Welcome to the 20012/13 Book of Bangalow. This publication is managed and produced by the Bangalow Chamber of Commerce. It is one of many initiatives the Bangalow Chamber under-takes to help promote business in the 2479 area, foster growth and promote Bangalow and our surrounds.

We are indebted to the financial chamber members and advertisers since it is their contribution that helps make the book a reality year after year.

This year we have expanded the content to not only provide a directory of all businesses and services in the 2479 area, but also provide the many visitors and potential visitors information on where to shop, play and stay and what to taste. The Bangalow Chamber looks forward to the coming 18 months as we work hard on behalf of the 2479 businesses and community groups to building and stronger, more vibrant, cleaner and safer environment for residents and visitors to the area.

OUR HERITAGE

Bangalow Heritage WalkBangalow Heritage Walk is a self-guided tour of Bangalow’s historic buildings. The majority line both sides of Byron Street from the Anglican church on the corner of Ashton Street to the monument in the park near the roundabout at the top of the town.

The Station Street section features the Masonic Hall as well as the A&I Hall at the entrance to the Showgrounds that have – since 1904 – hosted the annual November Bangalow Show.

The Catholic church in Deacon Street, and Readings building on Lismore Road, are also of historic significance and are within 100ms of the town centre.

Many of the original commercial buildings were constructed of timber and were unfortunately destroyed by fire. The devastation caused by these fires in 1907, 1911, 1930 and 1939 finally prompted the insurance companies of the day to compel that all new commercial premises be constructed of brick.

Byron Street, once a section of the old Pacific Highway, underwent modernisation from the mid-20th century until 1994. At this time, the building of a highway bypass prompted a series of public meetings resulting in a committee being formed to plan, enhance and preserve the heritage qualities of Bangalow. Work included the restoration of the shop verandahs with their iconic posts.

The Walk takes you past a number of Federation houses and, for those who are interested in exploring further afield, The Walk can be extended to include the original housing subdivisions along George, Granuaille, Campbell and Keith Streets. Another option is a stroll down Lismore Road and up Robinson, Thomas and Charlotte Streets to discover what lies behind the Catholic church.

Not to be missed is the precinct including the Bangalow Creek Pool and our Heritage House Museum and Tea Room on the corner of Ashton and Deacon Streets. The Museum houses an extensive photographic display on the history of the town, to be enjoyed while sitting down to lunch or having morning or afternoon tea in restful surroundings. A Short History of BangalowBefore European settlement of this area of northern New South Wales, in the mid–19th century, the rich red soil on which Bangalow village, and much of the surrounding region, was to be settled was covered in dense sub-tropical rainforest known as the ‘Big Scrub’. From the 1840s this rainforest was pioneered by cedar getters and foresters who blazed rough tracks through the bush seeking logs of red cedar for constructing houses or shipping abroad for furniture making. By 1900, once ninety-nine per cent of the Big Scrub had been cleared,

the cedar getters had moved on. The land was settled by dairy farmers and the town of Bangalow became the centre of one of the country’s richest dairying areas.

By that time a bustling thriving village had emerged with all the conveniences of a big town: two hotels, a School of Arts, five churches, blacksmiths and livery stables, general stores, motor garages and carriage builders, a hide exporter, tailors, haberdasheries, an engineering factory, a substantial timber mill that received and dispatched its products by railway, bookkeepers,

a local newspaper, fruiterer, photographic and building suppliers, a pharmacist, a post office, two primary schools, several banks and an undertaker.

From cedar getters to dairy farmers to macadamia and specialist food growers, and from old farming families to newly arrived tree changers, Bangalow has always been a town with an eye to adaptability. These days traditional owners share the powerful ‘magic’ of connection to land with the remaining old pioneering families and a changing parade of newcomers. It’s a combination that ensures a strong sense of community and survival.

We are spoilt for choice with the Farmer’s Market operating twice weekly - on Thursday morning from 8am in Byron Bay and Saturday morning from 8am in Bangalow in the carpark behind the pub as well as in Mullumbimby at the Mullum Showground every Friday 7am-11am; and at our local monthly markets, held in Bangalow in the showgrounds on the fourth Sunday of each month as well as in shops in Byron Sytreet in Bangalow’s main street, like Pantry 29; Charlotte’s in the Reading Building and Foodworks.

But as many of us also know, we can also shop locally, very locally in fact, right at the farm gate.

Farm gate produce is often offered on an honesty basis. Simply take what you want and pop your money in the box. And the produce choices are of course all seasonal and as fresh as it comes.

There are some very popular farm gate precincts but farm gate produce stalls are all over the 2479 region and you never know what produce you might come across in the rural hinterland.

Here are some popular options, including Broken Head Road, (from the highway past the Newrybar school), which has in the past had the moniker ‘fruit salad alley’ and ‘long shop road’; Piccadilly Hill Road (which runs off Broken Head Road) and the favourite citrus stall at the top of Granuaille Road on the way back out to the highway).

Here we have provided a brief guide, which is by no means exhaustive, of fresh produce available direct from the farm gate, but which will give you an idea of where you can go to check out some local and seasonal fresh produce.

But remember, honesty is the best policy; the farmers will only continue to provide farm gate produce as long as the honesty policy is respected.

For fresh produce, the following properties feature road side stalls:

To help introduce and promote the many offerings of our beautiful town, Bangalow’s community web site has been relaunched (www.bangalow.biz).

Designed and built by 11atoms, the new website communicates the diverse features and unique style of Bangalow and is useful for both locals and visitors. It is a comprehensive directory of shops, services, events and a voice for residents and business owners in the community.

It features a full listing of all the businesses and service providers in the 2479 area, along with maps depicting local venues and tourist spots of interest, and articles and items of interest from local contributors.

Bangalow.biz (the new website) was welcomed by Bangalow Chamber of Commerce members with excitement and enthusiasm for the opportunities the site brings to the 2479 area.
