We live in a time of permanent and rapid change. Technology has grown exponentially throughout the last decades, while the growth of the world population and of the global economy followed this transformation. Nevertheless, these technological advances have reached only 2 of the 7 billion inhabitants of our planet. If we are dazzled by the present, the future will be even more striking: The true revolution is yet to come.

Whether infinite growth is possible in a finite planet is an increasingly controversial question. Even though technology appears to be an inexhaustible force that can solve our problems, it is uncertain whether it will play a key role in achieving Sustainable Growth.

The Dilemma of Infinite Growth in a Finite Planet

The world´s economy is now five times bigger GDP-wise than it was half a century ago, and the world population is also in exponential growth. This causes the following question to become increasingly more important: Is there a possibility for perpetual growth in terms of population and economy in a planet that has limited resources and size? In 1972, the release of the book Limits to Growth was the seed to a line of thought which claims that the finite availability of resources and the limitations of the environment to absorb human emissions represent physical barriers to growth. Are we then on the verge of the end of an era of continued growth? If such is the case, is there a possibility for prosperity to exist without growth? In relation to resources, some analysts claim that food and water safety are in crisis. Will these crisis become the `weak link´ of our civilization? As far as the impact of our development on the environment is concerned, global warming is a phenomenon which has been attributed by scientific communities, with a degree of certainty over 90%, to high concentrations of greenhouse gas emissions. In the last ten years, the amount of such emissions increased faster than in any previous decade. Alternative energy sources, especially solar energy, are gaining ground and could become a solution to this problem. But will they be able to overcome the 4-trillion-dollar oil industry? Is capitalism an obstacle for sustainability?

RETHINKING THE RULES OF THE GAME

Sustainable development is defined as a mode of human development which satisfies the needs of present generations without jeopardizing future ones. The aforementioned seems to suggest that global development would not be sustainable in this context. In that scenario, would we be facing a technological, political or economic problem? Would the core solution be a profound change in the rules of the game, with an approach towards long-term? Which would be the role of individuals, companies, international bodies, NGOs and governments in this change of mentality? Would green entrepreneurs and collaborative actions in an interconnected society be a key answer to this question? As a counterpart to those who claim that there are limits to growth, there are tech-optimists, who are convinced that technological advances will make sustainable growth viable. Several inventions, such as vertical farms, in-vitro meat, geoengineering and water desalination devices support this stance. Technology has revolutionized our society and economy and it will keep doing so in even more striking ways. But can we rely on its advance in order to overcome such a big challenge or do we really need to reconsider our behavior as individuals and as a society?

SUSTAINABLE GROWTH

The State and Technology are closely related, and therefore clear, precise and effective rules need to be set in order for our civilization to adapt to permanent change successfully.

In addition, Entrepreneurship has lately been growing in importance. It has established itself not only as the star among alternative business models, but also as a whole new lifestyle.

Our reality has changed. Our goal is to Rethink the Rules of the Game in a forward-looking manner, in order to review tomorrow’s agenda.

When Technology Outplays the System

On June 28, 2012 the first automatic firearm created by a 3D printer was unveiled. On April 24 of that same year, the company Planetary Resources disclosed its space mining plan. Technology is growing rapidly, while the states of the world seem to take too long to regulate it. How can we solve this problem? Who should take care of it?

The State is a political concept which refers to both a social and economic organization which has authority over its population and territory. Such authority is enforced via regulations, which impose penalties if an infringement were to occur. Technological advances are constantly defying such regulations and policies, for they provide society with tools that allow new ways of interaction within itself and with the environment.

After the emergence of the internet in 1993, a new phenomenon that aimed to capitalize on the failures of software and hardware security aspects began to rise: online piracy. This has generated global problems, which force the states of different countries to jointly combat this activity. How would tech-regulations work across countries who do not share the same policies? This question becomes increasingly problematic due to the growth of computer science. We should be asking ourselves: How does that affect our economy? How can governments protect the intellectual property of their people?

Economies’ New War Horse

“All human beings are entrepreneurs”, Muhammad Yunus stated. However, about 40 years ago few people would have agreed with this Nobel Laureate. Why is it that currently more than half of USA’s private non-farm GDP is created by small businesses? What has happened in numerous countries that caused entrepreneurship to flourish in the past decades?

Entrepreneurship is nowadays one of the main drivers of economic growth. Many governments and NGOs around the world are currently developing initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and startups. Some countries, like Israel, have even become “entrepreneurial hubs”. We could ask ourselves, why Israel among all nations? Could it be due to its unique entrepreneurial ecosystem? If other countries achieved such progress, could the world economic order be altered?

Traditional startups can cause economic growth. Yet, social entrepreneurs make even greater contributions. This type of businesses have a positive effect on the economy and by accomplishing an effective balance between profits and purpose, they are able to be seeds of change. Is this equilibrium the key to the success of a new generation of entrepreneurs?

The technological advances in communication generate new means of pressure on governments around the world. An example of this is the Cablegate Incident at WikiLeaks, which exposed the breach of laws and regulations of many figures of power around the world. The advances in the media promote the freedom of expression, allowing news to reach a wider public audience without fearing censorship. This brings forth a need for transparency in governments, for the degree of their exposure has greatly increased. But, will governments become more transparent or more paranoid in the presence of data leaks? Is it possible to make use of technological advances in communication for compromising a man´s freedom of speech?

It is evident that technology has been able to challenge governments all around the world. They are in the growing need for a quick and effective legislative response in order to adapt to this issue. Should the government be in charge of regulating and promoting technology? Which would be the consequences of their inaction towards tomorrow´s changes? It is time to review these concepts and formulate the right questions in order to find answers to these problems before their consequences become unmanageable.

Technology and globalization are playing a very important role in the rise of entrepreneurship. As Peter Diamandis says, technology is creating abundance, not as a synonym of luxury but as one of possibility. Technological advances will undoubtedly create infinite opportunities for entrepreneurial exploitation. However, will entrepreneurs need new capacities in order to thrive in this context?

Education provides useful tools to entrepreneurs. However, to what extent is Undergraduate or Graduate School indispensable for those who want to become entrepreneurs? Is experience a better professor?According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, half of startups fail within the first four years. Is failure part of the entrepreneurial experience and formation? Or does it mean that not everybody can be an entrepreneur, in opposition to what Yunus suggests?

We are now facing exponential times. Technological innovations and globalization have created a revolution that changed the rules of the game and boosted entrepreneurial opportunities in a unique way. But the true revolution is yet to come. The upcoming age of abundance will not only bring about a great number of opportunities, but also entail many challenges. Are our entrepreneurs ready for this? What will happen in the future?

Humanity is challenging the rules of the game and redefining its nature. Change is not constant; in fact, change is accelerating. Some technologies are radically transforming humanity and also transforming human beings. Many experts now talk about the four sciences and technologies of the future: NBIC (Nano-Bio-Info-Cogno). Furthermore,

the NBIC fields are rapidly converging at an accelerating rate and they will help to transcend many human limitations in order to improve human lives all around the world and beyond our tiny planet.

Growth, Progress: both words need to be precisely defined. Growth is a purely quantitative notion, usually measured by GNI, Gross National Income. GNI is a controversial criteria while it does not include the informal economy, domestic work, ecology, social justice, valuable customs, etc.. However, accuracy of an index is less decisive than its scientific independence and continuity in order to assess the efficiency of policies.

Progress is qualitative, more difficult to measure. If we define Progress as the sustainable increase in “freedom of choice”, Economic Growth does lead to Progress. Ultimately it belongs to democratic institutions, to define what Progress and Growth are and act accordingly. What should be criticized, from a scientific perspective, is any political contradiction between aims and means.

Can we meet the needs of 10 billion people in a world of limited resources? Yes, if we can transform our global commercial system into one that mimics an ecological system. In nature there is no pollution (all waste is food); there is no energy crisis (nature runs on abundant solar energy); and there are no systems, financial or otherwise, too big

to fail. This talk will focus on the sustainability challenge and the mixture of policy frameworks and business responses that will be required to support growth of a healthy economy at the expense of an unsustainable one.

What is it about Entrepreneurship that makes people so enthusiastic? Entrepreneurship is the World’s greatest growth engine, a superpower. Between 2009 and 2011 small US firms (20-499 employees) accounted for 67 percent of the net new jobs, and generated more innovation that their larger counterparts.

Entrepreneurship is changing not only the business world, but it is also significantly impacting government, academia and society. In her talk Ayla Matalon will discuss the interplay between entrepreneurship and innovation, the business, legal and technological environment and the social climate which enhance entrepreneurship, as well as the traits of the successful entrepreneur.

Ayla joined the MIT Enterprise Forum with 15 years of experience in high-tech and venture capital. The MIT Forum is a global non-profit (started @MIT) dedicated to promoting the success of high-tech ventures, providing education and consulting. Previously an analyst at “Steps Investments” and Managing Director at “US-Israel Science and Technology Center”, supplemented with her experience in software engineering, Ayla acquired a deep knowledge of high-tech entrepreneurship. Ayla is an adjunct Lecturer (high-tech entrepreneurship) at the Technion, Herzliya Interdisciplinary and Tel-Aviv University. She is a cum laude alumnus of the Technion (BA 1980, MSc 1987), and an INSEAD alumnus (MBA 1993).

AYLA MATALONEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MIT ENTERPRISE FORUM (ISRAEL)

Over the past two decades, networked technology has fundamentally changed the way we do just about everything. Consumers take for granted that they can access anything at any time from anywhere with the click of a button, which has disrupted industries as diverse as finance and education. The one industry that has not yet been fundamentally affected by these changes, however, is government. This disconnect between our current technology landscape and the governments that

represent us is dangerous. Code for America’s mission is to bridge this gap, bringing 21st century technology into cities and by doing so fixing the relationship between citizens and government. In this talk, Catherine Bracy will discuss the values and principles that animate Code for America’s vision and our plans for building a global network of civic change agents.

CATHERINE BRACY INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM MANAGER, CODE FOR ALL

Catherine Bracy runs Code for All, Code for America’s international program. Until November 2012, she was a product manager and director of the Obama campaign’s technology office in San Francisco. She also did outreach to the tech community for Tech4Obama. Prior to joining the campaign, she ran the Knight Foundation’s 2011 News Challenge and before that was the administrative director at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

LET’S PLAY TO RETHINK “THE GAME”

We live in a society with motives but no motivation, we have concerns but we stay still. We are used to being “passive citizens”. Nonetheless, as they say: Actions say more than words. This is why I believe that the key to be able to rethink the rules of the game is firstly to rethink about the “player’s” education. Imagine being able to give the tools not only to 2 or 3 Steve Jobs that in each generation knew how to take advantage of the opportunities, but “awake” hundreds, why not thousands of “geniuses” that will discover their own talents.

FELICITAS DE ZAVALÍA - UNIVERSIDAD DEL NORTE SANTO TOMÁS DE AQUINO - ARGENTINAMODERATOR: JOSÉ LUIS ROCES

Some students have been selected to present the different subtopics based on their essays . After the presentation, this session will let all the participants share their ideas and discuss them. They will become the main characters of the debate, and the interaction between different cultures will create very enriching and diverse opinions.

CHANGING THE RULES OF THE GAME

Albert Einstein once said, “I never think of the future - it comes soon enough.” And surely enough, it is here. The future is every day. It is not a notion, it is not an ideology and it is not a time frame. It is a reality.Mankind’s greatest challenge now is having to whet the appetite of the monster it has created in the form of growth and development while ethically and morally sustaining the implications and effects it has on our modern day societies.

If we are to be the ones to bring about a positive change not only for ourselves but also for our future generations, a change in the gaming rules is most timely in order.

FOR AN ECONSCIOUS SOCIETY

The proposal combines recycling and entrepreneurship in one project. It seeks to generate an organization in charge of collecting plastic in places that are key for that specific waste, like restaurants, bars and/or clubs. Classifying the waste in its place of origin, in a decentralized manner, implies a great advantage in the recycling chain. The organization we are talking about falls under the definition of Social Enterprise, which in my opinion is the best way of Rethinking the Rules of the Game.

OUTSIDE THE WALL: PINK FLOYD AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In the modern world opportunities are outlined by a wall similar to the one described by Pink Floyd in “The Wall”. Though this view is already vox populi, what is really captivating is how the concept of entrepreneurship differs on each side: outside the wall originality is a quality, but inside it is a necessary feature to survive. Furthermore, entrepreneurship is not “Another Brick in the Wall”, it is a hole that connects both sides. It is of utter importance to redefine the attention we pay to ideas from inside the wall in order to change our world.

A RECIPE FOR SUSTAINABLE CAPITALISM

Presently, we as humans are operating in an infinite matter while living on a finite planet. Our global mentality of business competes directly with the Earth’s capability to produce life. This session will provide insight into the notion of a sustainable capitalism- a framework that seeks to maximize long-term profit through reforming markets to address the triple bottom line. The session will discuss some of the complex issues regarding present-day commerce and the recipe required for a paradigm shift in the way we conduct business.

A NEW WAY TO THINK ABOUT ECONOMIC GROWTH: STOP ATTRACTING

BUSINESS, START ATTRACTING ENTREPRENEURS

The current global economic crisis has shown how the growth model of many south european countries is not sustainable in the long term. This is the main challenge for the developing countries: taking the right way for a long-term growth in a wise and forward-looking view, avoiding the european mistakes. Taking this into account, it is necessary to think about the attractiveness of foreign investments in a new way: it is time to stop thinking about attracting companies to produce and start attracting entrepreneurs to innovate.

In 2003 and 2004, some ITBA students had the opportunity to attend various conferences in Europe and the United States. These are mainly business conferences, organized by students of houses of study of excellence at international level, which have been organized for thirty years, and summon students from around the world. These events gather the current leaders with the future leaders under a common theme, generating dialogue between them on a neutral platform that enables the sharing of experiences and seeking of concrete actions for sustainable development.

Noting that there weren’t any events of similar size in South America, in August 2004, four Argentine students founded the South American Business Forum (SABF), the first business forum organized by students for the region. The proposal from Yvonne Meninato, Emiliano Castaño, Agustín Di Luciano and Juan Trouilh was a prestige annual business forum under the framework of the Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires (ITBA). They formed a team of fourteen organizers to finally allow students from around the world to meet in Buenos Aires with prestigious leaders seeking to contribute to sustainable development in the region.

The first edition was held in august 2005 under the title “The Challenges of the New Leaders: Values, Technology, Innovation”. To this day, about 500 students from over 50 countries have participated in various editions.

PREVIOUS EDITIONS

We wanted to take this space to thank the Delegates and Jury who collaborated extensively with the organizing team to make this new SABF edition possible.

Since the beginning we counted with the support of ex participants to make the Delegates’ team who helped to promote the SABF and its values to different parts of the world and Argentina. They are an incredible group of people determined to share their experiences with other students and motivate them to get involved in the SABF. This year, thanks to our joint work to promote the SABF more students put themselves forward to share their ideas and projects with us.

The ones who had the tough task of evaluating the texts presented by the students were the juries. Thanks to their collaboration we count with an excellent panel of professionals to guide us through the process of selection. We hope that even though it is a task that requires a lot of dedication you were able to enjoy the process of evaluation.

Thanks again for your support along this new edition and for honouring the commitment you took with us since the beginning.
