the International Board of Environmental Health and Safety. He is based out of Omaha, NE.

gONzALO RIOS B. SC., MBA, Epvice President of health and safetyAura MineralsMr. Rios is an executive level Corporate Social Responsibility professional with approximately 20 years of experience in the mining industry. His tenure in the sector has included both direct experience

working at Latin American operations as well as the executive management of environmental, health and safety, and social performance aspects of Latin based operations. His spectrum of CSR and sustainability experience includes stakeholder engagement, community development, social investment, health & safety management, managing and monitoring of environmental impacts, as well as associated corporate reporting in these areas. At present, Mr. Rios is the Vice President of Corporate Responsibility for Toronto-headquartered Aura Minerals. Over the past four years he has been responsible for all aspects of social and environmental performance, but more specifically, the oversight of the Health and Safety programs of their four operations and one pre-development project in Brazil, Honduras, and Mexico. He has previously worked with Pan American Silver as the Director of Environmental Affairs, AMEC International Chile as the Manager of Projects including Health, Safety & Environment for South America, an independent Safety and Environmental Consultant, and was the Safety and Environmental Superintendent for Compañía Minera Cerro Bayo Ltda in Chile. Mr. Rios is an environmental engineer, and has an MBA from the University of Chile.

MICHAEL MEIgHENGlobal Operations (HSES) Risk ManagementArcelorMittalMichael Meighen is a senior Global Mining Executive with experience leading teams in in North America (United States, Canada and Mexico), South America (Columbia, Brazil); Africa (Liberia); Eastern Europe

(Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russia); and Europe (United Kingdom, Belgium). Michael’s most recent position was Director of HSES (Health, Safety, Environmental and Security) Americas for ArcelorMittal, the world’s leading integrated steel and mining company. He was also Global Risk Manager for the mining

segment, where he held responsibility for 42 mining operations and more than 35,000 employees across operations, financial, safety, engineering, HR, purchasing, marketing, and transportation. Prior to ArcelorMittal, Michael served as Senior Consultant for Hawcroft Consulting International, where he conducted business risk analysis and offered executive consulting services to identify, assess, and resolve overarching issues for broad-based global mining operations. Michael has served as Principal Investigator for the U.S. National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and on the Safety Committee of the National Mining Association, as well as state and international associations. With a Master of Science in Management, a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering, and as a Registered Member of SME, Michael offers executive consulting services for mining (operations, health and safety), construction, transportation (port and rail), and heavy industry, and also holds extensive experience coordinating lobbying efforts for major companies around the world.

ERIC THOMpSONHSE ManagerHorizon North Eric Thompson is an executive level Health, Safety and Environmental Manager (HSE) with 28 years HSE experience. He has worked in the forestry, oil well drilling, construction and remote catering industries

for the past 35 years. His passion for safety has taken him to various locations throughout Indonesia, Australia, Finland, USA and Canada. Eric is currently responsible for the safety management systems for Horizon North. He engages 1900 employees and clients that occupy up to 9500 beds. Additional responsibilities include harmonizing HSE within other entities within Horizon North; which encompasses camp manufacturing, matting, installs and transportation.

RICHARD MORLANDFormer President & cooBHp-Ekati Diamond MineRichard Morland has been a member of the resource industry for 33 years. A graduate of the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia), he has spent 22 years in operational leadership positions in resource

companies in Australia and Canada. He specializes in business transformation, based on a simple conviction that the elimination of serious injuries and fatalities from the workplace is the ultimate expression of deep care by leaders for employees, and is the enabler of breakthrough business performance. Richard is the former Vice President of Operations, President & Chief Operating Officer of the Ekati Diamond Mine (2006-2010). He also served on the Board of Avalon Rare Metals (2012-2014), and now does executive consultancy work focused on a transformational initiative called the Safety Guarantee. Richard has lived in Yellowknife, Canada since January 2006. He is married with three adult children and is a dual Australian-Canadian citizen.

DIRK CLAESSENSGeneral Manager Global Industrial ProductsIBMDirk Claessens is the General Manager for Industrial Products globally. He joined IBM as a Consulting Partner when PwC consulting was acquired in 2002. As a consulting partner he has been involved in delivering

assignments in Supply Chain Management, Technologies and Application Strategies and Implementations in the industrial Sector. This includes international assignments for two years in Australia/New Zealand, and one year in Taiwan after which he returned to Europe. Joining IBM he was asked to lead the Metals and Mining Industry Globally (for Business Services) and as such he has worked in Chemicals and Petroleum and Metals and Mining companies and spoken on various occasions on conferences around the world. He was asked to run the Industrial Sector for Growth Markets and relocated to Shanghai in 2009. He was appointed General Manager Metals and Mining and was relocated to Brazil to run the practice from there. Back in Europe since 2014. He holds a degree in Commercial Engineering and an MBA.

MATTHEW D. MOOREglobal health & safetyHarsco MineralsMatt is a Graduate of the University of Cincinnati and has spent over 25 years in EHS. He has served in both the public and private sector during his career and has led EHS efforts in various manufacturing settings.

He is currently the Director of EHS for Harsco, a multifaceted manufacturer and industrial service provider. Matt previously worked for companies such as Avery Dennison, U.S. Steel and before joining Harsco worked for Gerdau for 13 years and served as their Corporate Director of Health and Safety.

FRED STAWITzPrincipal, technical trainingKinder Morgan Inc.Fred Stawitz, a national award-winning educator and writer, is the author of the exciting new book “Don’t Run Naked Through The Office” which explores employee engagement from the employee’s point-of-view. He is

currently Principal, Technical Training and Regional OQ Program Coordinator, for Kinder Morgan, Inc. He has developed effective training programs for the American space shuttle program as well as Shell’s natural gas pipeline and headed up the development of online technical training for America’s largest pipeline company. He has chaired national HR and safety conferences inspiring stimulating discussions on the impact of the workplace environment on productivity and safe operations. He has been the featured guest on several television news/talk shows including CNN Headline News - Local Edition in Southern California and a PBS local affiliate special in Pennsylvania, and was quoted in a special U.S. Congressional Quarterly Report.

vIC pAKALNIS President and cEo MIRARCO – Mining InnovationVic Pakalnis has a rich and diverse background in applying public sector policy as well as training and organizational design, based on over 32 years of experience in the public administration, at a senior

executive level within the Ontario Public Service. In 1972, he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering and in 1976, obtained a

Master’s Degree in Engineering, both from McGill University. In 1994, Vic garnered his wall with yet another Master’s Degree, this time in Business Administration from Queen’s University. In 2007, he was appointed the 2007-2008 Ontario Public Service Amethyst Fellow in Public Policy at Queen’s University School of Policy Studies, where he taught courses in the MPA, MIR and Mining Engineering Programs on policy implementation, project management, and occupational health and safety. Vic was also appointed as Kinross Professor in Mining and Sustainability in 2009 at the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining at Queen’s University. He has a lead role in the Queen’s Aboriginal Access to Engineering Program. His research interests are in applied sustainability, seabed mining, engineering and public policy. Before his entry in the Government of Ontario in 1978, Vic worked in various mines in the province: Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Kerr Addison Mines, Inco Mines Ltd. as well as the Iron Core Company of Canada. Vic then led a career in provincial government at the Ontario Ministry of Labour. During his aforementioned 32-year career, he worked as Provincial Director of Mining, Director of Industrial Health & Safety, Regional Director of Eastern Ontario (which included corporate and program responsibilities for Health and Safety Programs and Employment Standards) and Operations Director for Human Resources (which required him to recruit and train over two hundred new inspectors). Amongst all his success, Vic was also one of the founding members and past Chair of the Eastern Ontario Regional Directors’ Council and the Provincial Interministerial Council and in 2010, was elected as president of the 88,000-member Ontario Public Service Quarter Century Club. Furthermore, he chaired the tri-partite Provincial inquiry into Health and Safety in the Pulp and Paper industry and co-led the Early Wins Team within the Internal Administration Restructuring Project in 1995, a project that was charged with reducing the cost of administration within the Ontario Public Service by $300,000,000. After his widespread career in government, Vic’s diligence was praised when he was awarded Ontario’s prestigious Amethyst Award for Excellence in Public Service. Due to his great influence in the Canadian Mining Safety community, Vic has appeared on radio and television networks such as CNN, BNN, CBC and CTV as a commentator on health and safety issues, in particular the Chilean Mine Rescue Operation in 2010. He is the author of a number of a number of papers on varying subjects such as: mine safety, public policy, training and organizational design. Lastly, Vic is a proud member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, the Society of Mining Engineers, the Canadian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy and the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. He serves on the Board of the Radiation Safety Institute of Canada as well as the Board of Minerva Canada, which promotes the introduction of occupational health and safety in schools.
