Dear Friends of Christamore,
Welcome to the 39th Annual Book & Author Benefit Luncheon. The Christamore House Guild is honored to celebrate 111 years of service to the Haughville community and continue this remarkable tradition of raising money for scholarships and strengthening the educational programs at the Christamore House.
The proceeds raised by the Book & Author Benefit fund our Frances Carter Coburn Scholarship Fund as well as assist the early childhood education and afterschool programs at the Christamore House. Over the years, the Book & Author Benefit Luncheon has raised over $2.5 million. These proceeds have benefited nearly 1000 scholarship recipients and enhanced the programs for the youth at the Christamore House.
The Frances Carter Coburn Scholarship is named after a past president of the Guild and dedi-cated volunteer at the Christamore House. For the past 39 years, it has been the mission of the Guild to honor Mrs. Coburn’s legacy by awarding scholarships to students pursuing undergradu-ate degrees and vocational training. Without the assistance of our scholarship program, the students would have a difficult, if not impossible, time pursuing higher education.
The Guild is proud of the impact that the Christamore House has on our city. Since 1905, the Christamore House, through education, partnerships and volunteerism, has empowered the people of the Haughville area to be self-sufficient and contributing members to a safe and healthy community. The Christamore House Guild supports the Christamore House by funding the community of programs available through the House, raising money to provide funding for the programs, supplying volunteers to assist these programs, and much, much more.
We would like to thank our Author's Circle Sponsors, The Tobias Foundation and Glick Philanthropies. We also extend our sincere gratitude to Lindy Thackston and Reid Duffy for taking part in our event. Finally, a huge thank you to our authors for their literary contributions and enthusiastic participation in this benefit.
On behalf of Joelle Baugher and Lisa Hoskin and the entire Book & Author Committee, I would like to thank each and every one of you for attending this year’s benefit luncheon. Your presence today helps us assist the youth of Indianapolis’ Haughville neighborhood achieve their dreams through the power of education. We appreciate your support and hope you enjoy reading these wonderful books and learning more about our acclaimed authors.
Sincerely,
Mary HinkebeinPresident, Christamore House Guild 2018-192 3

KATE QUINNThe Huntress William MorrowIn the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted . . . Nina always dreamed of flying. When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, she risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment. When her plane goes down, Nina crosses paths with a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, and only bravery and cunning will keep Nina alive.
Ian, a British war correspondent abandons journalism to become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a predator known as the Huntress. To find her, he joins forces with Nina, the only witness to escape the Huntress alive. But a secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it. Growing up in post-war Boston, Jordan is determined to become a photographer. When her widowed father unexpectedly comes home with a new fiancée, Jordan is thrilled. But there is something disconcerting about the German widow. Jordan begins to delve into her new stepmother’s past — only to discover that there are secrets that may threaten all Jordan holds dear.

TRACEY GARVIS GRAVESThe Girl He Used to Know St. Martin’s PressAnnika is an English major at the University of Illinois. Anxious in social situations where she finds most people's behavior confusing, she'd rather be surrounded by her books or the quiet solitude of playing chess. Jonathan joined the chess club and lost his first game — and his heart — to the shy and awkward, yet brilliant and beautiful Annika. He admires
her ability to be true to herself and accepts the challenges involved in pursuing a relationship with her. What follows is a tumultuous yet tender love affair that withstands everything except the unforeseen tragedy that shatters their connection, leaving them to navigate their lives alone. A decade later, fate reunites Annika and Jonathan in Chicago. She's living the life she’s always wanted. He's a Wall Street whiz, recovering from a divorce. The strong feelings they once shared are instantly rekindled, but until they confront the fears and anxieties that drove them apart, their second chance will end before it truly begins. "An incredible story with a unique premise and characters you'll want to root for." — Colleen Hoover, New York Times bestselling author

D ISTINGUISHED GUEST AUTHORS
ANNIE WARDBeautiful Bad Park RowAn explosive and twisted psychological thriller — a perfect love story leads to the perfect crime.
Things that make me scared: When Charlie cries. Hospitals and lakes. When Ian drinks vodka in the basement. ISIS. When Ian gets angry . . . That something is really, really, wrong with me.
Maddie and Ian's romance began at a party overseas; he was serving in the British army and she was a travel writer visiting her best friend, Jo. Now years later, married with a beautiful son, Charlie, they are living the perfect life. But when a camping accident leaves Maddie badly scarred, she begins attending therapy, where she gradually reveals her fears about Ian's PTSD; her concerns for the safety of their young son; and the couple's tumultuous past with Jo. From the Balkans to England, Iraq to Manhattan, and finally to an ordinary home in Kansas, sixteen years of love and fear, adventure and suspicion culminate in The Day of the Killing, when a frantic 911 call summons the police to the scene of a shocking crime where a beautiful marriage turns beautifully bad. "As touching and thought-provoking as it is terrifying, Beautiful Bad will leave readers spellbound." — Mary Kubica, New York Times bestselling author
WHITNEY SCHARER The Age of Light Little, Brown and CompanyA captivating debut about Vogue model Lee Miller, and her passionate affair with artist Man Ray in 1930s Paris.
"I'd rather take a picture than be in one," says Miller after arriving in Paris. Lee leaves behind a successful modeling career to pursue her dream. She catches the eye of the famous Surrealist Man Ray, and though he wants to
use her only as a model, Lee convinces him to teach her photography. Man is an egotistical, charismatic force, and their personal and professional lives become intimately entwined, as the lines between maker and muse blur. Lee's story unfolds in Paris, with nights spent at cabarets, opium dens, and wild parties, and days spent working with Man to discover radical new photography techniques. As Lee begins to find success in her own right, Man’s jealousy spirals, and soon betrayals threaten to destroy them. Told in interweaving timelines of 1930s Paris and war-torn Europe during World War II, this sensuous debut brings Lee Miller — a brilliant and pioneering artist — out of the shadows and into the light. “. . . a startlingly modern love story and a mesmerizing portrait of a woman's self-transformation from muse into artist." — Celeste Ng, New York Times bestselling author

Established in 1908, the mission of the Christamore House Guild is to provide volunteer services and financial support to the Christamore House, a multi-service community center serving the needs of the Haughville neighborhood and Near Westside communities of Indianapolis. The Christamore House provides early childhood education, afterschool programs, senior services, and family support, including employment coaching and a full range of social services.
The services offered by the Christamore House are essential to the residents of the area:
• 21% live in poverty with children • 18% make under $10,000 and 60% make less than $25,000 • 35% do not have a high school diploma • 20% of households are single females with children under 18Source: SAVI Neighborhood Database
To further support the Haughville neighborhood, the Guild established the Frances Carter Coburn Scholarship program nearly 40 years ago to provide need-based scholarships to students from the community seeking higher education. Frances Carter Coburn was a Guild past president whose efforts were recognized in 1970 with an Outstanding Volunteer Award presented by President Richard Nixon. Most of our scholars would have a difficult, if not impossible, time pursuing higher education without the assistance of our scholarship program.
Proceeds from ticket sales, book sales, donations, and corporate spon-sorships fund the Frances Carter Coburn Scholarship program and assist the educational programs at the Christamore House. Since 1981, the Book & Author Benefit has raised over $2.5 million and benefited nearly 1000 scholarship recipients.

ABOUT CHRISTAMORETAYLOR JENKINS REIDDaisy Jones & The Six BallantineA novel about the whirlwind rise of an iconic 1970s rock group and their beautiful lead singer. Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity . . . until now. In L.A. in the late sixties, Daisy sneaks into clubs on the Sunset Strip,
sleeps with rock stars, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend. The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies. “Beautifully layered and complex . . . Daisy and the band captured my heart.” — Reese Witherspoon
MARTHA HALL KELLYLost Roses BallantineA prequel to Lilac Girls, and also based on a true story, features Caroline Ferriday’s mother, Eliza, who fought to save a group of Russian aristocrats who suffered horrors at the hands of the Bolsheviks during World War I and came to America penniless and traumatized.
It’s 1914 and Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanov's, to her home in St. Petersburg to see the splendors of Russia. But when Austria declares war and Russia's Imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya flees to her family’s country estate. In need of domestic help, they hire a local, Varinka, who brings danger into their household. In America, Eliza is helping the Russian families find safety as they escape the revolution. But when Sofya's letters suddenly stop coming she fears the worst for her best friend. From St. Petersburg to Paris and the society of fallen Russian émigrés who live there, the lives of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka will intersect in profound ways, taking readers on a ride through a momentous time in history.
"The writing is rich and vivid with detail about the period. A nuanced tale that speaks to the strength of women." — Kirkus Reviews

The Marge Kroeger Award is named in honor of Marjorie R. Kroeger, a dedicated 63-year member of the Christamore House Guild. She was an inspiration to all with her enthusiasm to serve others. In her memory, we recognize a senior scholar who has shown exceptional volunteerism at the Christamore House during their time as a scholar. This year’s recipient of the Marge Kroeger Award is Darrell Hutchison, Jr.
Darrell Hutchison, Jr. was born and raised in Indianapolis, not far from the Christamore House. Through his love of basketball, he discovered the Christamore House gymnasium and played many pick-up games while growing up. Upon graduation from Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School in 2015, Darrell once again found himself at the Christamore House, this time as a Frances Carter Coburn Scholar. He entered Earlham
College in the fall of 2015 to pursue a degree in global management with a concentration in marketing. Darrell enjoys the diverse campus of Earlham and the broad learning experience it offers. He is the leading scorer for the men’s varsity basketball team, a member of student government, and a convener for Black Men United social club.
Each summer during Darrell’s tenure as a Christamore House Guild scholar, he volunteered at the Christamore House, spending most of his time at the senior center. In fact, it was the ladies at the senior center who taught him how to play dominos! Darrell’s time spent volunteering gave him great insight on the importance of developing a strong community. “Everyone at the Christamore House is so close and genuinely enjoys each other, just like family.” He believes that every individual has a responsibility to help others.
True to his motto, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today”, Darrell plans to utilize his experience in media and PR marketing in the Indianapolis business community while pursuing a MBA in marketing at the IUPUI Kelley School of Business.
The Christamore House Guild is honored to award Darrell with the 2019 Marge Kroeger Award.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHRISTAMORE HOUSECEO, LA' TOYA PITTS…
I would like to start off this letter of thanks and gratitude by introducing myself; my name is La’ Toya Pitts and I am the new Executive Director of Christamore House. I have a long history of involvement with Christamore House and I am humbled and excited about my new role.
Christamore House has a rich history of providing the very best child and youth educational services, senior programming, and life skills training to the residents of Haughville and the Near Westside. It is our vision that through education, partnerships and accountability, we can empower the people of Haughville and the Near Westside to be self-sufficient and contributing members to a safe and healthy community.
Over the last year we have accomplished many great things such as:
• Received a grant from Nina Mason Pulliam Trust Foundation to increase capacity for the House of Teen Program.• Hosted college panel with collegiate athletes from Howard University for the House of Teen students to engage in college readiness.• Served more than 110 campers at our historic summer camp.• Increased the number of individuals and families served in our Family Strengthening Program from 1,147 to 1,534.• Over 100 volunteers donated hours of service to Christamore House programs in 2018.• Youth ages 13-19 attended more than 10 college site visits in 2018.• Served more than 75 youth in our afterschool program.• Partnered with United Way’s READ-UP program to impact more than 25 young readers to meet state standards.• Increased hours of operations as well as capacity in all programs across the center.
As you can see, we have been quite busy working with the community to continuously work towards our mission and goals. The Christamore House has stood strong for more than 113 years and I am accepting the challenge to play a role in the rich legacy by moving our organization “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead” into the next phase of our future.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Staff of Christamore House, the residents of the Haughville and Near Westside community, I thank you for your continued support. We invite you to play a role in moving Christamore House “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead”!
