When the terms “modern” and “typeface” come to mind, Bodoni is likely the first font designers think of from the top of their head. Bodoni is a common modern serif typeface best known for its contrasting strokes of thick and thin and its flat serifs. You may have seen Bodoni being used in either a fashion magazine, a movie, or a band logo (see Usage), but the family has been around for far longer than one might think. In the late 1700s,

Giambattista Bodoni, who was an acclaimed printer and designer, was heavily inspired by both Pierre Didot’s type thories and the works of John Baskerville.

While working on a new typeface, he designed it to bedistinguishably unique from others fonts at the time. Bodoni rejected old-style letters and instead wanted to focus more on simplicity; giving it heavily contrasting strokes of thick and thin and some unique letter features such as capital Q’s tail and J’s hook (see Anatomy). The typeface Bodoni is highly regarded as one of the very first modern typefaces to ever be designed. The font would eventually in typography’s later history give influence to the sans-serif movement of the 1900s by adopting Giambattista’s philosophy on simplistic design for readability.

There are two general characteristics modern fonts share: flat serifs and heavily contrasting strokes. Bodoni’s letters are especially striking examples of varying thickness and hairline serifs.Whether they be in small or large font size, Bodoni’s alphabet is not only readable, but alsouniquely stylish. What makes Bodoni stand out from other fonts besides its strokes and serifs is its other features. Anatomy such as Bodoni’s ears and teardrops in letters such as lowercase g and uppercase J respectively give a sense of elegance. Another notable feature is Bodoni’s capital Q for its

distinguishly shortened and slick tail. The “normal” version of Bodoni used in this book is Roman, but the typeface also comes in other variants and not just bold and italic. There are alsoposter and book variants as well that help expand the creative flair of the family. Along with expansion, there are some little differences. The ampersand symbol & for example in its italic versions (minus poster italic), unlike other versions, uses a teardrop instead of a flat serif. At the sibling page are just a few variant examples of Bodoni. Take a careful look at its features to compare and contrast its features and note its modern traits.

Bodoni is a modern typeface made in the late 18th century and a relevant one of the current times. It works with even the most sim-plest uses for logo design. As far as logos go, so little is modified. In its most notorious examples below, they are simple, yet maintain readability and style.

Now imagine those same logos when they’re associated with visual advertisements (see pages 8 and 9). Bodoni is great for designing con-temporary-styled movie posters, fashion maga-zines, album covers, and overall anything that comes off as “trendy.”
