    aswedo ina crisis

The newspapers are full of accounts of

    howresidentsbanded together toassist

those affected by the floods in the Hel-

derberg last week. The Somerset West

Facebook page was flooded with of-

fers to assist those in need. Calls went

    out to evacuateMediclinic Vergelegen,

    and many responded.

    Early on Saturday morn-

    ing I drove through Bizweni

    and Bridgewater to observe

    the damage, and witnessed

    entire communities coming

    together to help their neigh-

    bours.When I offered help to

    residents most of them com-

    mentedthat theyhadalready

    been helped.

    Together with some Har-

    courts colleagues we filled

    sandbagstoassistsomeprop-

    erty owners living along the

    Lourens River. Friends and

    neighbours were there in

full force to help off-load the

    sandbags and protect the

    properties from further

damage. It was wonderful to see andmany

locals were on an emotional high at being

part of the solution, not the problem.

Its a credit to the Helderberg area that

    residentsareable touniteandassistothers

in times of crisis. It didnt matter whom

you voted for, where you went to school,

    what languageyouspoke, orwhat raceyou

    wereifyouneededhelpthenotherswould

offer it. People focused onwhat reallymat-

tered: people. It made one proud to be a lo-

    cal.

Now that the waters have receded the

challenge residents face is to retain that

sense of community. Instead of airing

grievances about all the problemswe have

to live with, wouldnt it be refreshing to

focus on the positives? There are many in-

dividuals who give selflessly of their time

and energies. What made the relief effort

so specialwas the fact thatmost of the com-

    munity did this it became

    the norm, not the exception.

    We are so privileged to

live in one of the most beau-

tiful spots on the planet. But

    what makes living here so

    special ismore than just the

    surroundings its the peo-

ple. Lets not forget what it

    feels like to experience the

    power of a community that

    comes together for one com-

    mon cause. It shouldnt take

    acrisis tomake thishappen.

So what has this got to do

    withproperty?Wepurchase

    houses, but we live in

    homes.Ahome ismore than

    a house. It encompasses a

way of life. It includes the

benefits of living in a community that

shares our values and respects others.

The world we live in has serious issues

    to contendwith.Wewill not fix themhere.

But we can all do our bit to contribute to

a society that lives by the code: Do unto

others as you wish them to do to you.

We felt thebenefits of this througha time

of crisis last week. We shouldnt have to

wait for the next crisis to experience this

again. Lets all do our bit to better our com-

munity and enhance the lifestyle we enjoy

in this place we call home.

    Exclusive Paarl home for sale

An ultra-modern home with an eye-catching

design and spacious open-plan living areas

has come onto the market in Paarl.

The property is located in LIdeal Close Es-

tate, a sought-after gated community directly

    above thegroundsofPaarlGirlsHighSchool.

Occupying an erf of over 1000 m, it is on the

    market exclusively through Pam Golding

Properties (PGP) and priced at R10 million.

PGPs area manager for Paarl, Surina du

Toit, says LIdeal was established in the late

1990s, with the first homes being built from

    around 2000.

The community includes a total of 22 er-

ven, of which only a handful are still vacant,

    she says.

    Themajorityhavebeen completedwith el-

egant modern homes, most of them enjoying

    magnificentviewsof thevalleyandsurround-

ing Drakenstein mountains. There is a firm

emphasis on secure family living, and the ar-

    ea isparticularlypopularwithfamilieswhose

    Boyshighschools.Being located in thesouth-

ern part of Paarl, it is also conveniently posi-

tioned for access to the N1.

The home currently for sale was designed

    byarchitectChristofAlbertyn,whowasgiven

virtual carte blanche by the owners to create

his artistic masterpiece. The result is a spa-

cious home with striking modern lines, in-

cluding soft curves, natural wood and im-

mense expanses of glass tomaximise the light

and views. The property looks directly onto

the fields of Girls High and residents can en-

ter the school grounds directly through their

    own gate.

PGP agent Adri Holm says the exclusive

home has some 600 m of living space, includ-

    ingsixbedrooms fiveof themoccupyingone

level and a sixth located separately, ideal for

    guest use.

Although this house is a work of art, it is

still a very practical and comfortable space,

with an easy flow between the living areas,

she says. There is also superb flow from the

indoors to the outdoor entertainment areas,

including a pool deck with panoramic views.

The kitchen echoes the curved lines of the

home and has a practical design that places

everything within easy reach of the cook,

without feeling cramped. While the design

may be ahead of its time, this ultimately re-

mains a very warm and liveable family

    home.

    Otherfeaturesincludeanindoorbraaiarea,

    air-conditioning, under-floor heating and full

staff quarters. Garaging is provided for three

vehicles and there is computerised irrigation

    for thegarden.Thehomehasanalarmsystem

    and intercom.

Holm says the property will appeal to the

discerning buyer who wants a unique home

in a prime location, combining top-end style

and luxury with relaxed family living. This

would be an ideal home for a large extended

family, or for those who entertain guests fre-

    quently.

    Volgens die hoofbestuurder van

haar opvolger, die nuwe Diva De-

luxe, is spesifiek gemik op die be-

hoeftes van di hoogs selektiewe en

    intutiewe mark, s hy.

    Perreira verduidelik dat daar ;n

verdere rede is vir die bekendstel-

    ling van dieDivaDeluxe. Die sport-

    nutsvoertuig-segment is een van die

mees aktiewe sektore in die Suid-

    Afrikaanse mark, bestaande uit do-

    syne mededingers. Dit is belangrik

Met die Diva was slegs een

    Die Diva Deluxe is egter

    nie net nmooi gesiggie nie:

in 2012 and 2013, racking up an impressive

500 000 sales worldwide. Evenmore unbeliev-

    ableisthefactthatMercedes-Benzhasalready

taken 30 000 orders of the new S-Class, most

without the customer even seeing the car.

While some may dismiss that as madness,

S-Class customers know exactly what to ex-

pect the best levels of comfort, convenience,

luxury, technology, design and efficiency. On

paper, Mercedes-Benz has built exactly that

into their new sedan; the only questionable

aspect could be the new cars appearance.

    The internally-known W222 range isnt

    quiteasstrikingasitsnewestsiblings; thedar-

    ing trend startedbyA-Classhasgracefullyby-

    passed theS-Classandleft it lookingconserva-

tive and elegant. My personal opinion is that

this gamble will definitely pay off the huge

    Merc looks stately and dignified in the flesh;

    like an S-Class should.

Its interior is also a completely new design

but was infused with excellent ergonomics

and intuitive details. Over 100 electricmotors

assist in running the cabin, you may choose

    frommultiplemassages (including hot stone)

or air fragrances which were specially de-

    signed for this car.

Optional executive (split) rear seats can re-

cline up to 44 degrees and obviously theres

the option of controlling all media settings

from each chair. Sound comes courtesy of a

    Burmeister concert hall-grade system with

front bass, which uses parts of the cars frame

    for low-frequency resonance.

Surround and 3D functions are optional up-

grades on lesser models but all W222s get to

brag with maximum screen size. There are

two (yes, two!) 30,7 cm TFT monitors in the

    newcomers dashboard; one for instrumenta-

tion and trip info, the other for allmultimedia

    and infotainment systems.

    Further options include text-message read-

    outsandwireless internetviaBluetoothcellu-

    lar connectivity. NVH (noise, vibration,

    harshness) advances pair upwithweight sav-

ings of up to 100 kg, 50%more torsional rigidi-

ty and class-leading 0,24 cd aerodynamics for

    even more driving comfort.

    Theresnotasinglefilament(old-fashioned)

light bulb in this car, even the adaptive head-

lights are LED and thus save up to 75% on

    energy consumption. The high-beam assist-

ant will even carve a path in its rays for on-

    comingtraffic, leavingthehighbeamsonelse-

where for you to see well.

    360-degree stereoscopic cameras monitor

everything around the S-Class and can better

detect pedestrians and animals, also in the

dark, even taking evasive action. Coupled to

the latest Distronic autonomous cruise con-

trol, stop & go pilot and steering assistance,

this Mercedes is almost capable of driving it-

    self.

Engineers in Germany fiddled with a few

systems and managed just that an S-Class

drove itself from Mannheim to Pforzheim

    along therouteBerthaBenz tookoveracentu-

ry ago.Over 20 driver assistance systemsnow

make up Intelligent Drive, taking a further

    step towards accident-free driving.

    Another big innovation isMagic BodyCon-

trol, a systemwhich uses the cameras to scan

the road surface ahead and adjust the suspen-

    sionaccordingly.Youread that correctly.The

S-Class can detect potholes, bumps and other

nasties up ahead andwillmake sure that they

    dont bother you too much.

Currently there are four engines available,

    the S350 BlueTEC turbo-Diesel V6

    (R1 214 000), S400 petrol V6 Hybrid

    (R1 227 100), S500 Bi-Turbo petrol V8

    (R1 564 100) and its naughty S63 AMG cousin

(R2 174 000). Most are also available as long

    wheelbasemodelswhile theV12sareexpected

    next year.

It goes without saying that every model

    shows improved efficiency and performance

    whilecomplyingwithEuro6emissionsstand-

ards. The list of standard and optional fea-

tures is just as impressive as the colour and

trim combinations, plus each car is sold with

    Mercedes-Benzs full six-year/100 000 km

    maintenance plan.

I could tell you all sorts of details about our

chauffeur and self-drives at the cars launch

but it would only boil down to one thing: its

phenomenal. The new Range Rover comes

    closebutthatsanSUV,sowhatyourelooking

at now is the best car in the world.

While some may dismiss it as madness, SClass customers know exactly what to expect the best levels of comfort, convenience, luxury,

technology, design and efficiency (at price!).

    SouthAfrica is toobeautiful for localpho-

to-journalist, Scott Ramsay, not to share.

    Thisfreelancephotographerspendsmore

than 300 days a year driving through

South Africas protected areas in a Ford

Everest, to capture the countrysmost re-

    mote and exquisite natural places.

The Everest is designed to be the ultimate

recreational vehicle with the comfort and

safety features required of a family car and

the off-road competencies of a Sport Utility

Vehicle (SUV). Powered by a 3,0 F engine the

Everest boasts plenty of torque to ensurema-

    noeuvrability in any situation.

Nowcurrently in its second leg,Year in the

Wild has seen Ramsay travel 80 000 kms in

his Ford Everest, in the course of which he

has so far covered over 40 national parks and

provincial nature reserves in Southern Afri-

    ca.

Through my Year in the Wild project, I

    am documenting and photographing the

most special national parks and nature re-

    serves, andultimately inspiringotherpeople

to experience these wild places in Africa for

themselves. I also interview rangers, re-

    searchers, communities and fellow travel-

lers, to find out what makes each place

unique and special, and why we should con-

sider these protected areasworthy of conser-

    vation, says Ramsay.

    Endorsed by South African National

Parks, KZN Wildlife and CapeNature, the

project focuses on 45 of South Africas most

    specialnaturereservesandincludesall19na-

tional parks, as well as the trans-frontier

parks on the borders of the country.

So far in the2013-2014Year in theWild jour-

ney, he has journeyed through KwaZulu-Na-

tal, the Eastern Cape and southern Cape

The parks he has visited so far include

    uKhahlamba-Drakensberg, Mkambati, Dwe-

sa, Addo Elephant National Park, Mountain

Zebra National Park, Robberg Nature Re-

    serve and Agulhas National Park

    Because I travel alone,my transportmust

be reliable and sturdy, says Ramsay. I rely

heavily on my Ford Everest 4x4 to get me to

    SouthAfricasmostremoteandbeautifulare-

as which on any given day includes driving

on tar, sand, gravel. rock and mud.

Im no 4x4 expert, but Ive driven to over

40 protected areas in southern Africa in my

Everest. Of course, driving style and skill, as

well as tyres and tyre pressure are critical,

but so too is thevehicle. TheEverest has real-

ly proven itself and has takenme to some un-

    forgettable destinations. Through my jour-

neys I am able to inspire others to travel, so

that they too can be inspired andmaybe even

    transformedby thepreciousplaces our coun-

try as to offer, he concludes.

The 2013/2014 Year in the Wild journey

ends on 28 September 2014 in the Kruger Na-

    tional Park.
