Transcript of Bodily Framework

  • Types of skeletonExoskeleton -A skeleton lying outside the body of some invertebratesEndoskeleton -The internal supporting structure of vertebrates, made up of cartilage or boneHydrostatic skeleton -are supported by liquid in their bodies

  • Human Skeletal SystemSkeleton is the name given to the collection of bones that holds the rest of our body. There are 206 bones that made up the adult skeletal system. There are 350 bones make up a young skeletal system

  • Divisions of human skeletal systemAxial skeleton -made up 80 bones, which are the skull, ribs, breastbone and vertebral column -the most complex part is the skullAppendicular skeleton -made up of 126 bones -these are the limbs-shoulders, arms, hips and legs

  • Types of bonesLong bones -bones found in the legs and arms -hallow yet strong and lightweightFlat bones -protect and support body organsShort bones -supports weights and allow for many small movementsIrregular bones -bones that are irregular in shape

  • Bone structureLigament -bands of special tissues that connects bones to bonesPeriosteum -tough white membrane that covers and protects the bones ; made up of connective tissueCompact bone -a dense connective tissue that provides a great deal of support, contains bone cells, blood vessels and flexible protein baseSpongy bone -a loosely structured network of separated connective tissuesRed bone marrow -produces both red and white blood cellsYellow bone marrow -consist of mostly fat, which stores energy

  • JointsFasten bones together

  • Types of jointsImmovable joints -occur when bones are fused together by a protein called collagenSlightly movable joints -permit bones to have limited movementFreely movable joints -allows the body to have a wide range of motion

  • Types of freely movable jointsBall-and-socket joint -slows all type of movement in all directionsPivot joint -allows the turning of body part from side to side or up and downHinge joint -bending and straightening ( allows movement in one plane only )Gliding joint -sliding motionSaddle joint -rotation, bending and straightening

  • Bone Injuries and DisordersFracture -break in the boneDislocation -happens when a blow to the skeleton causes a bone to be displaced out of its jointAnkle ligament injury -happens when you sprain your ankleOsteoporosis -a condition when there is several loss of bone mass
